Why Do People Go Gluten Free

Cut-Out Keto Sugar Cookies {With Dairy-Free Options!}

People go gluten free for a variety of reasons, often the main misconception is that gluten is a root cause of health issues, or a ticket to weight loss. Gluten typically isnât an issue for the majority of people but for those who have celiac disease or a wheat allergy, it can be very dangerous.

I Decided That I’d Rather Have The Foods I Really Like Than Feel Only Slightly Better

I think that cutting these foods out for a week will help me reduce my intake in the future, since I now know so many good substitutes for them.

I believe a dairy- and gluten-free diet would be easier for someone who eats meat, since meat contains some of the protein, vitamins, and minerals you miss out on when cutting out gluten and dairy, and you would simply have more options.

I’d recommend that anyone who wants to try a similar diet should do their research beforehand, but in my experience, it might provide them with new, healthier options to try when they want to cut down on their gluten and dairy intakes.

A Note On Gluten Free Flours And Substitutions

When I initially developed this recipe, I used the Bobs Red Mill one-to-one all purpose flour. I decided to make another batch using the King Arthur Flour all purpose baking mix .

When I used the KAF all purpose baking mix, the dough ended up being more dry, so I had to add in a little bit of additional rice milk to help the dough stick together .

So if you are using a different gluten free all purpose flour or baking mix and the dough ends up looking dry and wont stick together like it should, add just a little bit of rice milk to it until it sticks together.

It should still look a bit crumbly, but should be easily pressed together into a firm dough thats not sticky.

Also, some gluten free baking mixes have salt in them and other gluten free all purpose flours do not, so check the label on the one youre using. If your gluten free flour blend has salt in it, omit the salt in this recipe.

I updated this recipe with the flour recommendation of Bobs Red Mill one-to-one gluten free flour. Some people have noted that these wont turn out using other gluten free flour blends. If you use another flour blend besides the Bobs Red Mill or the King Arthur Flour all purpose baking mix blends I tested with, I cant guarantee the results.

Because roll out cookies are fairly temperamental , I recommend making these with the specific ingredients that we tested the recipe with for best results: the Bobs Red Mill one to one gluten free flour and the Country Crock plant butter sticks.

Body Detox, Gluten

Writing about ways to be healthy through what many consider alternative means is a little off the beaten path.

Sometimes my colleagues and I catch a little flack for suggesting that its possible to turn around health problems and avoid disease by doing something as radical as improving your diet.

So I have to admit I get a little excited when I see the kind of advice I share also appearing on those trendy magazine sites.

A colleague shared one recent article with me that appeared on Fast Company, a magazine site that I am probably not hip enough to subscribe to. But its nice to know I have something in common with them or at least one of their writers who shared her amazing experience when she gave up gluten, sugar, dairy and coffee

When I became vegetarian a year and a half ago, I had no trouble making the switch from eating meat. It was easy to fill in my diet with more dairy and grains in place of meat.

However, while stuck at home most of the time during the pandemic, I noticed that Id been comfort eating quite a bit of cheese, bread, and ice cream, and it was making me feel bloated and sluggish.

With all the extra time on my hands, I have been thinking more about my health, and wondered if I could try a new diet that might improve my overall wellbeing.

What Are The Benefits Of Going Gluten And Dairy Free

The true benefits of a gluten-free diet are applicable to those with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease as removing gluten may result in improved nutrient absorption, reduced inflammation, reduced bloating and flatulence, improved energy levels, metabolism and weight regulation for these individuals.

How To Know If You Have Issues With Gluten

Speaking of test results, how can you determine if you have issues with gluten whether its intolerance or just sensitivity? Blood tests can be used to diagnose celiac disease that indicates gluten intolerance. These tests either look for antibodies or antigens in your blood. If these blood tests come back positive for celiac disease, your doctor will likely order an endoscopy to verify the results and check for damages.

Unfortunately, youre not able to test for gluten sensitivity. However, there are questionnaires that you can take that can help you determine if you do indeed have a gluten sensitivity.

You Could Feel Less Bloated

“When people inquire about giving up dairy, it’s usually because they’re feeling bloated,” says Gans, adding that the culprit is almost always lactose intolerance. People with this condition can experience bloating and gas, plus severe stomach pain, diarrhea, and cramps when they consume dairy products. The reason: lactose intolerant folks don’t produce enough lactase, an enzyme that’s important for breaking down a type of sugar called lactase found in milk products.

However, “not everybody with lactose intolerance needs to 100% remove dairy from their diet,” Gans says. Cutting back on your overall intake, or consuming dairy products along with other foods may be enough to ease symptoms.

If you have a condition that damages the digestive tract, such as Crohn’s disease or celiac disease, you may also get relief from inflammatory bowel disease like symptoms when you cut back on dairy.

Don’t Forget To Exercise

This could be the most important tip of all.

Cutting the wheat and the gluten may help you lose weight more easily, but if you really want to accelerate your efforts, you’re going to need to break a sweat.

Exercise can help you build more muscle and lose fat, and muscle burns more calories, helping you lose even more fat. Don’t view your new gluten-free diet as a replacement for hitting the gymmake time for some healthy physical activities.

Gluten intolerance can cause so much damage to your small intestine that the organ stops producing lactase, the enzyme that helps with milk digestion.

what happens when you cut out dairy? So when dairy is cut out, bloating can decrease. “This is due to the fact that many people lack lactase, the enzyme needed to properly digest cow’s milk,” nutritionist Frida Harju-Westman explained to Cosmopolitan. “If you cut out dairy, you may find that your digestion improves, perhaps making you feel less bloated.”

Consequently, can you lose weight by cutting out dairy and gluten?

