How To Bake Garlic Bread

We recommend baking this bread in a simple two-step process. First, you bake the bread slathered in garlic butter in the middle of a pre-heated 350ºF oven until the bread is nice and toasty, and the garlic butter is melted into the bread. And then, you turn on the broiler and move the bread to the top rack to broil for 2-3 minutes, or until the bread is bubbling all over. This second step is essential for making sure the garlic gets fully cooked.

What Is The Best Type Of Yeast To Use In This Gluten

This recipe uses instant yeast or rapid rise yeast. I use Fleshmans Rapid Rise Yeast. It is important to use the rapid yeast and to make sure it is at room temperature.

Rapid rise yeast does not need to be proofed and can be added directly to the flour. It is still important to use warm water because yeast is a live organism and thrives in a warm environment.

Heat the water just until it feels warm to the touch. Or use a thermometer to check the waters temperature. The ideal temperature for instant yeast is 100°110°F. If the water is any hotter than that, it could kill the yeast and your bread will not rise.

If you want to make sure that your instant yeast is still active, you can proof the yeast before adding it to the flour mixture. Add the honey to the warm water and stir until it dissolves.

Then add the yeast to the water mixture and allow to sit for 5 minutes until bubbly. This is not a necessary step. This is only needed if your yeast is not new or fresh.

I have not tried active dried yeast in this recipe. Active dried yeast requires a proofing step. Active dried yeast also requires a longer rising time.

What is the Best Gluten Free Bread? In this taste test, one gluten free mom and two gluten-eating, semi-picky kids choose their favorite loaf of gluten-free bread to help you decide what to buy for sandwiches and toast.

Gluten free bread is often what makes transitioning to a gluten free diet the most challenging. It often has a different flavor and texture, making it harder to enjoy staples like sandwiches and toast.

And it is usually more expensive than regular bread. That means you can spend a lot of money before you find your favorite. So we are here to help narrow it down.

In The Kitchen: Using Frozen Bread

Whether you buy already frozen bread, or freeze your own to preserve it, there are a few things I have learned about thawing and reheating frozen bread.

In order to prevent adding lots of chemical preservatives, many gluten-free and vegan breads come already frozen in loaves or rolls. When I first became gluten-free, I avoided frozen bread and freezing bread because I thought that ultimately killed the flavor and the texture of the product. Fortunately, I have learned that freezing bread is not nearly as bad as I thought it was. You can reheat it and retain its texture and flavor!

I order my bread from California-based Bread Srsly and it comes in multi-loaf packages. Im only one person and cannot eat three loaves in one week. If I did not freeze the bread before its use by date, I would be wasting a lot of money and good bread.

The key is knowing how to care and warm up those frozen slices and rolls.

My first tip: Slice bread into slices before freezing. Otherwise you have to thaw the entire loaf at once and its freshness timeline starts ticking down again. It also takes a long time for an entire loaf to thaw. The time to reheat individual pieces is much shorter and there is a better chance it will thaw uniformly.

How To Store Gluten Free Bread

Best Gluten-free bread – all natural ingredients, soft, and Yummee!

When storing gluten free bread, its important to keep it in the fridge. You can also store it in the freezer for best freshness but its important that you slice your bread before storing. Its really difficult to slice into a frozen, gluten free bread, so make sure you do this!

Gluten free bread is best enjoyed freshly toasted regardless, so my preferred method of storage is slicing, freezing and toasting.

What Is The Best Type Of Bread Pan For Baking Gluten

I test baked this gluten-free bread in two different types of bread pans. I used both a 9-inch x 4-inch Small Pullman loaf pan and a Wilton 9-inch x 5-inch non-stick pan.

I highly recommend using the 9-inch x 4-inch small Pullman loaf pan with this recipe. The Pullman loaf pan has a narrow bottom with steep, high sides and a ridged surface that gives gluten-free bread dough the extra support to help it rise the best. I did not use the lid in this recipe. I only bought the Pullman loaf pan.

If you bake the gluten-free bread in a 9-inch x 5-inch bread pan, it will not rise as high because the pan is larger than the Pullman loaf pan. Even though it does not rise as high, it still as delicious!

Best Tasting: Le Veneziane Italian Fettucce

  • Taste and texture very close to pasta made from semolina flour

  • Finished pasta comes out tender, not starchy

  • Doesn’t lose its texture when reheated

  • Not low-carb

  • Low on fiber

Taste is a subjective measure, so its difficult to definitively assign this superlative to just one of the pastas on this list, especially since they all taste good. But if youre looking for a gluten-free pasta thats as close to the real thing as you can get, the Le Venezian Fettucce will not disappoint.

