Environmental Hazards Of Gmo Foods
GMO corn harms aquatic insects
A 2007 published study by Indiana University environmental science professor found that GM corn produced increased mortality and reduced growth in caddisflies, aquatic insects that are a food resource for higher organisms like fish and amphibians.
GMO corn threatens native corn in Mexico
In a 2001 paper published in Nature magazine, University of California at Berkeley researchers Ignacio Chapela and David Quist described how genes from GM corn contaminated native corn varieties in Oaxaca, Mexico. The finding was particularly disturbing because contamination was found thousands of miles from plantings of GM corn and because it threatened the center of biological diversity for corn.

The widespread use of glyphosate herbicide used with herbicide tolerant GM corn, soybeans, canola, and cotton has led to the creation of herbicide resistant weeds infesting millions of acres of farmland throughout the United States.

What Are Genetically Modified Foods
In genetic modification or genetic engineering , scientists remove one or more genes from the DNA of another organism, such as a bacterium, virus, or animal, and recombine them into the DNA of the plant or animal that they want to alter. By adding these new genes, genetic engineers hope the plant will express the traits associated with the new genes. The first GMO food to be approved and grown for human consumption was the Flavr-Savr tomato where scientists inserted the DNA from a cold-water fish into a tomato plant in hopes of making the plant resistant to rotting and softening. In another example, genetic engineers transferred genes from a bacterium known as Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt into the DNA of corn. Bt genes express a protein that kills insects, and transferring the genes allows the corn to produce its own pesticide. It appears that genetically engineered salmon will be the first animal to be approved for human consumption.
What Foods Are Ok To Eat Not Organic
If youre not able to access organically grown produce for whatever reason, there are some things grown with traditionally fewer pesticides than others.
Eggplant, cabbage, cantaloupe, mangoes, mushrooms, onions, and sweet corns are just a few examples of foods that would be okay to eat if not organic.

What Do Fda Scientists Think
You will definitely find sources that say there is no evidence of potential risks for consuming GMO foods. However, usually, the people who say findings are incomplete and more research is needed are biotechnology companies that are commercializing plants with GMOs. In reality, FDA scientists had repeatedly warned that GM foods can create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems . The FDA wanted to warn people, but apparently, a person from Monsanto, the largest biotech company, got in the way. In fact, we are relying on them to tell us whether GMOs are safe for us. Seems a bit wrong dont you think?
There are a lot of reports showing the dangers of the Bt toxin added to corn.
A gene from bacteria called Bt is used in corn. It has many studies showing the possibilities of problems with immune health, gut health, fertility, and liver and kidney function effects. In mice, studies show the Bt toxin has considerably changed their immune function. Additionally, humans had allergic reactions from exposure to a Bt spray. Bt crops are supposedly a thousand times more concentrated. In India, farmworkers are having reactions from Bt cotton. Many animals such as cows, chickens, horses, buffalo, and sheep have become severely sick from consuming Bt products.

Do Organic Products Contain Gmo’s
The answer is No! According to the USDA blog, certified organic foods cannot contain any GMO’s. To know if they are certified USDA organic, look for the seal on the package. However, there is some dispute over how closely this is regulated. This article explains more.
I’ve always been a little skeptical on if I should buy all my produce organic or not. It can be pricy! Probably the only down fall in my book, momma is on a budget! Some say to buy food that you eat the outsides of.. apples, carrots, lettuce, etc. organic. And to buy regular things that you peel or eat the insides of.. such as bananas or melons. However, after what we learned today, organic means more then whether or not the food has had a few pesticides sprayed on it. Can eating altered DNA have any impact on our health? We may not know yet, but at least we can make educated decisions when buying our foods and consuming products. As for me and my tomatoes, I prefer garden fresh. If that isn’t possible, organic from the market is pretty darn close.

Avoid Foods That Contain Glyphosate Monsantos Toxic Herbicide This Includes Anything Not Certified Organic
A leading FDA-registered food safety testing laboratory has found extremely high levels of glyphosate in some of Americas most popular food products. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsantos Roundup, is the most heavily used chemical weedkiller in food and agricultural production in human history, as a result of the widespread adoption of genetically engineered crops now grown on more than 175 million acres in the US and over 440 million acres around the world.
New scientific evidence shows that probable harm to human health could begin at ultra-low levels of glyphosate, even 0.1 parts per billions . Sadly, many popular foods tested for glyphosate measured between 289.47 ppb up to 1,125.3 ppb!
The testing and analysis of 29 popular foods was performed by Anresco Laboratories, San Francisco, an FDA registered laboratory that has done expert food safety testing since 1943. The laboratory found that many well-known products showed high amounts of glyphosate. Original Cheerios, for example, measured 1,125.3 ppb. Other high levels of glyphosate were found in familiar products such as Oreos, Doritos, and Ritz Crackers. Glyphosate degrades in the soil into AMPA, aminomethylphosphonic acid, an endocrine disuptor found in foods and water. Here are a few of the test results:

Why Is It Important To Shop Organic
Since you cant be sure non-GMO foods are always organic, its a much safer bet to shop organic. Then you can be reasonably certain that most of your organic foods will also be free of GMOs as well. Look for the USDA Certified Organic label. Oils such as canola are linked to asthma, autoimmune disease, diabetes, obesity, infertility, memory problems i.e. Alzheimers disease, and more. Can Genetically Modified Foods Trigger Gluten Sensitivity
A new report links genetically modified organisms with gluten-related disorders and suggests GMOs might be an important environmental trigger for gluten sensitivity, estimated to affect as many as 18 million Americans.

The report, released by the Institute for Responsible Technology , cites U.S. Department of Agriculture data, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency records, medical journal reviews and international research. The authors say the data link GMOs to five conditions that either may trigger or exacerbate gluten-related disorders, including celiac disease, a serious autoimmune disorder:
- Intestinal permeability
- Immune activation and allergic response
- Impaired digestion
- Damage to the intestinal wall
Although wheat has been hybridized over the years, it is not a GMO, which can only be created by a laboratory process that inserts genetic material into plant DNA. Nine GMO food crops currently are being grown for commercial use: soy, corn, cotton , canola , sugar from sugar beets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya and alfalfa. In the U.S., GMOs are in as much as 80 percent of conventional processed food, says the Non-GMO Project.
Dr. Emily Linder offered support for the reports findings. When she removed GMOs as part of the treatment for her patients with gluten sensitivity, she finds her patients recover faster and more completely.
