    The secret to maintaining fresh-tasting cookies is to keep them away from air and moisture. That means waiting until your cookies are completely cooled before storing them and then keeping them in an airtight container.

    You can use an airtight cookie jar or other food storage container if you have it. But in a pinch, throwing cookies in a ziptop bag also works.

    If youre giving away the cookies, put them in a ziptop bag and then place that bag inside of a decorative plastic airtight container for a more finished presentation.

    If you need to store your cookies for longer than a few days, you can pop them into the freezer. When youre ready to eat, just snack straight from the container or let your cookies sit on the counter for a few minutes to defrost.

    • Jam Thumbprints Roll sugar cookie dough into 1 inch balls and place on parchment paper lined baking sheets. Use thumb to make a well in center of each ball. Fill with small spoonful of jam and bake for 10-11 minutes.
    • Fruit Cookie Pizza Press dough onto a pizza pan lined with parchment paper. Bake 13-15 minutes and cool completely. Frost with cream cheese icing and decorate with fresh fruit.
    • Peanut Butter Cookie Cups Roll dough into 1 inch balls and place in mini muffin tins with liners. Press in a miniature Reese Peanut Butter Cup and bake 9-11 minutes.

    Roll And Bake The Cookies

    • Divide the dough into two flattened balls and wrap each ball tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to 2 days.

    • Preheat the oven to 350F. Line 2 baking sheets with silicone baking mats or parchment paper.

    • If you want to make drop cookies, you can refrigerate or freeze the cookie dough then let it come to room temperature before scooping and baking.

    Can I Freeze Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

    Yes! Both the dough and baked gluten free sugar cookies freeze beautifully.

    • To freeze the dough: Divide the dough in half then wrap each half tightly in plastic wrap. Place inside a Ziplock freezer bag then freeze. Thaw the dough in the refrigerator overnight then bake per recipe instructions.
    • To freeze the baked cookies: Cool cookies completely then layer in a Ziplock freezer bag and freeze. Eat or frost directly from the freezer they thaw quickly.

    This gluten free sugar cookie recipe is made using a mix of gluten free flour and a few other simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry .

    How To Make Gluten

    This is the type of sugar cookie dough that holds well if you want to cut it out with cookie cutters. It also bakes well and doesnt fall apart -as it often happens with gluten-free recipes, plus it tastes amazing!

    Oh, did I mention that they have that classic sugar cookie texture that we all love! Crisp and solid on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside! These are definitely a winner!

    Buttercream Frosting For Easy Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

    This frosting recipe is super thick, and unlike what I would generally use to frost cupcakes. Its very stable because we add a touch of meringue powder to the mixture.

    Like Lofthouse cookies, these gluten free cut out sugar cookies can travel. If you dont have meringue powder, you can leave it out, and the frosting will be softer.

    Ingredients Needed To Make Gluten

    It only requires 7 very basic ingredients to make this gluten-free sugar cookie dough. Seven. Sure we could have been fussy and blended flours and starches to get the same end result, but that would have overcomplicated the process of making the dough. Which in my opinion, making cookie dough for a project like this should be easy because all the effort can then go into decorating.

    Gluten-free all-purpose flour:

    I like King Arthur Flour, Gluten-Free Measure for Measure flour for this particular recipe. I don’t typically call out flour brands in our recipes, but here I felt it was appropriate. The whole point of these sugar cookies is to be delicious, yes. But to also be sturdy enough to hold up to being rolled, punched into shapes, baked without spreading, and then iced. It’s a tall order for any gluten-free cookie recipe – but this recipe coupled with King Arthur Flour, Gluten-Free Measure for Measure flour has never let me down.

    Baking powder

    Most bakers make sure to stay stocked with baking powder during the holidays, however, if you do happen to find yourself in a pinch and you don’t have any baking powder. Here is how to make baking powder at home:

    Combine ½ cup cream of tartar and 4 tablespoons baking soda in a sifter.

    Sift together into a large bowl. Repeat the sifting process 4 times.

    Your homemade baking powder is ready to use and can be stored in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

    Salt

    ½ teaspoon coarse kosher salt is equal to ¼ teaspoon fine grain salt.

    Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

    Traditional sugar cookies are typically made by combining butter, sugar, eggs, and flour into a moldable dough, then baking.

    Our version uses a similar method but with slightly different ingredients. We combine dairy-free butter with organic cane sugar, vanilla, baking powder, and one room-temperature egg.

