Carbohydrates: How Carbs Impact Health And Blood Sugar
Carbohydrates are sugars, starches, and fibers found in milk products, fruits, vegetables, grains, and sweeteners. Carbs break down into sugar, or glucose, in the blood and are converted into energy.
High-carb foods and drinks raise blood sugar shortly after consumption. In healthy people, when a rush of glucose enters the bloodstream, the beta cells in the pancreas release an amount of insulin thatâs proportional to the amount of glucose in the blood. Insulin directs the glucose into the cells so it can be used for energy.
Any unused energy gets moved to the liver and muscles for future use. When the liver and muscles stores reach capacity, any unused glucose gets stored in fat tissues.
When glucose gets stored repeatedly and doesnât get used by physical activity or intermittent fasting, fat storage accumulates and weight gain happens. A habitual long-term cycle of eating and drinking more sugar than you need and can burn is associated with detrimental health outcomes such as insulin resistance< sup> 12< /sup> , metabolic syndrome< sup> 13< /sup> , obesity< sup> 14< /sup> , type 2 diabetes< sup> 15< /sup> , and cardiovascular disease< sup> 16< /sup> .

Why Go On A Low Carb Diet
A low-carb diet can be useful when you are trying to lose weight. If you are going on a diet to lose weight, one of the hardest things to get through is the hunger that you might experience.
Studies have shown that cutting carbs can reduce hunger as there is a need for fewer calories in a day.
There is rapid weight loss when on a low-carb diet because it gets rid of excess water from your body and your insulin levels are reduced. You also increase your levels of good cholesterol when on this diet.

How Do I Know If I Have An Issue With Gluten
If you have chronic problems with diarrhea, bloating, anemia, rashes, and/or fatigue, you should talk to your doctor about screening blood work to test for celiac disease.18 A positive screening test will usually be followed by a visit to the gastroenterologist to discuss doing a biopsy of the small intestine, which is the definitive way to make the diagnosis.
If your screening for celiac disease is negative, but you have many of the same symptoms when eating gluten-containing foods, then you may choose to remove these foods from your diet and wait for your symptoms to fully resolve. Then, slowly reintroduce these foods to see if the symptoms recur. This can be done multiple times. Foods that reliably provoke symptoms should probably be avoided.
Remember, it may be difficult to pinpoint if symptoms are being caused by gluten or some other component of these foods. A series of different food tolerance tests may be your best bet.
For instance, if you do just fine with gluten-containing homemade bread but have symptoms after eating processed gluten-containing products from the store, the main offender may not be gluten. But if you react poorly to both of these, then there is a higher likelihood that gluten could be the problem.
Youre Still Spiking Inflammation When Eating Gluten
Gluten-free products may still contain carbs, sugars, preservatives and other forms of additives. So if youre eating these processed foods regularly, youre still triggering inflammation, making it difficult to get healthy.
But with keto, you focus on avoiding carbs and not triggering inflammation. This is an essential difference because inflammation is a significant factor behind most chronic diseases.
Your body triggers inflammation in response to a threat. It helps prevent injuries from becoming fatal and infections from spreading.
But if youre eating processed foods that your body perceives as threats, youre always in this fight or flight mode, causing long-term damage.
So although youll be able to manage celiac disease with a gluten-free diet, youll still trigger inflammation by eating high-carb processed foods. Here is a study that outlines the pros and cons of a gluten free diet for people with celiac disease.

Nutritional Imbalance And Deficiencies
As with any other diet, if not done properly, a gluten-free diet can cause a lack of essential nutrients and vitamins. To prevent this, an adequate substitution is required namely, supplements.
Vitamins and Minerals
When gluten-free, youll need to increase your intake of:
Dietary Fiber
Even the best gluten-free diet plan can lack fibers essential helpers of digestion. Luckily you can always supplement these. High-fiber foods are perfect for this and they include fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, chia seeds, or flaxseed.
Planning, preparing, and cooking fresh ingredients can be burdensome. Luckily, modern food delivery services like Home Chef can make your dieting considerably easier .
Sugars
If theres one thing thatstudies agree upon is that people tend to eat more sugars when they get gluten out of their diets.
Consequently, people start eating gluten-free snacks, which often contain more sugar than regular treats. Thus, if you want to stay healthy and lose a few pounds in the process, following a gluten andsugar-free diet is the way to go.
Fats
Theres no definitive answer on whether or not a gluten-free diet can lead to a higher fat intake. Some studies have confirmed it, but not conclusively. Whatever the case, you need to be careful not to replace pastries and cakes with equally bad fatty foods.

Can You Eat A Low
Yes, you can go on a low carb vegan gluten free diet if you choose to. However, we must caution you that this eating plan will be harder to maintain long-term. Why is this? The main reason is that these two diets are vastly different from each other and thus combining them brings in a whole challenge, especially in figuring out which foods you can consume without blurring the rules set for either eating plan.
For example As we are all aware, the ketogenic diet is a high-fat diet that relies heavily on animals and animal-based products for the required fat content. Such products include meats, fish and other seafood, dairy and dairy products, eggs, etc.
On the other hand, a vegan diet is a plant-based eating plan that excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs due to either ethical, environmental, or health reasons.
Looking at these two diets side by side you see how difficult it could be to follow through while we are not saying that you cannot get your keto friendly fats from plant-based foods, it will be harder for you to hit your fat goals on this meal plan.
Here are some pointers on how to follow a low-carb vegan gluten-free diet.

What Is The Low Carb Diet
But first, before I give you low carb diet recipes, lets explain what a low carb diet actually is. It is exactly like what it sounds like: a diet where you eat a higher lever of proteins and fats than carbs. Typically carbs in the form of sugary foods, pastas and breads are reduced, with the focus on real food with protein and natural fats and vegetables. Some studies have shown a low carb diet to aid in weight loss and improve general health markers.
Personally, I do not follow a low carb diet. I prefer to approach diet in a balanced way eating proteins, carbs and fats at every meal and allowing myself sugar treats every so often! However, as I said, this is something YOU guys ask for and I like to try to help where I can, even if its not the exact way I eat
Is Keto Gluten Free
Keto and gluten-free are quite similar, but they arent the same.
Keto focuses on removing all carbs while increasing fat intake to trigger ketosis. During ketosis, our bodies use ketones for fuel instead of glucose. This offers health benefits like:
- Lower blood sugar and insulin levels
- Reduced risk of developing chronic conditions like diabetes
But some keto products, especially bread and baked goods, sometimes use gluten as a stabilizer. So when eating these bread, doughnuts, and cakes, you wont knock yourself out of ketosis, but youre still consuming gluten which upsets your stomach.
The opposite is also true. Just because a food is gluten-free doesnt mean its healthy. Quinoa, rice, oat and buckwheat are all fine on a gluten-free diet. But they have a GI score of over 50, meaning they spike your blood sugar and insulin as high as table sugar.

The Science Behind A Low
A low-carb diet, such as the ketogenic diet, is a great way to lose weight. There are many supplements you can use to boost your diet and lose a few pounds quickly. While trying to lose a significant amount of weight, most people opt for using tools such as Lipo C injections or other weight loss supplements. Another way to kickstart your weight loss journey is with a low-carb, gluten-free diet. To avoid gluten means avoiding a lot of foods that are high in carbs, too, like bread, pasta, and cakes. Combining two diets may seem like a lot of trouble, but its actually the opposite with these two diets. Any low-carb diet already leaves off the table many gluten-containing products due to the high amount of calories they contain. All youll have to do is carefully check the labels of the food you buy to make sure theyre gluten-free.
Does Gluten Free Pasta Have Carbs
If youre wondering if gluten free pasta is lower in carbs, the answer is no.
Generally, a gluten free penne pasta has around 44 grams of carbs per 56 gram serve. Regular wheat pasta has about 18 grams. Gluten free flours can be very high in overall carbohydrates so when they are made into products, the carbs will follow.

Why Is Gluten Bad For Some People
Most of us ingest gluten in our diets since most cereals contain some amount of it. Main Differences Between The Gluten
Although they both involve restricting certain high-carbohydrate foods, gluten-free and low-carb diets have some important differences.
A gluten-free diet involves avoiding gluten a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye in all its forms. Its essential that people with coeliac disease, wheat allergies and gluten intolerances or sensitivities follow a gluten-free diet in order to avoid the serious health problems that consuming gluten can cause them.
But while a gluten-free diet involves avoiding products containing gluten, it does not prohibit any other forms of food. As long as they are free of gluten, followers are free to eat foods high in carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, and non-gluten grains such as rice and quinoa.
A low-carb diet such as keto, paleo and Atkins on the other hand, is about limiting all types of carbohydrate. Followers of these kind of diets tend to favour protein-rich foods, healthy fats and non-starchy vegetables as energy sources and avoid high-carb foods such as bread, pasta, fruits and certain veggies. Many people turn to low-carb diets to control their weight, rather than to control a disease, allergy or intolerance like those on gluten-free diets.
The Genesis Of Ketogenic
Despite its recent popularity, the ketogenic diet isnt new. Nearly a hundred years ago, it became a popular treatment for children with epilepsy, a seizure disorder. Before the 1920s, medications for epilepsy were limited and not always effective. Researchers noted that after two to three days of fasting, however, seizure activity decreased. This was thought to be a result of a metabolic change in the brain, from burning carbohydrates to utilizing ketone bodies from fat as the primary fuel.
Because long-term fasting isnt an option, researchers discovered that depriving the brain of carbohydrates produced many of the same beneficial effects. The first documented ketogenic diet plans were similar to what is used today for seizure control, with as many as 90 percent of calories in the diet coming from fat. The diet fell out of fashion in the late 1930s as a result of the discovery of more effective seizure-control medications, although it has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years for children with epilepsy that doesnt respond well to medications.