Naturally, when you cut gluten, you cut a lot of carbs. With the decrease in carbs comes an increase in high fibre and nutrient dense vegetables and satiating healthy fats and proteins. Ergo, the empty kilojoules are eliminated, and you feel fuller for longer

The Benefits Of Going Gluten

What do you do when a health issue arises? At first sign, most people immediately turn to medications, prescription strength pills, or over the counter remedies. Have a headache? Take an Advil. Upset stomach? Just pop a Tums. However, food can be a very powerful tool for healing your body and preventing issues from starting in the first place.

Certified personal trainer Emily Schromm suffered from gut and skin issues for years. Once she eliminated gluten and dairy from her diet, everything went away- without having to turn to drugs or medication. Even if you havent previously dealt with any allergies or food sensitivities, it is possible to develop reactions to certain types of foods, such as gluten or dairy, after being able to handle it for years.

Managing Lactose Intolerance And Celiac Disease

Since celiac disease is the primary cause of lactose intolerance, thereâs only one possible solution: switching to that gluten-free diet mentioned earlier. The above-mentioned digestive problems normally go away once you get rid of gluten from your diet now, your damaged small intestines can heal.

Itâs not all rosy, unfortunately some people do continue experiencing symptoms of lactose intolerance for months if not years after going 100% gluten-free. It all depends on the extent of the damage and how long it takes for the damaged villi and brush border to grow back. Just be assured that by making the gluten-free step, you will improve gradually.

In a lot of cases, lactose intolerance disappears completely after 6-12 months, while in some cases the villi and microvilli might take up two years to fully heal.

Itâs worth mentioning that most adults also become lactose intolerant because they are genetically predisposed to develop a lactase deficiency. The vast majority of lactose intolerance cases in people aged 20-plus are inherited and chronic, if not lifelong.

On the other hand, lactose intolerance caused by celiac disease can occur at any time when the villi and microvilli are too damaged to digest lactose. This form is also temporary, going away following a gluten-free treatment.

Similarly, in children, some cases of lactose intolerance can be caused by gastrointestinal tract infections, and not always because of celiac disease.

If I Did It What Could I Eat

A gluten-free diet excludes gluten , which is found in wheat, barley, and rye. Other sources of gluten include triticale, malt, and brewers yeast. This excludes wheat-based bread and pasta, most cereals, many packaged snack foods, soy sauce, beer, and other foods.

Thankfully, there are gluten-free options to enjoy for everything from pasta to cookies. However, the bulk of your diet whether youre eating gluten-free or notshould consist of veggies, high-quality protein, and healthy fats, says Presicci.

There are still plenty of naturally gluten-free options to choose from, despite the fact that many people turn to overly processed and packaged alternatives,” adds Jones. “For starches, potatoes of any kind, corn, rice, quinoa, amaranth, sorghum, millet and more are gluten free options that can be used at any meal.”

As far as a dairy-free diet, that means avoiding all sources of dairy including cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, kefir, yogurt, and milk. There are lots of dairy-free substitutes these days, but always check ingredients, since sometimes these subs include a long list of less-than-stellar ingredients and sugar.

Soy milk is the most effective dairy milk alternative due to its protein and nutrient content, but if someone also has a soy allergy, pea protein infused non-dairy milk alternatives as well as some oat milks can provide protein as well, says Jones.

Why Restrict These Three Food Types

Gluten: Harvard reported that up to 1% of the population has celiac disease, which includes an immune response reaction to consuming gluten-containing foods that is difficult to diagnose.

Sometimes it is a matter of process of elimination in your diet, or removing certain foods from your diet to see if you start to feel better. While you will find that many restaurants and grocery stores offer gluten-free options, it wasnt always that way.

Following a gluten-free diet can prevent inflammation and intestinal tract damage, as well as clear up brain fog.

Dairy: Whether dairy products are good or bad for you is a controversial topic in the healthcare field. Lactose intolerance affects about 75% of adults and causes symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, it can go undiagnosed without ever realizing you have an intolerance. While dairy products like milk can be healthy for you with calcium, vitamins, and minerals, it has been proven that it can lead to a higher risk of cancer in those who are lactose intolerant and continue to drink it.

Sugar: Experts have found that sugar can be as addictive as drugs like cocaine. When we consume sugar, it activates neurons in the brain that trigger opioids and dopamine to be released in our bodies.

After making these dietary changes, I noticed great results in only three months. Heres what happened to my health.

How To Cut Out Caffeine Dairy Gluten And Sugar

Many people with food-related allergies or food sensitivities must learn how to eliminate specific substances from their diets. Caffeine, sugar, gluten and dairy are all associated with sensitivities that may cause adverse physical reactions. In addition, holistic health practitioners advise strict dietary protocols eliminating these substances to treat a wide variety of health conditions such as arthritis, celiac disease and lupus. Some people also remove these substances from their diets temporarily in an effort to “detox” or “cleanse” their bodies. If you have a sensitivity to any of these substances, it is helpful to know how to eliminate them from your daily food selections and plan a healthy diet.

Plan simple meals with lean proteins such as chicken, fish, turkey and egg whites. Low-carbohydrate vegetables, such as leafy greens, broccoli and asparagus, and fruit, such as apples, pears and citrus fruits, are excellent sources of fiber and nutrients. As you eliminate dairy products, eating plenty of leafy green vegetables will ensure that you have sufficient calcium. Avoid processed foods, which often contain gluten and added sugars, and choose caffeine-, dairy- and sugar-free beverages such as water, usweetened herbal teas or soy milk. Many desserts and baked goods containing chocolate, coco or cacao may contain caffeine and sugar, and should be avoided.
