How To Reduce Gluten Intake
While people with celiac disease must exclude gluten from their diet as soon as a doctor has diagnosed the condition, many people with gluten intolerance slowly reduce the consumption of gluten, rather than cutting it out straightaway.
It can help if a person starts by including one gluten-free meal per day before slowly adding more.
It may not be beneficial for everyone with gluten intolerance to cut gluten out of their diet entirely, as peoples symptoms will vary in their severity.
Some people may be able to consume small amounts of gluten without experiencing any symptoms.
The majority of people with gluten intolerance, however, may want to eliminate gluten from their diet gradually.
When Should I See My Doctor
It is very important to be properly diagnosed with coeliac disease by a doctor because it is a serious medical condition that affects people for their whole life.
If you think you may have coeliac disease don’t stop eating foods that contain gluten until after you have been diagnosed as stopping gluten means the tests are unreliable. If you have started a gluten free diet then you will need to resume a normal diet for at least 6 weeks before you are tested. You will also need to eat a minimum of 4 slices of wheat-based bread for adults, and 2 slices for children, every day during this time. This is called a gluten challenge and will help to make sure your test results are reliable.
Do You Have Any Signs Or Symptoms Of Gluten Intolerance
Remember that a gluten intolerance only affects a small percentage of people.
That means going gluten-free only has health benefits for a select few.
But you may be one of them if you frequently experience one or more of the above signs and symptoms.
Always speak with your doctor or dietitian first before making any major dietary changes.

Gluten sensitivity can show as IgG and/or IgA antibody responses to gluten, and gluten-containing grains. It may also show as anti-gliadin antibodies, but not always.
You can get your antibodies checked in a blood test done either by blood draw or with a finger poke. There are even ways that you can order this type of test online and do it at home to find out more.
I suggest checking for food sensitivities to other foods as well, because with gluten sensitivity, and the symptoms mentioned above, it is quite likely that you may also be reacting to such foods as dairy products, eggs, beans, and other grains.
Note that gluten sensitivity will NOT show with an intestinal biopsy. That is considered to be the standard way to diagnose Celiac disease, but does not show gluten sensitivity.
Once you know whether you have gluten sensitivity, the next step is to adjust your diet to ensure that you avoid gluten and enjoy continued good health. Id be happy to help you with that .

What Causes Wheat Intolerance
As we have seen in the study above, in those with NCGS, 47% of them have IBS. But are their symptoms caused by gluten or by the carbohydrate in wheat? I told you the waters are getting muddy!
- Those with IBS may have an intolerance to wheat, which is high in a certain carbohydrate known as a fructan, a type of FODMAP. A low-FODMAP diet restricts most foods containing wheat but not all.
- Interestingly, a recent study demonstrated that 60% of those with IBS had allergic-type reactions to wheat even though they did not test positive for an IgE allergy to wheat.
So as you can see, wheat can be problematic for many people for a variety of reasons. So before you embark on a gluten-free elimination diet, its very important to rule out Celiac disease . And of course, I recommend working with a skilled nutrition practitioner to help suss out whether your symptoms are related to a NCGS or a wheat intolerance or something else all together.

Wheat Allergy Vs Gluten Sensitivity
Wheat and gluten are present in many of the same foods, but they are not identical. Gluten is a protein that is present in wheatand also in the closely related grains barley and rye.
While wheat allergy involves IgE, gluten sensitivity does not involve this antibody. Gluten sensitivity occurs when gluten directly damages the small intestine in celiac disease or causes a non-IgE mediated reaction in non-celiac gluten sensitivity, gluten-induced dermatitis, or ataxia.
Learning To Live With Dairy Or Gluten Intolerance
Learning to live with dairy or gluten intolerance will mean living without foods that may have been integral to your diet. The good news is that there are many alternatives to your regular foods. Common alternatives to milk include soya based milk, nut based milks such as almond, hazelnut or cashew, hemp and coconut milk. There are also many alternatives to gluten, so it will be easy to create meals that are diverse and which you still want to eat. Foods such as rice, buckwheat, millet, polenta, quinoa or uncontaminated oats are all gluten free.

When To See A Doctor
You should see your doctor if you have any of the symptoms above when you eat foods containing gluten. This can be a sign of gluten intolerance or another serious problem like celiac disease or wheat allergy.
If you work with a doctor or registered dietician nutritionist to remove gluten from your diet but you still have symptoms or your symptoms get worse, you might have a condition other than gluten intolerance. If this happens, you should talk to your doctor or RDN, because you might need to change your diet or have additional testing done.
Whos At Risk For Celiac Disease
Is it people who a) have family members with the disease b) had a stressful event in their life c) already suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or d) any of the above? You probably dont think stress or RA are risk factors and probably picked A. However, they are indeed risk factors, so the correct answer is D.