Its made from just one major ingredient, 100 percent Italian corn, and the taste and texture are right on par with pasta made from semolina flour, according to many happy customers. A 1/2 cup of dry pasta, which will get you about 1 cup of cooked pasta, has 45 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of fiber.

Base Ingredient: Italian corn | Net Weight: 8.8 ounces | Protein: 4 grams per serving | Fiber: 1 gram per serving

Canyon Bakehouse has been producing gluten-free breads for over 10 years in its dedicated gluten-free facility.

In addition to being certified gluten-free by GFCO, all of their products are soy-free, dairy-free, tree-nut-free, and peanut-free.

Canyon Bakehouse Ancient Grain Bread is made from a base of both tapioca and brown rice flour. It also contains several whole grains and seeds, including sorghum flour, oat flour, sunflower seeds, millet, teff, amaranth, and quinoa.

In addition to containing high quality ingredients, Ancient Grain Bread is low in sugar and has a thickness similar to that of traditional sliced bread. Reviewers like that its enjoyable both toasted and straight from the package.

One slice provides 70 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 0 grams of saturated fat, 90 mg of sodium, 13 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fiber, 2 grams of sugar, including 2 grams of added sugars, and 2 grams of protein .

Unlike many gluten-free breads, Canyon Bakehouse Ancient Grain Bread doesnt need to be frozen or refrigerated. Due to its packaging process, an unopened loaf will keep for 90 days after packaging. Once opened, it should be enjoyed within 5 days.

Where To Buy Gluten

Our Favorite Gluten

Supermarkets

In supermarkets and supermarket chains, there are three possible locations for gluten-free bread, so before giving up, make sure you have checked all three places!

1st location: in the frozen sectionMany gluten-free breads are kept frozen to maintain freshness. Check to see if there is a specific gluten-free section. If there isn’t, you will most likely find the bread by the breakfast items, like the frozen egg sandwiches, sausages, and pancakes. Grocery stores tend to group like items together. 2nd location: in the gluten-free aisleIf the supermarket where you are shopping has an aisle dedicated to organic, healthy, or gluten-free food, be sure to check there next! Many times I’ve found Schar, and Glutino bread on the shelf, while Canyon Bakehouse, Udi’s, and Three Bakers will be in the freezer section.3rd location: with the regular bread This is the riskiest place to put gluten-free bread, in my opinion. Not only is there the chance of cross-contamination if a bag of bread accidentally opens, but the possibility of selecting a loaf of bread that isn’t gluten-free due to similar packaging is concerning. Please triple check that what you are placing in your cart is labeled gluten-free!

I’m thankful that my local Market Basket here in Massachusetts, they keep the gluten-free bread in the bread aisle on the very top shelves!

Buying Guide For Best Gluten

People follow a gluten-free diet for a number of reasons. Some follow it because they dont like the taste of wheat or want to limit their intake of carbs, while others suffer from gluten intolerances or sensitivities. Gluten-free bread used to have the reputation of being flavourless, but today there are bountiful options when it comes to bread. Gone are the days of crumbly or cardboard-like gluten-free bread. Thanks to the many types of flour available on the market, there is plenty of variety in gluten-free bread, all of them made with unconventional ingredients that help mimic traditional bread.

When buying gluten-free bread, carefully read the ingredients list and, if possible, steer clear of any that have lots of preservatives and artificial sweeteners. You can buy gluten-free bread pre-baked or in a mix if you want to experiment with baking your own at home. If you suspect that products with gluten are causing issues for you, consult a doctor before going on a gluten-free diet.

Weve put together this guide to help you navigate the process of choosing a delicious gluten-free bread that fits your needs, and weve included some of our favourites, too.

What Is Gluten Free Bread Made Out Of

There is not a single Gluten Free flour that will substitute Wheat flour unless you buy a premade Gluten Free bread mix. I tried many pre-made Gluten Free bread mixes and ended up throwing it in the garbage because it tasted nothing like making it from scratch. One of the hurdles of Gluten Free Bread baking is buying many ingredients to start. You have to mix a blend of several kinds of flour to make a tasty Gluten Free bread. All ingredients listed below can be purchased at your local grocery store, health food store, or online. Some flour is harder to find, such as Quinoa and Oat flour, so I purchase them on Amazon. The good part is that you keep reusing them, and even though its an initial investment, youll get many delicious healthy loaves out of these ingredients.
