Gluten Free Vs Keto: The Key Differences

Easy Keto Bread with no crazy ingredients! GLUTEN FREE TOO!

Gluten is a mixture of proteins that is found in wheat, barley, and rye. Those who have been diagnosed with Celiac or Crohns disease are unable to eat gluten as it causes an immune reaction. There are others who have a sensitivity to gluten, which can cause discomfort. There are also a host of other reasons why folks avoid gluten.

Going gluten free can give your intestines a welcome break as foods with gluten are typically hard to digest. If you find that you get a stomach ache when you eat foods like pasta, bread, or cakes, you may want to try avoiding gluten.

The keto diet, short for ketogenic, is low in carbs and high in fat. When you replace carbohydrates with fats, your body goes into a state of ketosis. Its a natural metabolic state that can promote weight loss. During ketosis, your body produces ketone bodies out of fats and uses them for energy rather than carbohydrates. In that way, your body burns fat a lot quicker and easier.

When you follow any of the many types of keto diets, you can lower your insulin and blood sugar levels. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, going keto can help you manage it. If youre concerned with your heart health, you can also benefit from keto as it is known to maintain healthy cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

Do You Need To Refrigerate Keto Bread

Yes, it is ideal to store keto bread in the refrigerator. It is also good to not slice the bread ahead of time. To prolong the shelf life of your keto bread you will want to slice it when you are hungry, and keep the entire loaf in a Ziploc bag, or a Tupperware container in the fridge. It will last in the fridge for 7-10 days.

Gluten free can be eaten on keto diet. Glutan is a protein found in rye, wheat and barley. Gluten free does not mean low carb, It simply means no food needed in preparing food like rye, oats, spelts, kamut, durum, malt extract, malted milk powder and molasses etc.

For many people, carbohydrates cause weight gain, so that is why I am going to be featuring keto recipes without gluten for people who want to get started on the keto gluten-free diet. Keto, specifically, is typically gluten-free, as foods containing gluten contain too many carbohydrates to be included on the diet. It is not too difficult to follow this diet, provided that you pay attention to the labels of foods with gluten-free, or, even better, can make homemade meals, which are sure to be healthier. Can You Eat Bread On Keto

We all love bread because of its versatility, you can spread some butter on it and enjoy the creamy butteriness, or place it in a toaster for a crunchy treat, make a sandwich with it, and much more! Cancelling bread entirely from your diet can be quite tricky, as this would mean that youll have to avoid your favourite lunches or snacks for as long as youll be on keto.

No white bread, wheat bread, sandwich bread, loaves, boules or baguettes are keto friendly at your local store. Since a 2000 calorie daily keto diet only allows around 25 to 40 grams of carbs, you wont have room for much more after just one slice of bread. For this reason, many have decided to rid their diet of bread completely, as opposed to having an occasional nibble, cause lets face it thats never enough!

Gluten And Low Carb Or Ketogenic Diets

Since gluten is most commonly found in carbohydrate-containing foods, low carb and ketogenic diets are almost always low in gluten. A keto diet, in particular, is usually gluten-free because foods containing gluten have too many carbs to fit within the diet.

However, you may find that some low carb and keto foods contain a small amount of gluten, especially jerky, sausages, soups and broths. If you suspect you have a gluten sensitivity, you may want to consider less-processed or gluten-free versions.24

The bottom line is that a low carb or ketogenic diet is a great alternative for individuals with gluten or other carbohydrate-related intolerances. Plus, you may see numerous other potential benefits from carbohydrate reduction such as weight loss, improved metabolic health, and more.

You can read more about those benefits in our evidence-based guides on low-carb and keto diets.

Gluten Free Does Not Necessarily Mean Healthier

Despite the health claims for eating gluten-free, no scientific evidence supports weight loss with a gluten-free diet or suggests that the general population would benefit from avoiding gluten for health reasons.21

Although many people think that a gluten-free diet is healthier and more nutritious, the opposite may be true, as many products marketed as gluten-free are highly processed.

These gluten-free foods are often made with refined grains and additives such as tapioca starch, less commonly fortified with folic acid and iron, and have less fiber and more sugar compared to regular gluten-containing foods.22

In fact, several studies have actually found a tendency toward weight gain and obesity among those who follow a gluten-free diet.23

In addition, highly-processed gluten-free diets that are high in refined carbohydrates are often deficient in important nutrients such as iron, zinc, vitamin D, and protein.

We suspect that these drawbacks would be significantly attenuated by eating a whole-foods, minimally processed gluten-free diet.

Does Gluten Consumption Impact Health Negatively

Why avoid gluten? People with Celiac disease must cut out gluten to avoid symptoms of diarrhea, bloating, gas, and fatigue, as well as longer-term complications of anemia, osteoporosis, and damage to the lining of the small intestine.

Those who run to the restroom after eating gluten and donât test positive for Celiac disease may have Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity< sup> 2< /sup> , an inflammatory disorder with gastrointestinal issues similar to irritable bowel syndrome. Itâs harder to test for NCGS than Celiac or a wheat allergy, as no specific clinical biomarkers are present< sup> 3< /sup> .

Most people who suspect theyâre sensitive to gluten try elimination diets that remove gluten for a period of time before adding it back in to see if symptoms return.

Even people who donât experience severe or moderate reactions to gluten or wheat may avoid it because they believe gluten is unhealthy. Many proponents of gluten-free diets or grain-free, low-carb eating plans suggest that gluten triggers inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and changes to the gut microbiome< sup> 4< /sup> .

Some data suggest that following a gluten-free diet may help alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms< sup> 5< /sup> in people with skin conditions, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, type 1 diabetes, and neurologic disorders. But, research identifies few benefits to eating gluten-free for healthy people without gluten intolerant disorders or disease.

Does Gluten Impact Blood Sugar

Gluten by itself may not raise blood sugar, but many foods that contain gluten can raise blood glucose levels. Grain-based foods that contain gluten can also contain a high amount of carbohydrates. Well Butter! Do you need anything else?

Ok, but seriously, I eat them with a variety of things.

I make sandwiches with keto chicken salad for lunches and it is perfect. I make a batch of keto rolls and a batch of chicken salad and my lunches are set for a few days.

Which is GREAT because lunch is always the wildcard for me.

Another fun idea is to make mini pizza rolls. I wish I had a picture to share, but basically you just cut the low carb rolls in half, layer it with keto pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni and you have little pizza rolls! You can even bake them if you want, but you dont need to.
