What Is Cookies And Cream Ice Cream
For the uninitiated, Cookies and Cream Ice Cream is a super-creamy vanilla ice cream that is shot through with little crunchy pieces of Oreo cookies. Specifically, the very dark, crunchy cocoa-based chocolate Oreo cookies that are sandwiched with a sweet white creme filling.
Allegedly first created in 1979 by Joe Leedom , it is now third on the list of top-selling ice creams in the United States .
What To Look For
Sauces and baked goods, like cookie dough in ice cream, are generally a giveaway of gluten. Look for ingredients such as wheat flour and barley malt syrup, which contain gluten. Many brands will also include a note in the ingredients section about allergens like gluten or soy.
While ice cream that doesnt have any ingredients that contain gluten listed on the label is safe for people with gluten sensitivity or people who are hoping to avoid gluten, there is still a risk of cross-contamination. People with celiac disease should avoid them.
Cross-contamination is a major concern for the 3 million people in the United States with celiac disease. Even microscopic amounts of gluten can cause a reaction, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For people with celiac disease, its extremely important that ice cream be labeled as gluten-free, or that it has a gluten-free certification. All foods labeled as gluten-free, free of gluten, no gluten, or without gluten must have less than 20 parts per million of gluten, according to

Kick Off Summer With These Gluten
by Jeff R | Jun 9, 2017 | Community
With summer fast approaching, our minds and taste buds are turning to one thing: ice cream! Thankfully there are TONS of gluten-free ice cream options brands that specialize in making sure your choices are easy. But those options arent always easy to find, despite their numbers. Weve collected the best gluten-free brands and tips on using your Nima to help you make the best choices this summer!
Lots of ice creams and gelatos have dairy but are still gluten-free. While some are highly localized and offer local ingredients, others are more widespread. Heres a list of just a few:
Turkey Hill, an East Coast brand, whose super cool online flavor finder search tool can identify their gluten-free varieties.
Jönes Gelato this San Francisco-based gelato brand is completely paleo and features all the classic flavors. Its available across the Bay Area and in other cities on the West Coast.
Arctic Zero, a frozen dessert made from whey protein, which makes it free of lactose, but not dairy. Every flavor is gluten-free except cookie dough chip, brownie blast and snickerdoodle dandy chunky.
Talenti probably the most widely available gelato brand, Talenti has more than two dozen gluten-free options to chose from and an easy online listing to help find the right flavors.
DF Mavens boasts an entire vegan and GF line, and which also makes gluten-free ice cream bars!
What To Watch For When Buying Gluten
When buying GF ice cream, youll want to avoid anything with cookies , brownies, or cone pieces unless the product is from one of the certified gluten-free ice cream brands.
Many sauces may be thickened with wheat flour, which contains gluten.
Additionally, malted products are made of malted barley and wheat flour, which are not safe for celiacs or those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Avoid malt in any form, even if the label lists malt powder.
Remember, the allergen information on the label does not always contain enough data to keep you safe if you have to avoid gluten. Thats because manufacturers only have to list the top eight allergens, which doesnt include gluten . Barley malt extract, for example, contains no wheat ingredients, so wheat wouldnt be listed on the allergen label of a product containing malt but no wheat. The absence of wheat does not necessarily make the product safe.
Additionally, look for phrases like, Manufactured in a facility that processes wheat, because you could get sick from cross contamination, depending on how sensitive you are.
Grab a gluten-free ice cream cone and heap that sucker with one of these safe ice cream options. But before you do, comment below and let us know which of these gluten-free ice cream brands you like the most.
Go get your grub on!

Is Ice Cream Gluten
Im starting a new series of posts where I answer some common questions that dont really fit anywhere else, and Im starting with the sometimes desperate question , Is ice cream gluten-free? This is a little tricky to answer because the general, base answer is yes, but in most specific situations the answer is no.
The basic ingredients of ice cream are gluten-free: milk, cream, and sugar, with eggs or a gum added in some cases. If it is a simple, natural ice cream, flavorings like natural vanilla bean and chocolate are also gluten-free.
But unfortunately, ice cream ingredients are rarely this simple and natural anymore, and even natural ice creams may contain ingredients with gluten in them, the most obvious that comes to mind is chocolate chip cookie dough.
So the answer is: it varies.
To stay safe, only try ice cream specifically labeled gluten-free. Dont assume anything as many ice cream brands are loaded with unnecessary ingredients, many of which may contain gluten in a manner not specified on the label.
In addition, try to stay with simple flavors. Fancy combination flavors like Super Kitty Litter Krunch are more likely to incorporate a hidden source of gluten or to suffer from cross-contamination during its manufacturing and packaging.

Easy Peasy No Churn Ice Cream
For this gluten free, no churn ice cream I started with chopped up Goodie Girls Chocolate Creme Cookies. These cookies taste just like I remember Oreos tasting, but of course, they are gluten free and are also made in a peanut free facility. You can buy them in boxes or snack packs.
I love the snack packs! For this recipe, you will need 2 snack packs or 16 cookies.
You take all these crushed up cookies and add them to your no churn ice cream mixture. The no churn mixture is made up of whipped heavy cream and condensed milk.
Once the gluten free no churn cookies and cream ice cream is all mixed together it goes into the freezer for a few hours or overnight. So simple.
