Traditional black and green teas are made from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant which is inherently gluten-free. So, given that statement, one would assume all tea is gluten-free. What Did We Sample
All products were sampled between April 2018 and March 2019. Samples were collected from local and regional grocery stores located in 6 major cities across Canada. These cities encompassed 4 geographical areas: Atlantic , Quebec , Ontario and the West . The number of samples collected from these cities was in proportion to the relative population of the respective areas.
The following products were not included in the survey:
- products with all of the following allergens in the list of ingredients â almond, hazelnut, peanut, sesame, soy/soybean, egg, milk/dairy, and wheat, barley, oats, rye, triticale, kamut, spelt, or gluten
- products with a precautionary statement for all priority allergens
- non pre-packaged products
- products past the best before date

How Were Samples Analyzed And Assessed
Samples were analyzed by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited food testing laboratory under contract with the Government of Canada. The samples were tested as sold, meaning that the product was tested as-is and not as prepared according to package instructions.
In Canada, food allergens and gluten must be declared in the list of ingredients if they are present in the prepackaged product in order to comply with the requirements of the Food and Drug Regulations Section B.01.010.1. A prepackaged product will be deemed non-compliant if any level of undeclared allergens and gluten is detected.
Health Canada considers that gluten-free foods, prepared under good manufacturing practices, which contain levels of gluten not exceeding 20 ppm meet the intent of the Food and Drug Regulations Section B.24.018 for a gluten-free claim.
Flavored Teas Have All Kinds Of Additives
You may be getting a nice black tea thats totally 100% gluten-free, but many flavored blends are sweetened. One of the things they may be sweetened with is malted barley, which does contain gluten. Theres not going to be very much of it, but its enough to cause problems for celiac patients.
So if youre buying unflavored straight black tea, green tea, oolong, pu-erh, or white tea, all is well. If youre buying flavored teas, youd better take a closer look at that label.

Thoughts On Which Green Tea Brands Are Gluten
Thanks so much for this list. I absolutely love green tea and have been avoiding buying it and using a black tea instead which I know to be gluten free. Theres something about green tea that just makes me feel so pure when I have it, as if Im being detoxified and I know there are lots of other health benefits such as the antioxidants.
If you have a Teavanna around where you live I highly recommend going there and getting their gluten free tea and also they have some really nice tea pots and sets and these make great gifts for family and friendsand you! Theres something about using a gorgeous Japanese tea set that makes tea so much better!
You know, I just dont like green tea that much. I like it mixed with jasmine, but my favorite is oolong if Im in the mood for something Asian. My favorite is tea is black tea, and Ive heard that it has antioxidants as well and also something in it that helps prevent plaque buildup, interestingly enough!

I am a Tazo girl myself, but Ive been curious about other tea brands because Im often out and about and with other people and I see these other teas and Im not sure if I can have them or not. I usually just bring some tea bags with me, but Ill check out these other brands the next time I have the opportunity.

Think about it this way: When referencing the matcha powder, Starbucks acknowledges that its made of nothing but powder and sugar.
Can I Drink Tetley Green Tea
We have spoken to the manufacturers of Tetley tea bags following concerns about the labelling on some of their green tea bags stating that they may contain gluten.
The manufacturer has told us that there is a risk of contamination with wheat gluten during production. They have labelled these products as a precautionary measure due to a risk of contamination in the tea bag. Any trace of gluten in the tea bag will be diluted in the brewed tea, so the level of gluten in the tea you are drinking will be well within the safe level for people with coeliac disease .
Tetley are investigating the issue and trying to remove the risk of contamination. Once this is done they plan to remove the statement from the packaging, so you may see a mixture of packs on store shelves with and without the warning.

