Are Potato Chips Gluten

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley and these grains derivatives.

For the most part, chips are made of just a few ingredients: potatoes, salt, vegetable oil and any additional seasonings, according to the FDA. Generally, these are gluten-free and safe to eat if youre gluten-sensitive or intolerant.

But recipes will vary, depending on the flavors and added seasonings. Some flavors can be also made with malt vinegar or wheat starch, which both contain gluten, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. Plus, there are plenty of potato chip-cracker hybrids out there that may contain gluten.

So, checking the packaging carefully is crucial .

Storing Homemade Tortilla Chips

These tortilla chips will keep well in a sealed bag or container for up to 5 days in a dry climate. If you live in a humid climate, they will get stale quicker, just like store-bought chips.

If they start to get a little stale, you can always crisp them up in the oven by baking at 350F for 2-3 minutes.

What Do I Need To Know About Gluten

Easy 3 Ingredient CHILI CHEESE DIP | Easy Gluten Free Appetizer

If youre looking for a gluten-free chip brand, flavor, or variety, youll need to know what it means when you find a package with a gluten-free label.

As per the FDA regulations, a packaged food cannot contain more than 20ppm of gluten in order to have the gluten-free label on it.

This is helpful if you are gluten sensitive or intolerant when it comes to choosing chips that arent going to give you a reaction when you eat them.

On the other hand, there are plenty of chips that are available that contain no gluten-containing ingredients at all and still dont have a gluten-free label.

This is because the chips are processed and manufactured in the same facility or on the same processing equipment as products that do have gluten.

The companies cannot guarantee that there isnt cross contamination or they havent tested for trace amounts of gluten in order to meet the 20ppm threshold.

The bottom line is that if you see a gluten-free label, you can feel confident that the product is gluten-free. If you dont see it, it might still be okay for your diet if there are no gluten-containing ingredients and you arent sensitive to trace amounts of gluten from cross contamination.

Which Flour Is Best For Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies

Which gluten-free flour you use is important.

I tested this recipe using my gluten free flour blend which has equal parts white rice flour, brown rice flour, tapioca starch, and potato starch.

I would recommend using a similar blend. If you use a gluten free flour that has more starch or has too much xanthan gum in it your cookies wont spread the same way.

If you use a blend that already has xanthan gum in it, please omit the xanthan gum in the recipe.

If you double up on the xanthan gum, your cookies will be gummy.

I think this recipe would work well with Ryzes Blue Bag. I havent tested it yet but based on my experience with Ryze I expect it would turn out deliciously.

If you use Ryzes Blue Bag, be sure to omit the xanthan gum.

I expect that Bobs Red Mill 1 to 1 Gluten-Free Flour would also work well in this recipe.

There are lots of great gluten-free flour blends now days. What a magical time to be living, right?

What To Know About Cross Contamination At Restaurants

Most restaurants are not considered gluten free establishments so its useful to keep this in mind when making decisions about where to go and what to order.

Its important to know that even if a restaurant claims that their menu items do not contain gluten, that the possibility and probability of gluten in their products is going to be high if there is even one menu item with gluten available.

Depending on your level of sensitivity to gluten, this can be make or break information for you. If you are Celiac and are allergic to trace amounts of gluten, youll likely want to avoid most restaurants that offer any bread products or French fries that are cooked in a shared fryer with other gluten-containing ingredients.

If you are not sensitive to gluten at the trace level and have adverse reactions to gluten due to a food intolerance, you may decide that these trace amounts of gluten from cross contamination are worth risking for a quick, easy, and convenient food option.

Being aware of how you have reacted to gluten in your diet in the past and how much gluten it takes for your body to react is useful knowledge when it comes to situations like these. Use your best judgment about what you know about your body, how you react to gluten, and what the risks are for you specifically.
