Major Tamari Brand To Avoid
Hopefully you enjoyed this listing.
Although its not a massive list and a few may seem to be missing, these are the safest choices and are highly recommended by most Celiacs and gluten free dieters.
The only one major tamari thats missing is the one by La Choy.
Although all the ingredients are gluten free with no wheat presence, some people have reacted to this soy sauce. This could be due to cross contamination during manufacturing or other variables.
So be sure to steer clear from La Choy if youre allergic. Now if youre on a non-medical gluten free diet or paleo, you should be fine with this soy sauce.

Baja Fish Taco Recipe: Gluten
To make gluten-free fish batter, I start with my gluten-free tempura recipe. Rice flour makes the perfect gluten-free fish batter for these baja fish tacos. It fries up light and crisp with a neutral taste.
For the gluten-free fish breading, I first dredge the fish in flour before dipping it into the batter. This makes sure you get a thick even layer of batter that will actually stick to the slick fish.
Since the fish is so mild, I gave the batter a little extra flair with some seasoning – paprika, garlic powder, and a little more salt – to make sure the fried fish was super flavorful on its own.

Is Fish Sauce Vegan
The vegan lifestyle involves the exclusion of all animal products. The reason being that any product derived from an animal is considered cruel. After all, inhumane practices are rampant in the industry. The same goes for seafood items.
Fish sauce is not vegan as it contains fish, just as the name suggests. Although the taste comes from the fermentation, rather than the fish itself, its still fish. So vegans cannot eat fish sauce as its made with animals.
However, its possible to make very similar cruelty-free products. Thats because the distinct taste comes from the fermentation rather than the fish. So its entirely possible to make similar sauces from cruelty-free ingredients.
Are you a vegan looking for a vegan fish sauce substitute? Well, you are in luck. There are plenty of vegan fish sauces available at Amazon, as the Fysh Sauce. -Take a look at this particular fish sauce that I have used myself.
What To Put On A Baja Fish Taco
A baja fish taco typically consists of battered fried fish, a thick cream sauce, and crisp tangy cabbage slaw all folded up in a corn tortilla. Flavorful baja fish tacos need some heat and lots of lime juice. Simple and fresh.
For this orange cabbage slaw, I used the zest and juice of Vintage Sweets heirloom naval oranges. These oranges come from trees that are 50-100 years old. Their fruit perfectly balances the sweetness and acidity so the oranges pop with brightness.

Are Sauces Which Contain Barley Gluten Free
Please note I have updated this section since Coeliac UK updated its guidelines on barley malt and will continue to check for relevant updates .
Sauces which contain barley are one of the main confusions here, so let me explain.
When you’re diagnosed with coeliac disease, you’re told barley is one of things you cannot eat.
So it’s not surprising so many people are confused that some of these condiments and sauces below are gluten free! And the plot thickens…
Because previously things like Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce and Branston Pickle were previously marked as safe in the Coeliac UK Food and Drink Guide.
But now they are no longer listed as being suitable for people with coeliac disease.
Is Fish Sauce Gluten
Gluten is a protein most commonly found in wheat. Although its present in a wide range of different foods. Although gluten is merely a protein, many opt to avoid it and see many benefits. Some are gluten-free due to intolerance, and others simply do it as a health concern. -So is fish sauce gluten-free?
Fish sauce is typically gluten-free. Although its not safe to assume that all fish sauce is gluten-free, as some contain wheat.
So the gluten-free, for whatever reason, need to read the ingredients. Otherwise, you could be eating gluten without even knowing it. This is a big deal for the intolerant as even small amounts can cause many ill effects.
You also need to make sure your fish sauce is not produced alongside gluten products. Thats essential as otherwise trace amounts can be present. It might not be a big issue for all gluten-free, but the intolerant in particular need to show caution.
Read the ingredients, or opt for fish sauces listed as gluten-free. Take a look at this gluten-free fish sauce from Red Boat. -Thats definitely the safest choice.

Contains A Flour Base That Has Gluten
Traditionally, the spicy, vibrant red kimchi paste is thickened using glutinous rice flour, which is 100% gluten-free. However some chefs or Korean moms may opt for a different flour paste to mix into their kimchi base, that may contain gluten. Whether its store-bought or homemade, take the time to double-check, which type of flour was used.