Which Tea Companies Are Gluten Free
As a continuation from last weeks post of what can make tea not gluten free, here are some companies I have contacted to find out if they are 100% gluten free or not. As a disclaimer, I was not sponsored by any of the companies in this blog post.
First, lets start with the companies that cannot make any claims that their tea is safe for someone with celiac disease. As a disclaimer, do your own research into all of the companies listed if you need to in order to feel more comfortable. The information below is the replies I received from the individual companies. I asked if they can 100% guarantee that their tea is gluten free within the ingredients AND the facility they are made in. Every person with celiac or non-celiac gluten sensitivity has different comfort levels when it comes to ordering out or buying processed products.
The tea companies that potentially have gluten Sip at your own risk
This company uses Teavana tea, which used to be a solo store franchise but back in 2017 Starbucks closed all locations. Since then you can still purchase certain select Teavana teas at Starbucks store locations and when you order a tea from the barista it is from Teavana. Starbucks cannot 100% guarantee the tea or tea lattes made in house are 100% gluten free. They also did not mention if their tea bags are sealed with wheat paste. Is Your Tea Gluten
Years ago, when I was first diagnosed with celiac disease, I assumed all tea was gluten-free. It was the one beverage that I drank every day and I didnt even give it a second thought that it may not be gluten-free. Its made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. How could it not be gluten-free? I enjoyed it at coffee shops, and I loved to try different brands and blends of tea throughout my travels. When my celiac lab tests were still not in the normal range after months of adhering to a gluten-free diet, I sat down and thought there must be something that I am ingesting every day that is not overtly affecting my digestive system but contributing to the fact that I could not get my lab test results back within the normal range. Hmmm, could it be the tea I enjoy every morning?
After doing some research, I learned that not all tea is gluten-free.
Recently, I used my Nima Sensor to test a brand that I enjoyed regularly, both at home and at my local coffee shop, and found that it was indeed NOT gluten-free! The website that I purchased the loose-leaf tea from explicitly stated that their black tea was gluten-free. Well, yes, the tea leaves are gluten-free but they also manufacture tea that is not gluten-free in their facility and this particular tea was possibly subject to cross-contamination.
I have since reached out to this company, and they were VERY apologetic and stated that they would speak to their marketing team and remove that statement from their website.

What Is Green Tea

Gluten In Teabags Really
A number of tea companies use sealants for their teabags that contain gluten. Theres no gluten in the tea itself, but once you dip that bag in boiling water and the glue starts to melt, youre picking up a tiny bit of gluten. By tiny bit, were talking a few parts per million in the brewed tea here, which is a tiny fraction of what it takes to cause reactions in someone with celiac disease. But if youre actually looking for ZERO gluten content, were not quite there yet.
So if youre buying loose-leaf unflavored straight black tea, green tea, oolong, pu-erh, or white tea, all is well. If youre buying teabags, youd better take a closer look at that label.
Does Lipton Tea Have Gluten
Lipton tea: Lipton, which is made by Unilever, does not publish a list of gluten-free tea varieties. According to the company: all Numi Teas are gluten-free. Our teas are packaged in facilities and on machines that do not process or work with gluten. Numi teabags are made from manila hemp cellulose plant fiber.

A Lot Of Things Are Called Tea That Arent Tea
As the first paragraph said, real tea comes from Camellia sinensis. But many people refer to anything that involves steeping leaves or flowers in hot water as tea: yerba maté, rooibos, chamomile, honeybush, and so forth. Technically, they are tisanes or infusions, but they are often sold as tea.
So if youre buying actual black tea, green tea, oolong, pu-erh, or white tea, all is well. If youre buying herbal tea, youd better take a closer look at that label .
Starbucks Almond Milk Ingredients
In case you were wondering, here are the ingredients in their almond milk. Filtered Water, Almonds, Sugar, Tricalcium Phosphate, Sunflower Lecithin, Sea Salt, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2 . It unfortunately still has xanthan gum and guar gum, but its hard not to find that in restaurant/fast food almond milk.

What Do The Survey Results Mean
Of the 199 samples tested in this survey, over 93% did not contain any detectable levels of allergens and gluten, while only 12 samples were found to contain varying levels of gluten or sesame.
All plant-derived foods such as teas contain polyphenolsFootnote 6. However, the presence of the polyphenols in teas leads to low recovery levels for casein, peanut and sesame tests, which means the accuracy for these 3 tests is low. Casein testing was excluded from this survey.
The extent of the follow-up actions taken by the CFIA is based on the level of contamination and the resulting health concern as determined by a health risk assessment. Appropriate follow-up actions include additional sample testing, facility inspection and product recall. The health risk assessment is based on exposure to the allergens and gluten through consumption. The exposure is calculated by using the typical serving sizes for each food. Assessment based on serving size means not all detectable levels of undeclared allergens and gluten in food will cause a reaction in an allergic individual.
