GLUTEN FREE BANANA OAT MUFFINS RECIPE | The Freedom Theory

Reunited, and it feeeels so gooood!

These 6 words looped in my head approximately 1 gorillion times as I finally managed to lay my quivering hands on a box of Chocolate Honey Bunches in the year 2016.

Those who have been following the blog should be familiar with my love for Honey Bunches of Oats with Chocolate Clusters, a cereal that was discontinued some 6 years ago in a decision by Post Foods that Im still convinced was somehow a violation of the Geneva Conventions.

I wont bore you with the details, but Chocolate Honey Bunches were a pivotal part of my personal cereal mythology back in their heyday. Lets just say that without Honey Bunches of Oats with Chocolate Clusters, this site probably wouldnt exist today.

But now, I no longer need to cry forlorn tears over faded Polaroids of the cereal, because its back. Does it live up to my own super high standards? Im willing to undergo a sugar high to find out.

As you might have noticed in the above photo, I was so excited to munch these Bunches that I accidentally tore the box open with the grace of a drunken, dizzy Grizzly. I was a bit apprehensive about Posts choice to make this cereal gluten free, but even that couldnt sedate this bears growling stomach.

But unlike Cocoa Pebbles, deep beneath the chocolaty exterior of these flakes is that sticky sweet, signature HBO finish of golden toasted honey. Its almost like some poor honeybee flew a little too close to one of those chocolate fondue waterfalls.

Why Is Added Sugar Bad

In American foods, sugar is added to almost everything. Health experts label added sugar as one of the worst ingredients in modern American diets.

For one, added sugar increases the risk significantly of many chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. It also leads to drastic blood sugar raises and crashes, which puts stress on the body and leads to large fluctuations in mood and energy levels.

Processed foods, including many breakfast cereals, tend to be higher in added sugars. It is important to look for cereal choices that are low in added sugar and use whole, naturally sweet, ingredients.

If you start your day off with a cereal loaded with added sugar, you will likely experience an energy crash a few hours later followed by an intense craving for another high-carb or sweet snack. This can easily create a cycle of highs and lows throughout the day.

Honey Bunches of Oats are high in added sugar, with 14 grams of added sugar per serving.

What Cereals Are Good For You

Go Gluten Free with Honey Bunches of Oats

Cereals having the lowest or no amount of added sugar are the healthiest ones. Just pick up the box and check the label for added sugars. If it contains more than 3g of sweeteners, put the box back in its place.

Cereal with no added sugars may be hard to find but not impossible. So, if you find one, make it your permanent breakfast meal.

Checking the label on the box for cereal and every product is essential for both vegans and everyone else. It will help you cross out unhealthy products from the list. Moreover, you can avoid consuming the ingredients you are allergic to if you read the label.

What Is A Fortified Cereal

Honey Bunches of Oats are a fortified cereal meaning it contains added vitamins and minerals, such as iron, vitamin B3, zinc, folic acid, and vitamin B12. These vitamins and minerals are added to increase the nutritional content of the cereal as refined whole grains lose most of their nutrients when processed.

Food with added vitamins and minerals may seem like a healthy choice, however some fortified cereals have been found to be over fortified which has been harmful to consumers.

4 Plant-Based Meals for Kid’s LUNCHBOXES! | Bunches of Lunches

Like most breakfast cereals, Honey Bunches of Oats is loaded with high-carb sweeteners and a variety of GMO ingredients like corn, wheat, and rice. Dont be fooled by the name, as there is actually very little honey in a serving. Ingredients are listed in descending order by their weight and quantity. Honey is listed as the 12th ingredient with corn, whole grain wheat, and sugar being the primary ingredients.

Honey is the thirteenth ingredient listed, meaning there is very little actual honey in Honey Bunches of Oats. Most of the sweetness comes from corn syrup and refined sugar. Some people mistake Honey Bunches of Oats for a healthy cereal, however, when choosing cereals we should look for brands with minimal ingredients, no refined oils, and no natural & artificial flavorings. When we see Natural & Artificial Flavor this is essentially an umbrella term that can cover an array of synthesized chemicals that aim to mimic natural flavors, such as honey.

We Dont Like Sugar Or Gluten So We Skipped Them Altogether

If you’re at the grocery store looking for a gluten-free cereal that isnt loaded with sugar, good luck. But don’t worry, we’ll do you one better we’ll bring you that coveted, gluten-free, sugar-free cereal straight to your front door.

Like you, we wanted a healthy, gluten-free breakfast so we decided to make a cereal with zero sugar and just 1 gram of carbohydrates. And then we packed it with 16 grams of protein because we wanted something that tasted good but would actually carry us over to lunchtime.

There’s no need to worry about cross-contamination with Cereal School, because we don’t include rice flour or oat flour in our products. Instead, we use a combination of protein and tapioca fiber, then sweeten it with monk fruit and cinnamon, for the sweetest morning bowl.

If you’re craving that breakfast bowl from your childhood, we promise our Cinnamon Bun and Fruity varieties taste just as good as you remember. Only now you can enjoy it without the junk. But don’t take our word for it try them now and see for yourself.

Why Do People Make Such A Big Deal Over Gluten

The problem with gluten is that its extremely prone to cross-contamination. If you have celiac disease or an intolerance to gluten, whatever you eat shouldnt come into physical contact with a gluten-containing product.

But how often does that really happen? you might wonder. The answer: Quite a bit, often before that bowl youre impatiently waiting for is even manufactured.

Grains are a field crop, and many farms harvesting these crops grow more than one. And while this might be an extreme example, cross-contamination can start in the field. Farmers who grow wheat and oats might use the same machinery for both crops. Sometimes, this can cause one product to sift into the other, either during harvest, transport, or while being milled into flour. Suddenly, those gluten-free oats are no longer gluten-free.

The solution? If youre extremely sensitive to gluten, search for products that were manufactured in a gluten-free facility. This is what General Mills did with Honey Nut Cheerios and Lucky Charms: The products have always been made with oat flour, a naturally gluten-free flour. However, to combat cross-contamination, they began sifting out stray products from wheat, rye, and barley.
