How To Use Tostitos Chunky Habanero Salsa Review

Who doesnt love tortilla chips? Its the perfect non-gluten snack! Anyone who loves tortilla chips also swears by Tostitos for making the best tortilla chips and moreish dips, including Quesos.

People who follow a gluten free lifestyle love tortilla chips with Queso. But is Tostitos Queso safe for everyone?

Tostitos is a Frito-Lay brand. The companys site clarifies that the gluten status of Tostitos products isnt tested. While its Quesos are naturally gluten free, theyre not labeled so. But just because they arent tested doesnt mean theyre unsafe. Trying small amounts will help determine if theyre safe for you.

Frito-Lay also mentions that Tostitos does not contain wheat, barley, rye, or any gluten-rich derivatives. Frito-Lay followers vouch that its products always mark allergens and gluten ingredients. Since Tostitos Quesos dont mark gluten among ingredients or allergens, they are naturally gluten free.

But these products, including the Tostitos Queso dipping sauces, may share manufacturing facilities with products that contain gluten-containing ingredients. Even though the facilities are appropriately cleaned, theres a possibility of cross-contamination. So you must first check how your body reacts to Quesos.

Gluten Free Salsa The Ultimate Guide

Last updated on by Adam Bryan. This post may contain affiliate links.

Did you know that salsa has recently surpassed ketchup as the number one condiment in the U.S.?

Crazy, right?

And the best part about that news is that most salsa brands and variations are gluten free!

Whether if you prefer mild, medium, chunky, extra hot, etc, youll be sure to find delicious gluten free salsas.

The issue that may be of concern is the fact that some salsas contain vinegar which may have been distilled by glutenous grains.

So well be sure to let you know if any salsas do.

What Is Tostitos Queso

Queso is the Spanish word for cheese and although it is made primarily of cheese, thats not all it features. The dish became well known throughout Texas, where it was invented, and is actually short for chile con queso which means chile with cheese.

In the traditional Tex-Mex recipes, queso dip is made with a block of Velveeta cheese, Ro-Tel diced tomatoes, and green chiles. Today, queso can be made with different cheeses and chiles like green chiles or jalapenos.

While traditional chile con queso recipes are naturally gluten free, this is not always the case. Because this dish can be created with so many different options, you may find that the queso dip youre eating isnt gluten free. Be sure to always check the labels or ask the chef for the ingredient list.

Naturally Gluten Free Ingredients Of Tostitos Queso

Tostitos offers two delicious varieties of Queso dipping sauces, the Queso Blanco Dip and the Salsa Con Queso. The Queso Blanco Dip is a medium-spicy dip with jalapenos and red bell peppers. The Salsa Con Queso also contains fresh tomatoes for a bit of tang. Take a look at the ingredients of the cheese dips.

Queso Blanco Dip contains Monterey jack cheese and cheddar cheese as the base and whey and buttermilk. Modified corn starch and maltodextrin are used as texturizers in the sauce. Both of these are free from gluten. It also contains other flavor enhancers like MSG, added flavors, Datem, and many more.

All the other ingredients like yeast extract, flavors, citric acid, acetic acid, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, sodium phosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, canola oil, sunflower oil, sugar, and salt are all naturally gluten free. So are jalapenos, red peppers, and milk protein concentrate used in the sauce.

The Salsa Con Queso contains most of these ingredients, with a few changes and alternatives. For instance, it has tomatoes and no cheddar cheese. It also has spices and soy lecithin. So this Queso sauce, too, is naturally gluten free. But they are not the ideal sauces for you if youre allergic to soy or dairy.

But once again

Everything that goes into both these dips is naturally gluten-free by general standards.

Note, all the standards and claims by Frito-Lay can differ based on the country.

What Are Tortilla Chips Made Of

Tortilla chips in their most simple form are made from corn tortillas, cut into triangles, circles, or strips, then fried in oil or baked.

Corn tortillas are made out of corn kernels, a limewater-cured maize which allows the skin of the corn kernels to come off. This corn is ground, other ingredients are added, then rolled into a ball. Then it is flattened and cooked.

Corn tortillas can be made using traditionally yellow corn white corn or even blue corn.

Some tortilla chip brands may use additional ingredients in their chips to make them a little different than the standard corn tortilla chips youre used to.

For example, you can find ingredients like chickpea, cassava, amaranth, teff, lentil, coconut, and sweet potato flour in some tortilla chips.

All of these ingredients are gluten-free, but that doesnt mean that all flavors and varieties of tortilla chips are.

Flavored tortilla chips, meaning any chips with anything other than corn, oil, and salt in them will need a second look at the ingredients to ensure there isnt any hidden gluten in the product.
