There are many plant-based ice creams on the market today, a handful of which are better than others. Some are unpleasantly icy and thin, while others lack any real flavor. The process of making non-dairy ice cream takes a lot of trial and error to replicate the rich creaminess of traditional ice cream without the milk or cream. Not everyone can pull it off, but the items on this list can.

Have a bowl and spoon at the ready for the best non-dairy ice creams.

Its probably not a huge shock to see Ben & Jerrys at the top of any “best ice cream” list, and the frozen dessert kings nailed it again with this version of “Milk” & Cookies. While most non-dairy ice creams utilize coconut or almond as a base, the vanilla-flavored milk in this ice cream is actually made from sunflower butter. It also features chocolate chip cookies, chocolate sandwich cookies, and chocolate cookie swirls.

Ben & Jerrys offers two other sunflower butter-based flavorsCrème Brûlée Cookie and Mint Chocolate Cookie. Also, there are 12 almond milk flavors, including P.B. & Cookies and the millennial-inspired Netflix & Chillld, boasting peanut butter, sweet and salty pretzel swirls, and fudge brownies.

What 4 Ingredients Are Used To Make Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream

I am almost certain that any of my no churn ice creams can be made dairy free as well, because the recipe for this Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream is pretty much the same Except that it is vegan . The method also makes it one of the simplest ice cream recipes on the planet.

But what ingredients are used to make it that easy? Well basically, the usual whipped double cream and dairy condensed milk has been subbed for the vegan coconut versions of the same ingredients. Chilled well and whisked with care, coconut cream and coconut condensed milk give the same amazing result, but totally plant based! And I promise the taste of coconut is barely noticeable.

For best flavour and to make this a Vegan chocolate ice cream, I have added raw cacao powder which offers a deep natural chocolate hit and a hint of an anti-oxidant boost as well. The slight bitterness of the cacao perfectly offsets any excess sweetness from the condensed milk.

Although I prefer to use cacao, cocoa can be used instead. And adding a little vanilla extract gives a wonderful, slightly exotic backdrop too.

Whip Out Your Blender Or Food Processor

To make this banana ice cream, youll require either an electric blender or a food processor.

Both will work fine, but a blender will take a little longer simply because blenders tend to have smaller capacities than food processors.

If you choose to use a blender because you dont own a food processor , just bear in mind that you may need to put in smaller portions of bananas at a time, to prevent the motor of your blender from heating up too much.

Add 2 cups of frozen bananas and all the vanilla extract to the blender, blend it for a minute until the bananas are processed, then add the rest of the frozen bananas a bit at a time and blend until you get a creamy homogeneous mixture.

What Is The Best Way To Enjoy A Soft No Churn Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream

Like most home-made ice creams, this Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream doesnt have any unnecessary extra ingredients to make it extra soft. Coconut ice creams also have a lower level of fat , which while better to eat from a health perspective, will have an impact on how they freeze. Thus, Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream will freeze quite hard. Particularly if your freezer is very efficient.

At development stage, consideration was given to whether anything might be added to keep it softer at very low temperatures. Adding extra sugar for example can help to protect the liquid from freezing solid But the ice cream would then be way too sweet. And anything artificial would have affected the flavour.

In reality, the freezing has not proved to be a problem Leaving this vegan chocolate ice cream to sit at room temperature for a short while before eating usually softens it perfectly. The result? A gorgeously rich and creamy ice cream that rivals its dairy counterparts.

The Simplest Ice Cream Ever

If you love ice cream but have never made your own ice cream because it just sounds impossible, or because you dont own an ice cream maker, or simply because you never thought to try, Im here to tell you its time we correct that!

This banana ice cream that you see before you is an ice cream lovers bliss, that is if you like bananas, of course. I dont think making any ice cream, or any recipe for that matter, can get any simpler than this, and once you make this, youll always have an ice cream recipe to pull out of your back pocket anytime.

Arctic Zero Hint Of Mint

This sweet treat is weirdly… water-based. Don’t ask me how that works, but just know that it does. This pint has a hint of herbaceous mint on a chocolate-flavored base. It may not be as creamy as some of the other options that use milk alternatives, but its vast availability at regular supermarkets and low calorie count make it a worthy pick.

