Understanding Automated Teller Machines

Gluten and Soy Free ‘Soy’ Sauce

The first ATM appeared at a branch of Barclays Bank in London in 1967, though there are reports of a cash dispenser in use in Japan in the mid-1960s. The interbank communications networks that allowed a consumer to use one banks card at another banks ATM came later, in the 1970s.

Within a few years, ATMs had spread around the globe, securing a presence in every major country. They now can be found even in tiny island nations such as Kiribati and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Can I Substitute Soy Sauce For Tamari

Yes, you can substitute soy sauce for Tamari. The striking differences in the flavor and color of the two sauces allow us to use them interchangeably in most recipes. However, there are a number of things that distinguish one sauce from the other.

Both the sauces are the result of soybean fermentation but the difference is the amount of wheat. Unlike soy sauce, which has a significant amount of wheat, Tamari can be regarded as gluten-free because It practically has little to no wheat in it. However, check the label before buying If you are gluten-insensitive.

The raw material for Tamari sauce is miso paste and It is specifically a Japanese soy sauce. While regular soy sauce is mostly consumed in Asia. tamari has a rich flavor, a deeper color, lesser saltiness, or a milder taste as compared to the regular Chinese soy sauce.

First Atm Opens For Business

On September 2, 1969, Americas first automatic teller machine makes its public debut, dispensing cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville Centre, New York. ATMs went on to revolutionize the banking industry, eliminating the need to visit a bank to conduct basic financial transactions. By the 1980s, these money machines had become widely popular and handled many of the functions previously performed by human tellers, such as check deposits and money transfers between accounts. Today, ATMs are as indispensable to most people as cell phones and e-mail.

Several inventors worked on early versions of a cash-dispensing machine, and some existed as early as 1967 in other countries. Don Wetzel, an executive at Docutel, a Dallas company that developed automated baggage-handling equipment, is generally credited as coming up with the idea for the modern ATM. Wetzel reportedly conceived of the concept while waiting on line at a bank. The ATM that debuted in New York in 1969 was only able to give out cash, but in 1971, an ATM that could handle multiple functions, including providing customers account balances, was introduced.

ATMs eventually expanded beyond the confines of banks and today can be found everywhere from gas stations to convenience stores to cruise ships. There is even an ATM at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Non-banks lease the machines or own them outright.

How Is Soy Sauce Made

Kikkoman® Gluten

Soy sauce production will of course vary with the manufacturer. There are also regional differences in the production. Soy sauce is used in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and other cuisines, each with their own unique style and flavor. The process begins with soybeans. Soybeans are highly nutritional legumes which are low in starch and rich in calcium and magnesium.

Soy sauce can be produced quickly through a non-brewed method or through fermentation. Low quality brands often use the non-brewed method which only takes a couple of days. The latter method is the traditional way this ancient condiment has been prepared. Fermentation can take several months or more to prepare. Salt, water, and wheat are used to create the unique flavor of soy sauce. Since wheat is often a part of the mash, generally soy sauce is not gluten free.

Bacteria are added to break down the proteins. This process produces several amino acids which are the building blocks of protein. The mash will ferment for a certain period of time. It is then filtered and pasteurized.

Why Is There Wheat In Soy Sauce

Now that we know there can be gluten in soy sauce, why is it there? According to San-J, an 8-generation soy sauce brewing company, adding wheat to soy sauce was originally a Japanese tradition that many Chinese soy sauces have adopted. This is why today, most soy sauce is brewed with wheat.

Typically, these soy sauces have a 50/50 ratio of soy and wheat. This provides a slightly sweeter flavor than more soy-based soy sauces like Tamari.

Speaking of Tamari, often Tamari will be a safer option than soy sauce because its a mostly soy-based sauce. But when shopping for Tamari, stay vigilant. Tamari can be made with small amounts of wheat too.

The Biggest Differences Between Tamari Vs Soy Sauce

Kikkoman Gluten Free Tamari Soy Sauce, 10 Oz (Pack of 6) Shop Gourmet

While you can usually swap tamari for soy sauce and vice versa in an easy and even exchange, there are a couple of things to be mindful of. Specifically, the differences in saltiness and consistency.

Tamari will be thicker and less salty. Therefore, if you are using soy sauce in place of tamari consider leaving out any additional salt that the recipe calls for. You may also choose to use less soy sauce than the recipe calls for and add more as needed.

Going the other direction, replacing soy sauce with tamari, you may want to add an extra pinch of salt.

Regarding consistency, the only place you will really notice this is in a dipping sauce, marinade, or dressing. Most of the time this will not matter. You will simply have a thinner dipping sauce if you use soy sauce or a thicker one if you use tamari.

How Can I Tell If My Soy Sauce Contains Gluten

The best way to know if your soy sauce has gluten is to check the ingredients list. If you see that your soy sauce contains wheat and gluten, you should not consume it.

Most companies will state whether their products contain wheat. But you can often tell by the color of the soy sauce. For instance, tamari soy sauces are typically darker whereas wheat in traditional soy sauces makes them look lighter.

Additionally, you can tell based on the taste of the soy sauce. Tamari soy sauces have a deep umami flavor while regular soy sauce has a sweeter flavor.

What Foods Contain Gluten

Thanks to its glue-like binding abilities, gluten is used in bread dough to make it more elastic and allow the bread to rise as it bakes. By holding the dough together, gluten helps the loaf maintain its shape. Gluten is also what gives bread the chewy texture that makes it so satisfying and delicious.

Because gluten is so useful for forming dough and binding foods together, it can be found in many varieties of food. Oftentimes, gluten is even in unexpected foods like some types of candies and chips. Carefully reading food labels will help you identify whether a food contains gluten so that you can avoid it if necessary.

While gluten can sneak into many foods, there are three main sources of gluten wheat, barley and rye. Paying attention to foods made with these grains is the easiest way to be aware of whether or not a food contains gluten.

These are foods that typically contain wheat:

  • Roux, a flour-based mixture used to thicken sauces
  • Salad dressings

As a popular grain for sweetening foods and beverages, barley is most often found in these products:

  • Malt, such as malted milk and milkshakes or malted barley flour
  • Food coloring

Rye is not quite as common as wheat or barley. There are usually only a few foods that contain rye:

  • Rye breads, such as pumpernickel
  • Some cereals

Whats The Problem With Gluten

While most people can eat gluten without suffering any negative side effects, up to 6% of the population may experience a sensitivity to gluten. Even for some people without a diagnosis specific to gluten sensitivity, consuming gluten can sometimes cause symptoms by aggravating other health conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome .

Despite the phrase gluten sensitivity, gliadin is actually the cause behind most of the adverse health effects eating gluten can have on some people, not gluten itself. The peptide sequences found in gliadin can disrupt the gastrointestinal tract and cause extreme discomfort because they are highly resistant to the digestive process.

A sensitivity to gluten can take on a variety of different forms and cause a range of symptoms. The health condition most commonly associated with gluten sensitivity is celiac disease. Celiac disease, also known as coeliac disease, is the most severe type of gluten intolerance that affects about one out of every 133 Americans, or 1% of the population.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body views gluten as a foreign invader and signals for the immune system to attack the gluten. When attacking the gluten as a foreign invader, the body also attacks the lining of the gut, which can severely damage the gut wall and lead to digestive issues, nutrient deficiencies, anemia and an increased risk of developing diseases.

Most often, celiac disease causes these symptoms:
