Puff Pastry Shells Gluten

One thing thats really fun about puff pastry is that it can make any meal go from mundane to fancy. And something that is always a hit at dinner parties is a vol-au-vent. Vols-au-vent are individual puff pastry shells that can be used to contain all sorts of foods for a fun presentation. I especially like these to serve chicken or shrimp salad, and for filling with fresh fruit and whipped cream for a simple yet pretty dessert.

Vol-au-vent means blown by the wind in French. The name refers to the lightness of the puff pastry after baking. These little guys are easy to makeand you can make them early in the day and then serve them for dinner. You can also shape them and then freeze before baking. You can then whip them out when you need them and bake them straight from the freezer.

Of course, you can just use them because theyre yummy and they look pretty. And, dont forget the dessert optionsyou can fill them with all sorts of things, like: pudding, fresh strawberries and whipped cream, ganache , sauteed apples w/cinnamon, etc.Individual Pastry Shells , Gluten-Free

What Is Puff Pastry

Puff pastry is a flaky light pastry made from laminated dough and butter. What that really means is that its alternating layers of butter and dough. High fat butter is needed to get a nice and flaky tart. The only ingredients used are water, flour, butter and salt. I love puff pastry recipes so much. Where Did Cheese Danishes Originate From

Gluten Free Puff Pastry

The start of of the Danish pastry is around 1850 in Denmark. Austrians helped Danish bakers by bringing along new baking traditions and pastry recipes. One such technique that was brought to Denmark was the Viennese lamination technique. Another fun fact is that Danish pastries are not really danish. These yummy delights are actually called Vienna bread.

What Is Gluten Free Rough Puff Pastry

Puff pastry is made by creating layers – this is called ‘laminating’ the pastry.

As it cooks, the butter between the layers of pastry melt, causing the pastry to puff up.

You may have seen this on Bake Off, with bakers talking about how they’re making a ‘rough puff’ instead of traditional puff pastry.

In short, ‘proper’ puff pastry is made when you place a flattened block of butter in the middle of the pastry and then fold it into the layers.

But rough puff pastry is a little easier and a little less technical.

You simply ensure there are lumps of butter throughout the pastry dough, so when you fold the layers, this marbles through the pastry.

This creates a gorgeously flaky pastry – the perfect kind for sausage rolls, apple turnovers, cheese straws and even Greggs-style steak bakes.

It’s also very easy to do and requires very little technical skill – if you have a rolling pin, you can do it!

Tip For Making Gluten Free Puff Pastry

Read through the printable recipe below. This recipe has a few steps that require time in between, for example, chill time.

Start with cold ingredients.

Don’t substitute anything that isn’t listed as a tested substitute. If you do, you’re doing so at your own risk.

Make sure your ingredients aren’t expired before you begin.

You can chill the dough in the refrigerator or freezer.

If the puff pastry dough cracks while you’re rolling it out, the dough is too cold.

If the puff pastry dough is sticky while you’re rolling it out, sprinkle rice flour over the surface.

If the puff pastry dough starts to soften or is hard to handle, place it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes.

What Type Of Cheese Is In A Chese Danish

Coles Gluten Free Pastry (MY 3 EASY TIPS TO MAKE FROZEN GLUTEN FREE PASTRY WORK!)

I used plain cream cheese for this recipe. The cream cheese goes so well with lemon, egg yolk and sugar. Cream cheese is fantastic to use with desserts because of its soft texture and mild flavor. Please remember to use real fat cream cheese. It really does make a difference-especially with desserts.

Ingredients In Gluten Free Puff Pastry Dough

I tested this gluten free puff pastry dough recipe with variations that included butter, egg, milk, and dried milk powder. The best results were found with a combination of ingredients that didn’t include egg or milk.

White rice flour

Water

This gluten free puff pastry dough is considered a rough pastry dough.

A rough pastry dough incorporates the butter by adding it into the dough in small pieces. A traditional puff pastry adds a solid layer of butter and folds it into the dough.

Why so much butter?

When the puff pastry dough bakes, it releases steam and the butter melts creating layers that puff up.

The butter is an important part of puff pastry and it’s hard to achieve layers of flaky dough without the butter.

What To Make With This Rough Puff

Gluten Free Puff Pastry (Pack 4) 740g

There are an endless amount of things we can make with this glorious gluten free puff pastry! Any recipe calling for traditional puff pastry in a cookbook or online will work with this gf puff pastry. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Cheese straws
  • Sausage rolls
  • Tarts
  • Palmiers

But WAIT! Theres more! I dont know about you, but I have a TON of recipes that call for canned crescent roll dough from my former life . I thought Id never be able to make them again, but nope. Thats not true. I CAN make them again!!! And theyre just as good, or even better, than what I remember them to be!

So if youre like me and you, too, have old recipes, youll need to play around with the amounts. One tube of Pillsbury Crescent Rolls is equal to 8 ounces, so all you need to do is weigh out 8 ounces . Roll the dough into a rectangle and cut triangles .

If your recipe calls for one large sheet of dough, no cutting will be necessary. Just roll it out and use it in your recipe as normal! You may need to adjust the temperature to a slightly higher temperature. If your recipe calls for a 350-degree oven, bake it at 400 degrees for the first 5 minutes, then drop it down to 350. That will give the pastry a chance to puff first before setting.

Get in the kitchen and make this right away! Youre gonna be amazed at how glorious it truly is!! ALL.THE.FLAKY.LAYERS

Using Your Gluten Free Puff Pastry

Once you’re ready to use your gluten free puff pastry, it’s pretty simple from here on!

To roll it out, remove it from the fridge and roll to the desired thickness dictated in the recipe.

If you have any offcuts, make sure you stack them neatly instead of scrunching them up.

This way you can re-roll the stacked-up pile out and use them for things like cheese straws!

If you scrunch them up you’ll lose all those layers and they won’t puff up anymore.

I’ll be gradually adding more gluten free puff pastry recipes to the blog now so do keep checking back for ideas on how to use your pastry.

For starters, why not use it to make my gluten free sausage rolls?