Can I Use A Different Dairy Free Milk In This Recipe

Portland’s Sticky Sweet makes vegan, gluten-free ice cream

Coconut milk that comes in a can is the best choice for this recipe. The creaminess from coconut milk is the perfect base for this dairy free ice cream. A different milk like flax milk or rice milk will not work well in this recipe.

If you dont have an ice cream maker at home, you might want to consider getting one! I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker and its so easy to use and doesnt take up much space.

You dont need to use any salt or ice, it just has a bowl that you store in your freezer. When youre ready to make ice cream, take the bowl out and put it on the base, add the ingredients, and turn it on! So easy, and such a fun way to make dessert during the summer months.

You can store this ice cream in the freezer if you arent going to eat it in one sitting. When you are ready to serve it again, you will need to allow time for thawing, as it will be very hard when frozen solid.

What Kind Of Vegan Ice Cream

After doing a lot of research, we came up with a recipe that uses dark chocolate, coconut cream and vanilla and a little dark rum to round it up. The combination of dark chocolate and coconut is a real winner. Then when you add in the nice brown sugar notes of a good dark rum, this combination is definitely a delicious frozen treat!

Of course no ice cream is complete without a little add in. We decided to stick with the whole specialty diet thing and keep this vegan and and gluten free. We had a great recipe for a gluten free, vegan and paleo no bake cookie which we figured would be a nice addition. It would give some texture and flavor. Really how can you go wrong with coconut flour, maple syrup and peanut butter?

Plus Vegan Sprinkles! Here are 2 suggestions: Here and Here.

Check Your Local Wholefood Stores

Actually, the first coconut condensed milk I came across was in a favourite local wholefood store. So, check and shop local first if possible.

I do confess to being a little excited when I found it. Actually excitement doesnt do the reaction justice I was seriously ecstatic Resulting in an almost possessive siege-like mentality .

Looking around suspiciously to see whether anyone else might have spotted my find almost the whole shelf-load was bundled into a basket, before I sidled up to the counter trying to look normal.

Who was I kidding? I looked like some crazed loon with the oddest addiction on the planet. But you know what? Those cans have brought happiness and lots of new-found creativity . And I feel smug that I snaffled them before anyone else got their hands on them.

Coolhaus Chocolate Sandwich Cookie Crumb

This brand is known for its wild flavor combinations. But the non-dairy ice creams they’re able to pull off are even wilder than french fries or churro dough swirled into scoops. One bite of this chocolate ice cream with cookie swirl, and you’ll understand. The folks at Coolhaus use pea and brown rice proteins to create a base for their non-dairy ice creams, so they don’t have to fight the coconut, nut, or soy flavors that typically permeate through other alternatives.

This New Vegan Gluten

A new non-dairy ice cream brand, Wildgood, is now selling frozen pints made with a tasty and nutritious but somewhat unexpected ingredient: olive oil.

Launched in April, Wildgood’s plant-based ice cream features extra virgin olive oil as the dessert’s main source of fat rather than milk fats. The first-of-its-kind non-dairy ice cream recipe is inspired by the Mediterranean diet and seeks to imitate the creaminess of real ice cream with this versatile cooking oil, according to a press release from the company. The cold-pressed olive oil is sourced from groves located in Greece that are owned by the family of company founder Sotiris Tsichlopoulos, who previously founded an Athens, Greece-based ice cream brand called To Pagoto.

Wildgood ice cream comes in eight flavors: chocolate, vanilla bean, coffee, mango, pistachio, chocolate hazelnut, sea salt caramel, and mint chocolate chip. And no, they shouldn’t taste noticeably like olive oil, the company says.

Non-dairy ice cream products typically use types of plant-based milk and oils to replace the creamy texture and mouthfeel created by milk fats found in traditional ice cream. By using extra-virgin olive oil as the fat base for their products, which is listed as the third ingredient after water and fructose, Wildgood may attract consumers with the health halo of a longtime Mediterranean diet staple.