How Gluten Sensitivity Is Diagnosed
Getting a gluten sensitivity diagnosis isn’t a straightforward process. Medical research lends support to the idea that non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a real condition, but there are healthcare providers who do not believe in its existence. Furthermore, there is no consensus on how to test for gluten sensitivity or what results of tests used by some when working toward a diagnosis actually mean.
Keep in mind that most healthcare providers recommend you undergo celiac disease testingfirst if you suspect you are reacting to gluten. However, if your celiac disease test results are negative, gluten sensitivity tests may provide you with evidence that your body is mounting a response to gluten.
How Do You Test For Gluten Intolerance
Your doctor might recommend trying a gluten-free diet to see if you do have a gluten intolerance. Keep in mind that other conditions, such as celiac disease and wheat allergies, can cause similar symptoms. If eliminating gluten from your diet eases your symptoms, this usually indicates gluten intolerance. Your doctor can test for wheat allergies or celiac disease if needed.

The best and really only known effective treatment for wheat or gluten allergies, gluten intolerance and celiac disease is to follow a strict gluten-free diet. This means removing all gluten containing grains and products made from these grains from your diet. In addition, you will need to start monitoring labels for gluten, as it is often used as a filler or binder in products such as barbecue sauces and vitamin supplements.
I also recommend integrating gluten-free enzymes, probiotic supplements and vitamin D into your diet. Testing For Gluten Intolerance
To test for an intolerance to gluten, schedule a doctors appointment to have comprehensive blood work done. This will be able to sense the gluten intolerance, if it exists.
If the blood test results are negative, yet symptoms are still occurring, remember that some people are sensitive to gluten without being completely intolerant.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity can cause a reaction from gluten that also results in similar unpleasant symptoms of the gastrointestinal system.
There is no test for non-celiac sensitivity to gluten. If it seems like this may be an issue, consider cutting out gluten for at least 21 days to see if symptoms improve.
This requires a complete lack of gluten in the diet, so it is important to check all labels and all ingredients in every food that is consumed.
Some hidden sources of gluten beyond wheat are rye, barley, bulgur, farro, matzo, oatmeal, seitan, malt vinegar, soy sauce, mayonnaise, and other common foods. It is important to do research before starting on a gluten free diet when looking to see if a sensitivity is present.
These are some symptoms that should be taken into consideration when celiac diseases is on the table. Be on the lookout for these symptoms before consulting a physician and having a blood test.

It seems to be a potential issue for many of my clients and its not always clear why. Especially because the symptoms of wheat allergy, wheat intolerance, non-Celiac gluten sensitivity and Celiac disease are very similar.
So how do we know whats really going on?

A Potential Problem With Gluten Intolerance Testing
I want to mention that one potential problem with gluten intolerance testing is that gluten is made up of several hundred peptides and gliadin is made up of 12 different sub-fractions. Most modern-day gluten intolerance testing focuses on only the alpha-gliadin Therefore, there is considerable room for error and false-negative tests.
However, a lab called Cyrex Lab tests for these sub-fractions and may help to minimize false negatives in gluten intolerance testing. Cyrex also offers an Array 4 test to check for gluten cross-reactivity with other grains.
What Causes A Food Intolerance
It is often unclear why a person is sensitive to certain foods.
If your symptoms happen after eating dairy products, it’s possible you may have lactose intolerance. This means your body cannot digest lactose, a natural sugar found in milk, yoghurt and soft cheeses. A GP can usually diagnose lactose intolerance by looking at your symptoms and medical history.
Some people have trouble digesting wheat and experience bloating, wind, diarrhoea, being sick and stomach pain after eating bread. Read more about wheat intolerance .
Otherwise, the culprit may be a food additive, chemical or contaminant, such as:
- monosodium glutamate
- toxins, viruses, bacteria or parasites that have contaminated food
- artificial food colours, preservatives or flavour enhancers

Do You Experience These Symptoms
Having three or more of the symptoms and health issues listed below indicates that you may have gluten sensitivity. Even if you have one of these health issues, it would be worth considering gluten as an underlying cause. Of course not everyone with these symptoms is sensitive to gluten, but if your symptoms continue despite what youve tried, eating gluten-free is one possible solution.

- Frequent infections in any location .
- Pain such as headaches, migraines, joint pain, muscle aches, fibromyalgia, and/or pelvic pain.

- Mental/emotional symptoms such as brain fog, decreased memory, lack of focus, anxiety, depression, PMS, mood changes, and sleep issues.
- Skin rashes such as hives, eczema, acne, rosacea, dandruff, warts, and psoriasis.
- Autoimmunity such as Hashimotos, Lupus, M.S., Rheumatoid arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns, and others.
