Have Costco Hot Dogs Always Been Gluten Free

Costco has served hot dogs since the year 1984, when they began as a hot dog cart in front of their San Diego warehouse. At the time, the hot dog brand they used was Hebrew National.

However, even when they used Hebrew National hot dogs, Costcos hot dogs were still totally free of any gluten. So, Costco hot dogs have contained no gluten since 1984!

Costco changed to using Kirkland hot dogs in 2009. These hot dogs are specifically manufactured by Costco themselves, in order to accommodate the popularity of their hot dog combo.

Is It Safe For Celiacs To Consume Hot Dogs

The Gluten-Free Certification Organizations certified gluten-free hot dogs meet a tighter requirement of 10 ppm or less of the protein, which is found naturally in wheat, barley, and rye. The National Celiac Association certifies gluten-free hot dogs that have fewer than 5 parts per million of gluten. Individuals with gluten intolerance or celiac disease should probably stick to certified gluten-free hot dogs.

What We Were Looking For:

We set out to find the best hot dogs made from poultry, choosing from brands that are widely available in the United States. Our contenders could be called franks, frankfurters, wieners, or hot dogs, and could be made primarily with either turkey or chicken. A few options were taken out of the running because they contain beef products . Be sure to check the ingredients list if youre trying to avoid beef ! None of the selections in our tasting contained pork.

We wanted the dogs to have a classic hot dog flavor profile: paprika, garlic, smoke. Other spices were welcome as long as they didnt steer the dogs too far into robust sausage territory. Some of our favorite franks were seasoned with coriander, ginger, cardamon, mace, and nutmeg. Celery juice powder is often used in hot dogs as a preservative, and it sometimes lends an overt celery flavor to the franks as well. A few of the dogs we tasted leaned too far in that direction, or had an overpowering taste of onion. Both of these latter flavorings lent a chicken soup taste to some of the selections, which we didnt find particularly appealing. Too much celery powder also made some of the dogs taste bitter.

The best turkey hot dogsor chickenhad to have good texture, which meant a distinctive contrast between the exterior surface and interior. The filling also needed to have some springy bite: not too smooth, soft, or mushy in texture but also not too gritty or gristly, as some franks proved to be.

What Other Brands Of Hot Dogs Are Gluten Free

While Nathans Famous is a rock star gluten free hot dog brand, they are not the only ones out there creating gluten free hot dogs.

There are also many other brands that can provide gluten free hot dogs, and several of them are made in a separate, gluten free facility, just like Nathans.

Two certified gluten free hot dog brands are Sabrett and Dietz & Watson. Both of these brands are absolutely guaranteed to be without gluten, and they are even tested by a third party to fulfil the certified gluten free requirements.

Applegate Farms is another brand which produces all of its hot dogs in a separate gluten free facility, like Nathans. So, you can rest assured that their hot dogs are not likely to be cross contaminated.

There are many other labeled gluten free hot dog brands, which produce either some or all of their hot dogs without any gluten ingredients. Some of these brands include Bar-S, Hoffy, Jennie-O, and Oscar Mayer.

The important thing to remember if you are gluten free is to check the labels of every hot dog brand you are considering buying. If there is a risk of cross contamination, the packaging will say on it that the hot dogs were produced in a facility which may contain gluten.

If there are any gluten ingredients, they are required to be disclosed on the packaging.

The Other Hot Dogs We Tasted:

One big takeaway from this test is that, if well-charred and covered in toppings, almost any of these hot dogs would do on a hot summer day.

Our least favorite dogs were steeped with the flavor of artificial smokewhich is not a bad ingredient when used in moderation, but here, occasionally overpowered all else. Other options were bland and flavorless. Some had an odd assortment of spices or flavorings that took them too far out of the hot dog realm for our tasters.

For many, texture was the biggest issue: either too bouncy or full of gnarly bits of gristle. Ingredients ostensibly meant to improve texture such as various starches, corn syrup, and other fillers did not largely prove successful. Another thing we didnt like was a frank with an extra-tough skin that made it hard to bite cleanly through the dog , or one that collapsed into mush with every bite.

What follows is a list of all of the franks we tasted that havent been called out by name above. Theyre listed in order of preference, so if you have trouble finding our top picks, we recommend seeking out a few of the early mentions below.

Are Oscar Mayer Turkey Hot Dogs Safe To Eat

The answer to this depends on you as an individual. If you are not allergic to gluten, and you are simply gluten free as a diet choice, then Oscar Mayer turkey hot dogs will be perfectly safe for you.

You only run a very mild risk of cross contamination, which should not involve enough gluten contact to affect your diet.

If you suffer from celiac disease, or are otherwise severely allergic to gluten, it may be best to skip on these turkey dogs.

This is just because they do run the risk of cross contamination, so you may encounter a hot dog that has come into contact with gluten at some point in its creation or packaging process.

The Other Best Turkey Hot Dog: Applegate Naturals

Amid a sea of pale and, honestly, quite flaccid franks, the Applegate Naturals turkey hot dogs earned praise from our tasters for looking like a real dog due to their appealing pink color. That rosy glow comes from cherry powder, which also seems to round out the flavor with a touch of tang and sweetness. These dogs get good spice from garlic and paprika, and we also detected a hint of bright-but-earthy coriander. They are nice and juicymore so than even our winnerand well-seasoned with sea salt.

These are skinless franks, but they still grill well, developing a nice contrast between snappy surface texture and softer interior. Associate food editor Kendra Vaculin singled them out as the ideal candidate for butterflying and serving well-charred with plenty of mustard.

Applegate sources humanely raised birds raised in the Mid-Atlantic region for all of its poultry products. It should be noted, however, that this is the Applegate Naturals line and not the Applegate Organics linealthough the brands The Great Organic Uncured Turkey Hot Dogs scored just a few points behind their nonorganic sisters in our taste test. We found the organic version to have a slightly softer texture , but we certainly wouldnt be mad if it showed up to the party instead.
