Coconut flour also has the longest lifespan of just about all gluten-free flours. It will keep in the fridge for up to a yearjust dont store it in the pantry because its not shelf-stable.

Buy In Bulk For Better Value

You can buy gluten-free all-purpose flour in an individual package, or in bulk quantities. Individual packages are anywhere from 8 to 32 ounces apiece. Its a good idea to stick with individual bags if you dont plan on using gluten-free flour often, especially since gluten-free flour is only shelf-stable for a few months.

If you expect to use a lot of it on a regular basis for daily cooking and baking, youll save big if you buy gluten-free all-purpose flour in bulk. This usually entails buying three to ten packages at a time from a store or seller. The initial cash outlay may make it seem costly, but in the long run, you can end up saving a few dollars per pound.

Anthonys Brown Rice Flour

Best for cooking

Brown rice flour is a popular choice because its minimally gritty and super light. Its taste is mild, unlike some other alternatives . Anthonys is also non-GMO and made from stone-ground, medium-grain brown rice. Rice flours low protein content means that it doesnt produce the best results in baked goods, as it wont hold the dough together as well as other options. If you want to use rice flour to bake, pair it with other gluten-free flours that can help the structure. On its own, rice flour is best as a thickener for soups, sauces and stews and as a way to dredge meat for frying or for making noodles, though Anthonys reviewers also say its wonderful for pancakes. Be sure to store it in the fridge for up to five months or in your freezer for up to a year.

Buying Guide For Best Gluten

Krusteaz Flour, Gluten Free, All Purpose

Gluten is a catch-all name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley. For those who choose to follow gluten-free diets, either by choice or for health reasons, it can be challenging to find a suitable alternative to wheat flour, which is present in many foods. Thankfully, gluten-free all-purpose flour reopens the door to home cooking and baking.

Gluten-free all-purpose flour is typically made from a creative mixture of ingredients, including tapioca, rice, or sorghum flour. While theres no official combination recipe for these flours as recipes vary widely among manufacturers they all aim not only to be gluten-free but also to be produced on gluten-free equipment.

Of course, cooking with gluten-free all-purpose flour comes with a different set of rules. Recipe balancing, substitution ratios, and trying out different combinations all come into play.

September 15, 2016 by Kendra

Since Kolton needs to eat gluten free I often feel bad baking our regular treats, and thus dont bake at all. Problem is, I enjoy baking. So Ive been trying to learn how to better bake with gluten free flours. Gluten free banana nut bread is my latest accomplishment.

We love almond flour but its so pricey that I dont like to buy it often. Coconut flour is my next favorite, but its very high in fiber and well lets just say that high fiber foods and a toddler in underwear dont exactly mix!

I decided to try a bag of all purpose gluten free flour and see if that helped me any. It was supposed to be a 1:1 substitute for regular flour but Im not quite convinced as a few tweaks were needed so the dough seemed the right consistency.

The end result though is great, and it actually has the same texture and even taste as a wheat banana bread! Needless to say, Im pleased with the results. Best of all, Kolton loves it and he has a treat he can eat!

Why Is My Gluten

The dreaded gummy gluten-free cake is the mortal enemy of the baking world. The most common culprit in a gummy gluten-free cake is white rice flour. However, gummy cakes can also be an issue with using the wrong or too much starch. Reduce your amount of tapioca or sweet rice flour or try swapping with different ones.

Ottos Naturals Cassava Flour

Best for brownies, cookies and cakes

Made from yucca root, cassava flour is a smooth, powdery substance thats similar to tapioca flour. It has a mild earthy flavor on its own but tastes more neutral when baked. Ottos Natural doesnt add any other flours to the mix eitherits just pure non-GMO yucca root. Because cassava flour absorbs more liquid than wheat flour, its great for baking dense treats like cookies, cakes and brownies rather than yeasted ones like bread or doughnuts. You can also use it for pizza crust, breading or pasta, since those dont require much lift.

    Terrasoul Superfoods Organic Almond Flour

    Best almond flour

If you dont have a nut allergy, almond flour is definitely worth a try. It offers a boost of protein and fiber to any recipe, plus has a pretty neutral taste that makes it super versatile. Terrasouls almond flour is made from blanched Spanish almonds and has a superfine texture. Its also free of chemical residues, like propylene oxide, that are common in other almond flours. While you wont be able to substitute it one for one for wheat flour, adding more flour than whats called for in a recipe can help you get a stiffer batter or dough. You can also use xanthan gum, egg whites or psyllium husk powder to achieve a sturdier texture. Use almond flour to make cookies, pancakes, quick breads and other baked goods.
