How was your Mothers Day weekend? Did you do something extra special for the mom or dad or super special person in your life?

This past weekend, Erik and I did a nice facetime with my mom and the rest of the kiddosMonica, Penny and Jenny. We were just glad to see my mom, put on all the Bitmoji animal heads to make her laugh, and just reconnect about everything.

The Ultimate Banana Blueberry Smoothie For A Healthy Breakfast Treat

This banana blueberry smoothie is adapted from my Wild Blue Smoothie recipe in Go Dairy Free: The Ultimate Guide and Cookbook. I originally shared this popular recipe back in 2006, and it has become a family favorite. Here are a few quick notes and tips about this recipe:

Go Green Dont worry, you wont taste or see the spinach! Spinach is a great beginner green for smoothies. It provides extra vitamins and minerals, but its the most tender and mildly-flavored green. You wont detect it beneath the bold fruit flavors and the purple hue of the dark berries masks the green color.

Start Slow The reason I add half the milk beverage first is to ensure the spinach fully blends in. If you add too much liquid, the leaves tend to just spin around even with some high power blenders! But a thicker base allows even wimpy blenders to pulverize those greens.

Choose Your Consistency As is, this is a drinkable smoothie. I give the option to add ice for a thicker blend, like the one pictured. If you want a really thick shake, you can use a frozen banana. But you might need to add a little more liquid.

Sweeten Only as Needed The sweetness of this banana blueberry smoothie will depend on the sweetness of your fruit. Usually, Im able to omit the sweetener or add just a small pinch of pure stevia extract. I just recommend that you add the sweetener last to avoid adding more than you need. Sometimes its surprisingly sweet as is!

Breakfast Meal Replacement Smoothies Tips

1.If you add frozen fruit, ice or cold water to the smoothie, it will reduce the power of your digestion, try to use room temperature liquids.

2. Add about 1/2 cup of liquid, then add more if necessary choose from dairy-free milk, coconut water or plain water.

3. If you want your smoothie more sweet add organic raw honey or stevia.

What You Need To Make This Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • Fresh or frozen strawberries
  • Frozen bananas
  • Whatever milk is your favorite. I go with unsweetened plain almond milk but you can use regular, skim, 2%, whole, cashew, hemp, soy, etc.
  • Whatever plain yogurt you like. Yogurt adds extra thickness and creaminess, plus a little tang to balance the sweetness. I use a dairy-free coconut milk yogurt.

If you want to know how to thicken smoothies, use frozen bananas instead of ice. Ice will literally water down your smoothie. Frozen bananas add a perfectly thick, creamy texture as well as natural sweetness.

To freeze bananas, peel and chop into chunks. Place in an air-tight plastic baggie . Freeze for up to 6 months. Squish the bag a bit to break up the chunks before adding to the blender.

Equipment:

  • Blender I like to use a sturdy blender with a reliable ice-crushing feature, as that will help really blend in the frozen fruits.
  • A colander for rinsing the strawberries
  • A towel for drying the strawberries

Dairy Free Coffee Carob Smoothie

This decadent-tasting coffee-chocolate smoothie is sweetened with fruit and fig butter from Trader Joes. And I replaced cocoa powder for carob powder a great alternative to chocolate if you are allergic to it.

When everything is mixed you get a sweet smoothie that tastes like a mocha, but without any of the added fillers or syrups you would get from the coffee shop.

As extra heath boosters I used avocado and hemp milk to make the smoothie more nutrient-packed and filling.

  • Frozen fruit will make your smoothie be thicker and frostier.
  • A general rule of thumb is to stick to around 1 cup of fruit per smoothie serving.

    How To Make A Perfect Strawberry Banana Smoothie

    Making a perfect smoothie is all about getting the right ratio. Not so thick that you cant actually blend the smoothie, and not so thin that it drinks more like milk that tastes like fruit than a smoothie.

    The ratio should be just right for this easy smoothie recipe, but the nice thing about it is that its easy to adjust if youd like it a little thinner, or a little thicker.

    To make it thicker you can do 2 things:

  • Use a frozen banana instead of a fresh banana.
  • Add more frozen strawberries or a bit of ice and blend again until you reach your desired consistency!
  • To make it thinner all you have to do is add a bit more liquid until its thin enough for the perfect sip.

    But backing it up, lets go over the step-by-step of how to make this smoothie:

    • Starting with 1 ΒΌ cups dairy free milk, add all ingredients to a blender and blend on high until smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick to blend freely use your blenders tamper or add a little more milk at a time until desired consistency is reached.
    • If youd like your smoothie a little bit sweeter you can add a bit of honey or maple syrup to taste.
    • Divide between two glasses and enjoy!

    Strawberry Banana Smoothie Ingredients

    Okay so besides the fact that this smoothie is soooo delicious, its also pretty amazing because its made with just THREE ingredients! I dont think it gets much easier than that.

    And believe it or not these healthy smoothies are made without yogurt, without dairy, and without juice. WOO!

    So what do you need to make a strawberry banana smoothie?

    • A large banana I typically use a fresh banana, but if you want an even thicker smoothie, or if its all you have on hand you can absolutely use a frozen banana. I like my strawberry banana smoothie to be a bit more strawberry forward in flavor so this recipe only calls for 1 banana to make 2 smoothies. If you want more banana flavor you can add a second banana!
    • Frozen strawberries Frozen strawberries are what make this smoothie THICK. If you dont have any frozen strawberries you can substitute fresh in a pinch but youll want to add a handful of ice to your smoothie to cool it down and thicken it up.
    • Non dairy milk of choice Almond milk, oat milk, cashew milk, and hemp milk are all fantastic options. Remember the creamier the plant based milk the creamier your smoothie will be!

    And of course a blender! My Vitamix is my best friend in the kitchen but any powerful blender will work.

    Because this smoothie recipe is made with just 1 banana for two smoothies its not super duper sweet. If you prefer your smoothie sweeter you can either add a second banana or a bit of honey / maple syrup to sweeten it to taste!

    Kale Cocoa And Almond Butter

    Summer Stone Fruit Smoothie (gluten free and dairy free)

    This power smoothie is the perfect healthy snack to satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you full until dinner. Since kale is full of vitamins, youll also get plenty of essential nutrients.

    You need:

    • 1 cup almond or soy milk
    • 1 cup kale
    • 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 2 tbsp. almond butter
    • 1 banana, frozen in chunks

    The trick to avoiding kale chunks is to blend just the kale and soy milk until the combination is smooth, and then add the other ingredients.

    Tips For Cutting A Pineapple:

    I wanted to show you real quick how easy it is to chop an entire pineapple at home vs buying it pre-cut from the grocery store which sells it at a PREMIUM. Look for a pineapple thats more yellow than green, which indicates its ripe and sweet, then slice the top and bottom off.

    Next, cut the rind off in strips, going deeper than you think you should to get all the tough eyes off. That said, you can go back around after youre done to clean it up a bit.

    Slice the pineapple into quarters then place each quarter cut-side down and slice the core out on an angle. Slice into strips then chop. Thats it!

    Another note, I used chia seeds in this smoothie not only because they help thicken it up without having to use a banana but also because they are nutritional POWERHOUSES full of fiber, protein, calcium, and iron. I love adding them to Lincolns smoothies especially because he cant eat dairy and Im always looking for good calcium sources for him. Chia seeds are usually in the health market section of the grocery store.