Why Is Some Barley Malt Vinegar No Longer Gluten Free
Coeliac UK has recently updated its guidelines stating that it will no longer be listing products containing barley malt extract or barley malt vinegar unless they are labelled as gluten free.
This is placing a greater responsibility on the manufacturers to confirm that products contain less than 20ppm of gluten and can be labelled as gluten free.
It means 187 products have been removed from Coeliac UK’s ‘safe’ list – including Branston Pickle, Lea and Perrins and Sarson’s Malt Vinegar.
However, a couple of products which are still listed as safe, and a good gluten free alternative, include:
- Heinz Rich and Tangy Sandwich Pickle
- Blenders Malt Vinegar 10ml sachets
- Heinz Chunky Classic Ploughman’s Pickle
Obviously Coeliac UK is continuing to contact manufacturers and if any of the removed products appear safe again, I will update this guide and let you know!
This is why the Coeliac UK scanner app is so useful – I use it all the time and it’s helped me discover loads of products I didn’t know I could eat.
Your Guide To Gluten Free Sauces And Condiments
September 30, 2020 by Sarah Howells
One thing that used to always trip me up when I was first diagnosed with coeliac disease is working out which sauces are gluten free.
It’s easy to remember the obvious things that contain gluten, like bread, pasta, cakes, pizza – basically anything battered, breadcrumbed or beige!
But I find the most difficult things are the things you don’t think to check.
For example, I’ll happily grill the waiter at a restaurant for hours on their cross contamination processes when ordering a plate of chips.
But then I’ll slather them in tomato ketchup or mayonnaise without even thinking about if it’s gluten free.

The Easiest Way To Make Gluten
There are many ways to make fish pie. By poaching the fish first, various crusts, different seafood, the variation of herbs and choices of veggies. I wanted to make this fish pie as simple as possible, and trust me, there is nothing complicated in this recipe.
First, the mashed potatoes, very simple. But, it is essential to use the right potato to keep them fluffy and creamy without lumps. I recommend using russet or Yukon gold. They are perfect for making mashed potatoes, make sure they are tender before whipping them up. I also add a pinch of nutmeg to the potatoes for extra flavour.
For the creamy fish filling, sauté leeks or onions in some butter. Add in garlic, then milk with your herbs. I used a bay leaf, tarragon and clove. Simmer the milk for a few minutes. The herbs infuse the milk with a delicate flavour
For the fish, once the milk is deliciously flavoured with the herbs, add the seafood and cook for three minutes. This poaches the fish. Now finish the sauce by combining the cream with tapioca flour and dijon mustard. This will make the white sauce nice and thick. Add remaining ingredients in the fish sauce and cook just long enough until it starts to thicken about three to five minutes
Now that everything is ready spoon the filling into a deep pie dish or an ovenproof dish of choice and top with the mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with cheese and bake until the potatoes are crispy. Done!
Ingredients In Fish Sauce
Firstly, we need to identify the typical ingredients of fish sauce. There are many different recipes for fish sauces. They all use different ingredients that are still very much the same.
For example, the salt in fish sauce can be many different salts. That might not sound like a big deal to you, but it makes a big difference. So while fish sauces are very different in taste, most ingredients are essentially the same.
There are also differences in which fish are used and so on. Although all fish sauces are made of fish. Otherwise, its merely not a fish sauce. However, there are many vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free fish sauce options available.

Most Common Questions About Fish Pie
What type of seafood do you use in a fish pie?
You can use any fish, salmon, cod, halibut, seabass, snapper, prawns, shrimp and often some smoked fish like cod. I used two pounds, but you can use between one to two pounds. It depends on how much fish you like to have in the pie. If you have less fish, add more vegetables
What vegetables are used in a fish pie?
Typical vegetable in this British dish is green peas preferably petite peas. Other vegetables are leeks, onions, parsnips, corn, carrots, and celery. This is entirely up to you. I used leeks, petite peas and corn
What do you serve with fish pie?
Again, a personal preference. I find that the fish pie is so hearty that there is no need to add anything. But, a light salad is probably the best choice. The pie already has potatoes and veggies in the filling. My recommendation, serve the pie as is, it is plenty hearty on its own. Another pie you may enjoy is the gluten-free cottage pie
The Essential Gluten Free Guide To Vietnam
If I had to choose one cuisine to eat for the rest of my life, I would immediately opt for Vietnamese food. I spent several winters exploring the country, with time spent in Saigon and Hanoi, in Hue and Danang, and eating as much as I could every second of every day. As a celiac, eating gluten free in Vietnam was not only possible but gloriously easy. Once I learned the ingredients I needed to avoid, I stuck to street food where I could see dishes being made and I explored to my taste buds content.
The following guide will help people navigate Vietnam with an eye to avoiding gluten. I am very sensitive and have avoided some dishes at restaurants where oil could be contaminated. The benefit of street food is that often the stalls are one-stop wonders, and if it involves something fried on the spot, the oil is only used for that product.
Eating in Vietnam was a pleasure, but also a good part of why I love to write about food. It isnt just about taste, but the experience of sharing a meal in the midst of chaos, sitting on a blue plastic chair.
I hope this guide, twinned with my long Saigon Street Food Guide will make your time in Vietnam exciting, delicious, and filled with incredible sights.
