Which Graham Cracker Crust Is Better Baked Or No

The crust in the photo at the top of this post is the baked graham cracker crust. Its very stable, even at warm room temperature, although a no-bake graham cracker crust is most stable when chilled.

I like having the option of using a baked graham cracker crust in desserts that need some extra stability from the crust. Thats often the case with no-bake recipes like our smores pies, but it can come in handy when youre making something quite small, like our cheesecake cookie cups.

A no-bake graham cracker crust simply will not work in a standard miniature muffin tin . It will fall apart as you try to get each crust out of its well of the pan.

The smallest size well from which I have ever successfully removed an intact no bake cookie crust is 6 well cake panel pan from USA Pans . And even then, youll need to add an unbleached parchment paper sling to the bottomand dont chill the crusts too much or they will become brittle and crack when you try to remove them.

The best feature of the baked crust is its flexibility. Because its so stable, you can use it to make very small confections, and even lift it right out of a pie plate after its been baked and cooled.

Then, fill the crust with something warm or cold. Just be sure not to overbake the baked crust and it will cut easily with a fork when you serve it.

What Gluten Free Baking Blend Is Best

    Gluten Free Chocolate Graham Crackers

Everyone has their own preferences for gluten free flours, but I like to use Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Baking Blend. I have really excellent results using this blend in my recipes, and I find that it replicates traditional all-purpose flour very well.

When working with gluten free flours, be sure to use a spoon to scoop the flour into your measuring cup, rather than scooping in to the bag with the cup. Scooping with give you too much flour, and your dough will be thick and dry.

    How To Make Gluten

These 1-bowl graham crackers start with whisking together everything but the flours and ground flaxseeds.

We keep them naturally sweetened with maple syrup and coconut sugar and include molasses and cinnamon for a more subtle sweetness and graham cracker flavor. Baking soda helps them rise, sea salt enhances all the flavors, and melted coconut oil makes them crunchy and snap-able just like the real thing!

Next we stir in the flours. We used mostly oat flour to keep them whole grain and wholesome! Arrowroot starch adds a little lightness and ground flax seeds add fiber and omega 3s.

After mixing the dough, we roll it out between two sheets of parchment paper to prevent sticking while preserving the beautiful color of these crackers.

Then we cut into small rectangles.

And poke twice with a fork for that classic graham cracker look.

Theyre cuties going into the oven, but even cuter coming out!

How To Make Graham Cracker Crust Dairy

    Gluten-Free Graham Crackers

If you also follow a dairy-free diet, you can make a gluten-free graham cracker crust without the dairy by swapping out butter for a vegan butter option or coconut oil.

My preference is to use vegan butter, because its closer in flavor to a traditional graham cracker crust, but you can use whatever fat choice that you like for this recipe.

    Are Graham Crackers Gluten

The main ingredient in graham crackers is usually flour, so many brands wont be gluten-free. But theres good news for those suffering from celiac disease or gluten sensitivities: There are many brands of gluten-free graham crackers at the grocery store!

Whether you want to make smores or dunk them in milk, this list will help you easily find where to buy gluten-free graham cracker brands! To help you find out where to buy a brand at a store, Ill list popular grocery stores that carry the brand and also link a product locator so you can be sure that you can buy it near you! If you can buy the brand online, Ill link to an online retailer in the buy online section!

For each of the GF graham crackers on this list, Ill clarify whether the brand is certified gluten-free or just labeled gluten-free. Certified gluten-free brands have to meet certain standards to prove that their products do not contain gluten. Brands that are just labeled gluten-free without a certification are usually safe to eat for people with gluten sensitivities however, those with celiac disease should consider staying away from these brands because of the possibility of cross-contamination.

If youre looking for a certain variety of store-bought gluten-free graham crackers like chocolate, vegan, or Kosher Ill list other certifications and varieties in the product description!

Do You Have To Make Your Own Graham Crackers

How to Make Gluten Free Graham Crackers

Im happy to answer this with one word: no. I always have a few emergency boxes of packaged gluten free graham crackers in my pantry. Simply put, there are times when I just dont have the time to make my own cookies and the rest of the dessert.

My gluten free son loves anything with a graham cracker crust, so I try to keep a batch of my homemade gluten free graham crackers around. They really do taste just like Nabisco, and Ill often make a double batch.

I keep one batch whole, wrap them tightly and freeze them. That allows me to make desserts like the decadent no-bake banana split or our no-bake chocolate eclair cake. The other batch I process into crumbs and keep in a sealed glass container on my counter. Either Ill make them into a crust, or sprinkle some over a smoothie bowl or yogurtif Im feeling generous.

Even though I rarely use the store-bought crackers, Im super grateful that there are now enough brands of gluten free graham crackers that its possible to buy them. My current favorite packaged gluten free graham cracker brand is Schar. Theyre not as good as homemade , but theyre great in a pinch!
