Are Great Value Spices Gluten Free

Gluten Free Taco Seasoning

Walmart has increasingly elevated its gluten-free offerings over the years, and even its store brand, Great Value, offers many GF-labeled products.

I was unable to find out which Great Value spices, specifically, are gluten free, however, if the product is labeled gluten free, Walmart says the product has been validated.

Verdict: Maybe, and only if labeled

How To Make Gluten

Cook your meat of choice in a large skillet over medium heat until cooked through.

Add 6-8 teaspoons of gluten-free taco seasoning mix and stir.

Add ¼ cup water to help incorporate the seasoning into the meat.

Continue to cook until combined and all water cooks off.

I usually make tacos with beef or chicken, if I made gluten-free fish tacos I use about half as much of the gluten-free taco seasoning mix.

Are Mccormick Spices Gluten Free

McCormick says its products that contain gluten will always be declared on the product label by the common name of the gluten source such as barley, wheat, rye, oats or triticale.

The company adds that if any product has a gluten-free claim on the label, the product and the manufacturing line has been validated gluten free.

McCormick recommends customers read the ingredient statement on each individual product to ensure the most accurate, up-to-date information as product formulas may change.McCormick adds, Our McCormick facilities have allergen, sanitation, and hygiene programs in place. Our employees follow good manufacturing practices and are trained in the importance of correct labeling and the necessity of performing thorough equipment clean-up and change over procedures to minimize cross-contact of ingredients.

Verdict: Yes, but look for the gluten-free claim on individual spices.

Why Isnt All Taco Seasoning Naturally Gluten Free

Since taco seasoning is simply a blend of dried spices, you might assume that all taco seasoning is naturally gluten free. But like most anything else packaged, there is always the possibility that theres a gluten-containing ingredient added.

Some spice mixes have added gluten in the form of malt for flavoring, or even wheat flour as a binder or thickener. The same goes for packaged sauces.

I assume these brands began adding these flavoring or fillers long before there was any sensitivity to something gluten-containing. Back in the early 2000s, I barely even knew what gluten was, much less how to avoid it!

Now their taco seasoning blend is what it is, and its not worth reformulating. Think about Rice Krispies and their added malt syrup.

Its easy to check the label of spice blends to see if they contain any suspicious ingredients. If youre unsure, dont use the blend.

Youre unlikely to get even trace amounts of gluten from a single ingredient spice, like those you use to create this homemade gluten free taco seasoning. But of course its possible.

When Is A Spice Brand Considered Gluten Free

For a manufacturer to label a store-bought spice as gluten free, it cannot contain any gluten-containing ingredients, and it must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten per the FDAs gluten-free labeling guidelines.

For a store-bought spice to be labeled certified gluten-free, it must be third-party verified to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, and some certifying agencies even require stricter protocols, calling for a product to contain less than 10 ppm.

When you look at a spice jar and see only a single ingredient , but dont see a gluten-free disclosure, you may wonder if the spice is safe to consume.

This is where things get tricky as gluten is known to not only lurk in surprise places, but also spices are notoriously coming in cross contact with gluten during the manufacturing process.

    Is This Blend Spicy

This homemade taco seasoning contains just ¼ tsp of cayenne to give it a tiny kick without making you sweat. If you hate spicy heat, omit the cayenne altogether.

To amp up the heat factor, you can double the cayenne, or add a bit of guajillo or ancho chile spice, too. Both chiles add some spice to the blend that isnt too overpowering. And if you want to add more spice yet, add a few drops of your favorite flaming hot sauce into your prepared taco meat.

Is Ortega Taco Seasoning Mix Gluten Free

Ortega taco seasoning mix is not gluten-free. Ill tell you, I went on a deep dive to prove myself wrong here, because I was certain this brand was gluten-free.

After checking and rechecking the ingredients lists against what else I know about gluten-containing ingredients, and the hidden names of gluten, I was sad to realize this brand actually does contain gluten.

You can find it under yeast extract in most of their taco seasonings. Yeast extract is derived from barley, which is a source of gluten.

The only one of their products that had no gluten-containing ingredients was their fish taco seasoning mix, however that wasnt labeled as gluten-free either.

