We covered some of this previously, in an article about gluten-free alcoholic beverages. But, that was prior to the FDA’s declaration that all distilled alcohol is gluten-free.

Overview Of Alcohol Labelling:
Added allergens, gluten sources and sulphites must be declared when present in alcoholic beverages. This requirement applies to bourbon whisky, as well as standardized and unstandardized alcoholic beverages. Beer is no longer exempt from declaring food allergens, gluten sources and added sulphites.
Manufacturers must state the presence of gluten in one of two ways on the product label. It can be declared within the ingredient list if an ingredient list is provided, or, if no ingredient list is provided, it must be stated within a Contains statement.
Standardized alcoholic beverages includes whisky, rum, gin, brandy, liqueurs and spirituous cordials, vodka, tequila, mezcal, wine, icewine, cider and beer. These standardized alcoholic beverages are not required to show a list of ingredients on the label unless they contain food allergens, gluten sources or added sulphites.
Unstandardized alcoholic beverages: may be labelled as alcoholic beverages, coolers, malt-based alcoholic beverages or other such names. Unstandardized alcoholic beverages are required to display a list of ingredients and must, like all other prepackaged foods, clearly identify the presence of any food allergen source, gluten source and added sulphites on the product label.
Is Wine Gluten Free
Yes, all wine is gluten free!
Most wine tends to be gluten free from an ingredients perspective. The only time wine may be suspect to glutenous ingredients or cross contamination is from the wheat paste/sealant used in wine barrels.
This sealant sometimes tend to leak into the wine thus cross contaminating the wine.
However, most wineries are starting to remove this paste from their barrels.
So if you do have any questions about whether or not a wine contains gluten, its advised to contact the winery directly to see if their wines or barrels contain any wheat or glutenous ingredients.

The Canadian Celiac Association has posted important information regarding Canadian legislation and labelling changes.
As a celiac, you have to be careful about the beverages you consume. But that doesnt mean that you cant have an alcoholic beverage if you choose to. Alcohol is allowed in the celiac diet, as long as you choose the right types of alcohol.
Beer and ale are usually made from barley, and are not safe for celiacs to drink. Wines, which are made from grapes, are safe for people with celiac disease. This includes fortified wines, like sherry and port.

- Gluten-reduced beers made with barley malt may NOT be labeled gluten-free. Gluten reduced beers should be avoided by those following a gluten-free diet.
- The TTB will allow this statement on product labels and in advertising: Processed to remove gluten for products made with wheat, barley, rye, or crossbred varieties of these grains OR any ingredients derived from these grains IF these grains or ingredients have been processed to remove all or some of the gluten.
- Fermented products must also include the following statement, Product fermented from grains containing gluten and processed to remove gluten. The gluten content of this product cannot be verified, and this product may contain gluten.
- Due to testing issues, it is not known whether gluten-removed beers are safe to drink. Until more is known, they should be avoided.

Is Beer Gluten Free
The popular beer brands you know and love are not gluten free. This includes the likes of Budweiser/Bud Light, Miller, Coors, Blue Moon, Stella Artois, Corona, and Michelob just to name a few.
However, there are quite a few specialty breweries that excel in creating naturally gluten free, gluten reduced, and gluten removed beers.
Popular gluten free options include Redbridge , Bards Gold Lager, and Glutenberg.
Just be sure to watch out for gluten removed beers which are made with gluten containing ingredients but have them removed through distillation. Unfortunately, this process is not 100% perfect resulting in U.S. retailers not being allowed to sell/market these particular beers as gluten free.

All About Gluten Free Beers
Beer used to never be gluten free. Luckily, many craft brewers and even big breweries like Anheuser-Busch are now offering special gluten free beer. Most are brewed from alternative grains like sorghum and millet, so are considered naturally gluten free beers.
There is another category of beer that is called gluten-removed or gluten-reduced these beers are made from barley in the traditional brew-making style, and are not allowed to be labeled as gluten-free in the U.S., although local state laws may differ when the beers are not crossing state lines.
Experts caution against celiacs and those with gluten sensitivity drinking these beers, since its unclear whether they are truly gluten freeenough to be safe.
