During quarantine last year, I did my fair share of making gluten-free pizzas from scratch . I started by making rice flour crusts. They eventually worked out, but the dough did not bind together as well as regular pizza dough. . Eventually, I decided to take a different approach and began baking with Bob’s Red Mill gluten-free bread flour, which became my favorite method.

This crust is naturally dairy-free, using extra-virgin olive oil, honey, and warm water as the wet ingredients. The dry ingredients include gluten-free bread flour, baking powder, and salt, making this crust allergen-friendly and simple to bake. A good gluten-free pizza is all about the dough. There are plenty of pizza crust recipes out there, but most of them include dry yeast, and since that’s not something I keep in my pantry at all times, here is my favorite gluten-free, yeast-free pizza crust!

I usually par-bake extra crusts to cook later when I am in a rush, so next time I want a yummy pizza, I can just pull it out of the freezer, add sauce and cheese, and bake! To make the pizza baking process even faster, you can bake the pizza in an outdoor pizza oven once the dough is made.

We often associate “gluten-free” and “vegetable-based” items with high price tags and specialty health food stores like Whole Foods. But this alt-crust pizza from long-established frozen food brand Green Giant can be found on most supermarket shelves and at a price comparable to most traditional frozen pizzas and with more nutrients.

Or you have to buy premade crusts in the freezer section. Really each store is so different.

What Other Flours Can I Use In This Pizza Crust Recipe

I have tested this gluten-free pizza crust recipe with Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Gluten Free Flour Blend. It works incredible in this recipe and it’s my other go-to flour blend.

If you want to mix your own blend for this pizza combine 1 cup white rice flour, ¾ cup brown rice flour, ¼ cup tapioca starch.

I haven’t tried this gluten-free pizza dough recipe with other flour blends. If you do, please come back and let me know which gluten-free flour blend you used.

We’ve used this gluten-free pizza recipe several times just this month, and we’ve started passing the recipe on to friends and family member to show them how easy making your own pizza at home can be.

What To Look For In An Alt

If you’re on a gluten-free diet, the most obvious red flag in an alternative crust pizza is the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Check labels thoroughly. Many will place a “certified gluten-free” label in a prominent place on the packaging.

If you are looking to limit carbs , Palinski-Wade said to look for a pizza made from low-carb veggies like cauliflower or a low-carb flour like almond flour.

She added it’s nutritionally-wise to also look for a boost of fiber and protein . Avoid options that are high in saturated fat or sodium .

If you don’t have any dietary restrictions but are just looking for a healthier pie, Palinski-Wade advised looking for one made from whole ingredients. That means real foods you recognize, like vegetables, beans, spices and not a lot else. A shortlist of familiar ingredients is always the best bet.

Spinato’s Primavera Broccoli Crust Pizza’s Lick

Cons: Extremely thin crust, high price point

Once cauliflower got in on the pizza crust action, its cruciferous cousin, broccoli, couldn’t be far behind. Before you turn up your nose at broccoli in your pizza, check out Spinato’s Primavera Broccoli Crust Pizza my choice for tastiest alt-crust.

Spinato’s Primavera comes with a delicious, slightly-sweet tomato sauce, plus toppings of zucchini, bell pepper, mushroom, and mozzarella cheese. Its gluten-free crust mixes broccoli with brown rice flour and tapioca flour, plus Italian seasonings.

I certainly wouldn’t have been able to pinpoint its unique flavor as coming from broccoli. Instead, I found it to be pleasantly savory and earthy almost as if the recipe harnessed all the light, wholesome goodness of vegetables and none of the bitter flavors that gives kids an aversion to them. A surprisingly low-calorie count of 190 per quarter-pie serving makes it a nice choice for a lighter lunch.

Texture-wise, Spinato’s thin-crust crisped up beautifully to mimic the cracker-thin consistency of a classic New York-style pizza. My only issue with Spinato’s occurred when I pulled it out of the oven. With its uber-thin crust, it practically fell apart before I could maneuver it to a cutting board. Because of this, it didn’t make the cut for “best overall” but is still tasty enough for me to happily recommend.

Amys Gluten Free Rice Crust Cheese Pizza

Cost: $7.99

Price per ounce: 67 cents

Where I bought it: Kroger

My partner didnt mind Amys rice crust pizza, but I did not even clean my plate. The crust, while not bad, just wasnt what I was expecting. The consistency was dry and crumbly, even for gluten-free.

The size of the pizza would have been problematic for me, as I tend to eat a whole frozen pizza by myself, but since I was not a fan, I hardly noticed how little there was to go around. Despite the small size, this pizza is still among the most expensive in the under $10 category.

never will i ever turn down an easy homemade pizza recipe. while i absolutely love getting pizza at restaurants, theres nothing like a homemade crust. Easy Vegan and Gluten-free Pizza Crust is made with simple and wholesome ingredients that you can buy at almost any grocery store.

ive made TONS of pizza crusts throughout the years, even before going vegan. homemade pizza crust has always been something i have enjoyed making.

in terms of different flours used for pizza crust, you could say ive tried just about everything. the worst one by far that i ever made had coconut flour in it.

huge no no. gluten free all purpose flour and oat flour makes the best pizza crust in my opinion and i went with gluten free all purpose this time.

for the sour cream, i used Good Karma Foods but there is coconut oil in it!

the dough is really sticky, so just a pro tip when youre evenly distributing it into a pizza shape, slightly wet your hands and then do it!

in terms of the toppings, you can top with anything and everything. i took a pretty simple route this time but use whatever you want!

Where I bought it: Publix

Hands down, Freschetta has the best gluten-free pizza at my desired price point. The ingredients taste fresh when you bake the pizza, and the crust holds together remarkably well.

And at the $10 mark, this pizza comes in right on budget.

While the local Kroger tends to only have the cheese variant available, I have been fortunate to find the pepperoni pizza for the same price at Publix.

Rating: 4 out of 5 toppings

Unfortunately, the best gluten-free pizzas are going to exceed $10, though Costco has some bulk options in the $15 to $20 range that I would also recommend: Per pizza, they technically fall below the $10 mark, much like the Udis combo pack.

The quality ingredients of brands like Against the Grain are definitely something you should treat yourself to now and then , but for your cheap Thursday night dinner, these pizzas should do the trick.
