If the biopsy comes back as negative and there are no histamine results to gluten from allergy testing, then a gluten intolerance will be confirmed.
Diagnosis: What To Expect
Since celiac disease tends to run in families, if you have a parent, child, brother, or sister with the disease, talk to your doctor about whether you should be tested. Celiac disease is more common in people with type 1 diabetes, autoimmune liver disease, thyroid disease, Down syndrome, Turner syndrome, or Williams syndrome. So if you have any of these conditions, you should also ask your doctor to test you for celiac.

There currently is no valid test available for gluten sensitivity /gluten intolerance. It is diagnosed by first doing validated testing for celiac disease and wheat allergy. If those tests are negative, and the person gets ill from consuming gluten, they are then gluten intolerant.
However, research has now shown that gluten sensitivity or gluten intolerance may actually not be due to gluten at all. People who think they are reacting to gluten, and dont have celiac, may actually be reacting to other components of wheat.
Current research blames FODMAP carbohydrates and ATI proteins as two potential causes of gluten sensitivity. Given these are not gluten per se, there is a discussion to change this entitys name to Non-celiac wheat sensitivity. Many doctors still consider celiac disease to be relatively rare , so if your doctor doesnt bring up the possibility of celiac disease, you need to speak up and be your own health advocate.

Currently, there are no recommended methods to test for non-celiac gluten sensitivity . Some doctors offer saliva, blood or stool testing. However, these tests have not been validated and are therefore not accepted.
