Schwans Home Delivery recently added organic and gluten-free foods in the forms of fruits, vegetables and pizzas. Admittedly, I came to this knowledge because a Schwans representative offered to send samples of each.
I took the fruits and vegetables home for a massively unscientific study and taste test with my family and sent the gluten-free pizzas home with a friend whose family has gluten sensitivities.

First up were the mango chunks, which were made into smoothies then subjected to a blind taste test against Dole mango chunks. My wife, the designated smoothie maker in our house, prepared the samples, and my daughter and I tasted. Hands down, we both chose the Schwans smoothie because the fruit was fully blended and much sweeter. Although my wife knew which was which, she agreed the Schwans was better, giving it a clean sweep in the taste test.
The other organic fruit offering a blend of pineapple, blueberries and mango didnt fare as well in a smoothie. It wasnt tested against another name-brand blend but we preferred the straight mango smoothie. None of the individual fruit flavors stood out in the smoothie. However, mixed with yogurt the fruits were more flavorful and distinct.

Removal of four ingredient groups underway
BLOOMINGTON, Minn.—-The Schwan Food Company is proud to announce today a commitment to eliminating four ingredient groups from its broad food portfolio with the goal of making foods with more familiar ingredients. This initiative to simplify ingredient lists is part of Schwans longtime work to evolve its foods to meet the health and wellness expectations of consumers.
The company is committing to eliminate the following ingredient groups from the food made by its Schwans Global Supply Chain, Inc. subsidiary:
- Partially hydrogenated oils and artificial trans fats. The company eliminated added trans fats from the vast majority of foods leading up to 2007. It has committed to eliminating partially hydrogenated oils a source of trans fats in all foods by the end of 2015.
- Artificial dyes. The company has committed to removing artificial dyes from all foods by the end of 2015.
