Celiac.com 10/10/2022 – For the 2022 Halloween, we’ve updated out Safe Gluten-Free Halloween Candy list from A to Z with new candy by manufacturers, both large and small, to offer our best, most up-to-date list of safe, gluten-free Halloween candy, along with a list of unsafe candy that contains gluten and should be avoided by people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

In addition to Certified gluten-free Oreo Cookies, we’ve included Snyder’s Of Hanover’s Gluten Free Pretzel Sticks. We’ve added new gluten-free treats by Annie’s Organic, ChocZero, Enjoy Life Foods, Free 2b, Fruidles, LaetaFood, Milkita, the women-owned lollipop company Tazzy, The Daily Crave Beyond Churros, Salted Caramel, Tootsie Pops, Unreal, YumEarth, and Zachary Confections.

Celiac.com Sponsor :Weve also expanded the manufacturer contact information for easier answers to gluten-free questions. While we do try to make both lists as complete and thorough as possible, but please do not consider the information definitive. Please only use it as a guideline.

Because manufacturer formulations, recipes and practices can change, it’s important to double-check labels, and/or manufacturer information. Candy that is reliably gluten-free at one point may suddenly be made with gluten ingredients. The opposite can also happen, as more manufacturers, when possible, are trying to use gluten-free ingredients.

As always, Celiac.com wishes you and your loved ones a safe and happy gluten-free Halloween!

Whats the difference between Mars bar and Milky Way?

If youre referring to the American Mars bar, it was discontinued back in the early 2000s. It was sort-of/kind-of like a Snickers bar, only with almonds instead of peanuts. With the Milky Way being chocolate covered nougat and caramel, the difference would have been simply the addition of the nuts.

Tips For Picking Gluten Free Halloween Candy

  • Always read the labels carefully. If you are not sure about an ingredient do not eat them. Candy ingredients can be confusing because they contain a lot of additives and words we don’t recognize. Look for these words to see if the candy contains gluten ingredients like wheat, malt, barley, rye, triticale, or oats.
  • Formulations and ingredients change often so it’s always best to double-check with the manufacturer’s website to be sure.
  • You can’t always rely on the allergen statement disclosures that appear at the end of the ingredient list. You must check the ingredient labels to be sure.
  • You can always donate the gluten-containing candy to a local food bank.

What Does Gluten Do To Your Body

Everyone reacts differently to gluten but for some sensitive individuals, it can cause problems.

According to The Harvard School of Public Health, gluten can cause fatigue, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, and malnutrition in certain people who are sensitive to it.

It is estimated that 1 in 133 people have celiac disease in the United States but 83% have been misdiagnosed with someone else.

So it can be scary to think about trick or treating on Halloween and getting a bag full of candy that you are not sure you can eat.

Halloween is just around the corner, and while non-food treats are a wonderful safe and all-inclusive way to celebrate, you might also want to find some candies that are safe for your child to eat. I have compiled a list of gluten free candy listed by manufacturer that I based on information provided on the manufacturer websites or that I received via email or on the phone from their customer service department.

**Please remember that ingredient lists can change at any time, so its always best to read the ingredient labels and call the manufacturer directly if youre unsure. Additionally, sometimes the ingredients on a mini version of a candy are processed differently than the regular size version so dont just assume that a mini version is gluten free without double checking. How To Store Them

I must admit, storing these chocolate treats in the house during a lockdown and managing not to eat them all in one day has proven to be a challenge!

When theyre not in your mouth, these bars need to be chilled because these bars have a soft centre. You can of course keep them in the fridge but I think that they taste best when stored in the freezer, as the inside doesnt freeze but the outer chocolate shell becomes crisp .

My next plan for these vegan mars bars is to remake them with an ice-cream layer in the middle, hello summer. So make sure you stay tuned for that one, which will likely be in the near future cos the suns been out blazing here lately.

Candy can be a common source of a number of gluten-containing ingredients. In addition to obvious things like wheat in candy with cookie pieces, candy can also contain multiple forms of gluten that are not always obvious. Common examples of gluten on candy ingredient labels include:

    • Malt or maltose a processed sweetener derived from barley

    • Starch or modified food starch commonly derived from wheat or corn

Have A Halloween Candy Game Plan

If your child has celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, the best way to handle Halloween is to go in with a game plan. Teach your kids not to eat any candy until youve had a chance to inspect it, says Katarina Mollo, a registered dietitian, parent to a child with celiac disease and director of education for the National Celiac Association. She also encourages getting your kids involved in sorting the candy.

I talk to my kids about candy that is gluten free and candy that isnt to help them pick when they get offered a bowl of candy at the door when trick-or-treating, Mollo says. Later on, I go through the candy with the kids so they get practice reading labels.

Mollo also uses the Switch Witch at her house. Thats a friendly witch who comes and takes away excess Halloween candy and leaves a gift behind in exchange. The Switch Witch isnt just for kids with food allergies , but can be used by any parent who isnt crazy about having a sack full of sugary treats in the house.