The bottom line when it comes to buying gluten-free taco seasoning is that there are only a few good options and brands, and even fewer if youre looking for that gluten-free label.

The best and most simple way to ensure what youre eating is gluten-free is to make your own gluten-free taco seasoning at home from scratch.

What Can I Use If I Don’t Have Taco Seasoning

If you don’t have taco seasoning at home, there’s a few options you may already have in your pantry that you could use as a substitute. The most common substitute is chili powder. Chili powder is often a mix of various spices including cumin, garlic and onion powder. It’s super rich in flavor, so works well on it’s own. Other popular substitutes include sriracha hot sauce, fajita seasoning and chili-cumin combo. Some of these alternatives may contain gluten, so be sure to choose the gluten free versions.

Is Mccormick Taco Seasoning Gluten Free

Out of all the popular brands of taco seasoning you can buy at most grocery stores, Id say after doing my research, I trust them the most to be honest about whats in their products.

The reason for this is that they are committed to labeling products with any hidden sources of food allergens that people may be avoiding.

For example, they know that many people who avoid gluten are looking for certain ingredients, like maltodextrin as a hidden source of gluten.

Since maltodextrin can be sourced from a variety of different carbohydrate sources, those of us who are gluten-free are looking out for a sign that the maltodextrin used in a product is in fact gluten-free or not, so we know to avoid it.

McCormick makes sure to list ingredients like maltodextrin with a note of its source, like Maltodextrin so its easy for you and I to find products that are safe and those to avoid.

They also do this with milk products, which is helpful if you avoid dairy products as well, like I do.

You can read more about their labeling under the FAQ on their website: How does McCormic label for gluten?

I inquired about Durkee spices to B& G Foods, Inc., its parent company . B& G said:

We do not maintain a list of gluten-free spices nor are we currently testing for gluten. However, single ingredient spices are inherently gluten free.

We have a strong allergen clean out policy that has been validated to ensure that there is no allergen cross contamination at the plant. Since ingredients and facilities may change from time to time, always check the label on a specific product for current ingredient and allergen information.

Is Mccormick Taco Seasoning Packet Gluten

Taco Seasoning l 3 minutes l Vegan Gluten free Paleo l A tasty spice blend with bold flavor # Shorts

The standard McCormick Taco Seasoning does not contain any gluten ingredients. However, some of the ingredients are at a high risk of cross contact. This means that non-gluten products may have come into contact with gluten ingredients when being made. So although there are no gluten ingredients, if you’re celiac or a sensitive gluten intolerant, it may be best to avoid. But the good news is, McCormick have a certified gluten free version of their infamous taco seasoning, which we’ll be looking at in more detail later.

    What Spices Go Into Gluten

You are going to get a different answer from each person. I like to make my gluten-free taco seasoning mix from the following spices:

    • chili powder
    • garlic salt
    • cayenne pepper

Because there are only spices in this gluten-free taco seasoning recipe this seasoning is also Paleo, Grain-Free, and Whole30.

Why Isnt All Taco Seasoning Gluten

Not all taco seasoning is gluten-free, because some brands add in thickeners or preservatives that contain gluten. These might be obvious in the ingredient list under names like wheat flour or enriched flour, but they might also be obscure.

You will have to look a little bit harder for them. Gluten could be under the name of bouillon, barley, malt these, yeast extract, or autolyzed yeast extract.

These ingredients might add some flavor or serve a purpose to the recipe the brand is using, but they are also hidden sources of gluten.

When its not obviously spelled out that a product contains gluten, it can be easy to miss.

Your best bet is to always look at ingredient lists. Look for hidden sources of gluten and the names of gluten so avoid them when you find them.

You can also look at labels on the front or back of the package. Many times youll be able to find if a product is gluten-free by looking for the certified gluten-free label or a note on the packaging that says gluten free.

The FDA requires that a product can only have a gluten-free label if the product contains less than 20ppm of gluten.

Of course, the safest way to have gluten-free taco seasoning is to make it yourself using gluten-free spices and herbs that you have in your pantry.

Use the spices and herbs that you use for other cooking that you have already researched and know are gluten-free for your gluten-free taco seasoning mix.