    For the flour, we went with:

    • almond flour for a crumbly, light texture
    • arrowroot starch for a bit of structure
    • potato starch for light, pillowy fluffiness

    This dough does best chilled. Once properly chilled, it can either be scooped out, rolled into balls, and pressed into discs, or rolled out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out into shapes of choice.

    Either way you go, these cookies are delicious. But we happen to prefer the roll-and-cut-out method for a festive effect.

    Once cut out, its a quick 8-10 minute bake in a 350 degree F oven on a lined baking sheet.

    Youre looking for a slightly puffed-up cookie with no visible brown edges . Once done baking, theyll continue to firm up slightly on the baking sheet. This is one of the secrets to fluffy, tender, perfect sugar cookies every time.

    How To Store Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

    These gluten free sugar cookies are even softer the next day!

    After frosting them, seal in an airtight container or ziploc bag.

    The extra moisture from the frosting softens any crunchy edges and you have the perfect gluten free soft frosted sugar cookies.

    I still love eating my gluten free soft sugar cookies freshly frosted, but I think they are even better on day 2 or 3. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days, or in the fridge for up to a week.

    If you want to freeze them, or prep them ahead of time, I recommend frosting them and then freezing them.

    Frosted gluten free sugar cookies will stay fresh in the freezer for up to a month!

    Gluten Free Sugar Cookie Recipe

    Reminder:When measuring out flours, make sure not to scoop your measuring cup into the bag. This will result in too much flour! Instead, pour or spoon the flour into your measuring cup and level off with the back edge of a knife. Whenever possible, measure out your flours by weight. This is the most accurate method.

    How To Make Sugar Cookies Without A Rolling Pin

    Here is my lazy no-roll method for making sugar cookies with this recipe:

    • Drop the dough onto prepared baking sheet using a 1 ½ tablespoon cookie scoop.
    • Dip the bottom of a drinking glass in white sugar and gently press the gluten free sugar cookie out so it is about 3 inches across.
    • Bake as directed.

    The extra sugar adds a pleasant crunch! If you were to use colored sugar no added decorations would be needed.

    If you want the ultimate lazy gluten free chewy sugar cookie, they are even easier.

    Easy, Gluten Free Sugar Cookie Recipe

    There are no nut products in my gluten free sugar cookie recipe, so if you have an allergy, these treats are safe to enjoy.

    If you deviate from my recipe by using a different flour blend or other ingredients, be sure to check product packaging and ingredients lists to be sure the substitutions are also nut free.

    Five Things To Know About Making Gluten

  • Dont overbeat the butter. For this recipe, simply mix the butter and sugar until its thick, not fluffy. If it gets overmixed, the cookies can spread.
  • Chill the Dough. Unlike chocolate chip cookies or gluten-free sparkly cookies, cut out cookie dough needs to chill before baking. This prevents the cookies from spreading as they bake. Allow at least 45 minutes for chilling.
  • The best thickness is 1/4 inch. This is the sweet spot for sugar cookies.
  • You can re-roll the dough! Since theres no gluten in the dough, you can reroll it many times. It wont get tough! It can, however, get warm. If the dough starts to get soft, pop it in the fridge for a few minutes before re-rolling.
  • Bake until the edges are light brown. These cookies remain rather pale. Look for the edges to turn a very light brown, at this point, the cookies are usually done.
  • How To Make Gluten Free Sugar Cookies

  • Add shortening, sugar, vanilla and egg to a large mixing bowl.
  • Using an electric mixer, mix until combined.
  • Stir in the milk.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt and xanthan gum.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix.
  • Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
  • Roll dough into 1½-inch balls, or use a rounded tablespoon. Place the dough balls onto the cookie sheet two inches apart. Press each one down with the bottom of a cup until the cookie is round and approximately ½ inch thick.
  • Bake as directed. Cool and frost.

    Gluten Free Dairy Free Sugar Cookies

    There is butter in both the gluten free sugar cookie recipe and in the frosting recipe. I have successfully replaced the butter in the cookie dough with Melt brand vegan butter.

    The edges of the gf sugar cookies arent quite as blunt and clean as they are when you make the recipe exactly as written, but the recipe still turns out and tastes great.

    The butter in the frosting recipe can be replaced most effectively with Spectrum brand butter-flavored nonhydrogenated vegetable shortening. It has quite a lot less moisture than butter, though, so you might not need as much confectioners sugar to reach the proper consistency.

    For the milk in the frosting, you can use any unsweetened nondairy milk. My favorite is unsweetened almond milk, but nearly any will do here.
