The Dietitians List Of Low Fodmap Protein Bars

Snacks with Wax: Nature Valley “Oats and Honey” Granola Bar

For people with IBS, the protein aisle can be pretty intimidating. There are certainly no shortage of bars to choose from, but finding one that has the right taste, texture, and complies with the low FODMAP diet can be tricky. To make matters worse, most bars have tons of ingredients and additives, making label reading a pain in the you-know-what. The following article aims to simplify this process by providing a number of great-tasting, low FODMAP protein bar options. Along the way, Ill also give you a list of common ingredients found in high FODMAP bars, so you can read labels with more confidence.

On a personal note

Protein bars can easily be a high FODMAP bomb. I can recall several times in my life before I became FODMAP aware when I had to leave work due to severe gut issues after eating a low carb protein bar. In later years, I learned that sugar alcohols and inulin are major triggers, and I avoid both by all means to this day. Hopefully, this article saves you from suffering this same angst.

Are Nature Valley Bars Good For Weight Loss

Nature Valley bars are high in calories and contain sugar and processed oil. By looking at these ingredients, you can notice that the high-calorie content is not ideal for weight loss.

Also, its known that sugar and processed oils are not recommended to be consumed if you try to lose weight. On the other hand, we can see the other healthy ingredients that are found in the bars such as whole grains, nuts, and dried fruits that contain healthy nutrients like fiber, which is important for keeping you feeling full for longer and for improving gut health, which supports healthy digestion.

So, as we can notice here, Nature Valley bars contain a mix of healthy and unhealthy ingredients. But in general, they are for energy more than for weight loss. They can be a perfect snack and a good option if they are used in moderation in a balanced diet.

Which Nature Valley Bars Are Not Gluten Free

Nature Valley Protein Peanut & Chocolate Bar Review

While the Nature Valley Oats N Honey Crunchy Bars appear to be gluten free, in reality they are not because they contain oats.

While oats are technically naturally gluten free, they are highly cross contaminated with gluten during the growing, harvesting, and manufacturing processes. In fact, one study found that 109 out of 134 commercial oat products contained mixtures of wheat, barley and rye. You can read more about oats and why theyre not always considered gluten free in my article, Are Oats Gluten Free?

Another confusing aspect of the Nature Valley label is its contains or may contains statements. Companies are required by law to disclose if a product contains any of the top eight allergens, including wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, milk and eggs.

Nature Valleys label says it contains soy, and may contain peanut, almond and pecan ingredients. But it says nothing about wheat. Truth be told, the label absolutely should say may contain wheat as well.

Because the contains statement doesnt say may contain wheat, many gluten-free eaters think its safe to consume, but its not safe at all.

I also independently tested the Nature Valley Bars with my Nima Sensor, a portable gluten-detecting device. Nima found gluten, offering yet another proof-point that these crunchy bars are not gluten-free safe.

Please note that the Nature Valley Fruit & Nut Bars and the Sweet and Salty Nut Bars also are NOT gluten free .

Ingredients To Approach With Caution

Pea Protein

Recent testing of pea protein brought mixed results when determining the FODMAP load. Unfortunately pea protein is no longer listed as low FODMAP per Monash. Many vegan protein bars contain pea protein in varying amounts. While small amounts are unlikely to cause IBS symptoms, some brands may pack a larger dose, which can result in IBS symptoms for some sensitive individuals. We are waiting for more Monash testing of pea protein for better guidance on how best to approach this protein.

Raisins and Craisins

Both of these dried fruits are low FODMAP in small servings. If found towards the end of the ingredient list, they are likely present in small portions. Best to avoid or test tolerance with a small portion if raisin paste is present.

Making Your Granola Bars

Making granola bars can seem like an intimidating task meant for soccer moms and people with entirely too much time on their hands, but I can reassure you thats not the case with this recipe.

We are 100% not above using shortcuts and today, the microwave is saving us some time and dirty dishes.

Start by spreading your oats and nuts out on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. These get toasted to perfection in the oven while we prep our other ingredients.

In a microwave safe large mixing bowl, melt the butter and honey together. Then mix in the maple syrup.

Once the oats and nuts are done in the oven, they get folded in to the honey mixture in the large mixing bowl. At that point its important to give everything 10-15 minutes to cool down, so when you add the chocolate chips they dont melt completely.

All the add-ins get folded into the oats, then packed into a square baking pan . Bonus points if you use the same parchment paper you used for the oats and nuts! It ends up being the perfect length to fold the excess parchment paper over the top of the bars, and pack them down without getting your hands dirty.

From there, they need to chill in the refrigerator for a few hours before taking them out and slicing them into bars.

These gluten free granola bars should keep in an airtight container in your fridge for up to 1 week.
