Why Does It Matter
Gluten can hide in a lot of places in your home, and unknowingly cross-contacting food can severely impact the help of those who cant eat gluten. Even preparing gluten-free food in the same appliances has a high risk of cross-contamination, and can make gluten-free food preparation much harder than anticipated.
Look Ahead At Flavors Online
Many larger ice cream chains have their gluten-free flavors listed online so you can make an informed decision before you go.
If youre going to a place that serves only ice cream , you might want to look at the places website to determine what flavors they have.
It can be nice to have the ability to look ahead and get a sense of what their options are, so you can do a little bit of research to find out what the ingredients are in each of these flavors.
Knowing before you go will help you narrow down your options, so you arent overwhelmed and feel like you have to make a quick decision.
If you love ice cream and you are on a gluten-free diet, I hope that this post is helpful for you to make informed decisions as to what brands, what flavors, and what choices you have when you go out for ice cream.
There are so many great gluten-free ice cream options both at grocery stores and when out at ice cream shops. I hope you find a great flavor and brand you can come back to time and time again.

Is Ice Cream Dairy Free
Ice cream is generally not dairy-free, as it is made with milk and cream which are animal products.
There are loads of dairy-free ice cream options on the market these days. These are made from different dairy-free milk alternatives, like cashew milk, coconut milk, soy milk, rice milk, and just about any other plant-based milk you could think of.
There are plenty of dairy-free ice cream brands available at the grocery store, however they tend to be on the expensive side compared to dairy ice creams.
I personally prefer to make my own dairy-free ice cream at home so that I can control the ingredients as well as keep the cost down.
Ive actually found that I can make about double the amount of dairy-free ice cream for half the cost of it would to buy a pint of the same flavor at the grocery store.

How To Find Gluten
Even if the ice cream you’re buying contains no gluten ingredients, it may still be at risk for cross-contamination, which occurs when gluten foods come in contact with other ingredients either through manufacturing or preparation, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.
When your ice cream is cross-contaminated, it can pose a risk for those with gluten intolerance.
You can avoid the risk of cross-contact by choosing your ice cream carefully. Generally, you’ll want to avoid buying ice cream at an ice cream shop, unless the location is certified gluten-free. Here’s why: Employees will generally re-use scoopers from flavor to flavor, making it hard to avoid cross-contamination.
At the grocery store, read the ingredient list of any flavor you decide to buy. Look out for any gluten-based foods and don’t forget to check the allergen listing for wheat or gluten, too.
Then, find a “Gluten-Free” label on the front package of the product. This label is regulated by the Food & Drug Administration and signifies that the food you’re eating is less than 20 parts per million of gluten, which is generally safe for gluten-sensitive people to eat.
If you want even more security, buy foods that are labeled “Certified Gluten-Free” and are vetted by trusted third parties, like the Gluten-Free Certification Organization . The GFCO has especially strict standards, certifying foods that are only 10 ppm of gluten or less, according to the organization’s website.

Why Is Gluten A Bad Thing
Gluten is only a bad thing for those with Celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, or wheat allergies.
Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease where gluten causes inflammation and can damage the small intestines lining. Gluten sensitivity is exactly what it sounds like the body reacts negatively to gluten, resulting in discomfort, bloating, gas, etc. Wheat allergies – which, yes, differ from gluten sensitivity – is the body being allergic to wheat rather than sensitive to gluten .
Then why does everyone hate on gluten? Well, gluten and wheat usually come entangled with products that are high in carbohydrates, like bread and baked goods. And whether we like it or not, diet culture is still alive and well, and diet culture tries to steer us away from carbs. Boo.
Basically, people arent hating on gluten itself gluten is just a scapegoat for avoiding carbs.
In fact, gluten can offer us some benefits of its own. Wheat, barley, and rye, which are the carriers of gluten, are all whole grains. Theres a considerable body of research linking the consumption of whole grains with improved health. Whole grains are a pure source of energy, lead to higher levels of satiety, and are a good source of natural fiber . Gluten also acts as prebiotic fiber and helps feed the good bacteria in our stomachs.
The takeaway: unless you have one of these three conditions, gluten isnt a bad thing.

How Can I Ensure My Kitchen Is Gluten
The best way to ensure that your kitchen remains gluten-free is to read up on areas that are high in cross-contamination and disinfect accordingly. Some areas that will be high in gluten are the toaster, the sponges and dishrags, food containers, and other areas that will constantly come into contact with wheat-based foods.

Keep Your Tummy Happy With Gluten
There are a few different gluten-free options you can choose from, and some of these may not be available in your location. The important thing is you make sure your ice cream is gluten-free. Some brands arent clear on whether their products are gluten-free or not, so make sure you check their ingredients carefully and enjoy.
Why Isnt Snickers Ice Cream Gluten
While the ingredients in snickers ice cream are gluten-free, the place where they are manufactures has a high chance of being cross-contaminated with products that contain wheat, which would make it unsafe consumption for people who rely on gluten-free diets day to day, such as people with celiac disease.

What To Watch For When Buying Gluten
When buying GF ice cream, youll want to avoid anything with cookies , brownies, or cone pieces unless the product is from one of the certified gluten-free ice cream brands.
Many sauces may be thickened with wheat flour, which contains gluten.
Additionally, malted products are made of malted barley and wheat flour, which are not safe for celiacs or those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Avoid malt in any form, even if the label lists malt powder.
Remember, the allergen information on the label does not always contain enough data to keep you safe if you have to avoid gluten. Thats because manufacturers only have to list the top eight allergens, which doesnt include gluten . Barley malt extract, for example, contains no wheat ingredients, so wheat wouldnt be listed on the allergen label of a product containing malt but no wheat. The absence of wheat does not necessarily make the product safe.
Additionally, look for phrases like, Manufactured in a facility that processes wheat, because you could get sick from cross contamination, depending on how sensitive you are.

Avoid Toppings As Cross Contamination Risk Is High
If youre at an ice cream shop where you can choose your own toppings or someone applies ice cream toppings for you, be sure that the spoons and scoops used arent going into different bowls.
For example, if a scoop is used for fresh strawberries, then dipped into a container with cookie bits, both the fresh strawberries and the scoop now have gluten on them.
Be aware of how easy this happens. To be safe, consider forgoing ice cream toppings while out.
What To Look For In Ice Cream
Check ingredients lists for any obvious or hidden sources of gluten, such as wheat flour, wheat, barley malt, cookie crumbs, malt syrup, or malt flavoring.
One of my little secrets is that I carry around a copy of my GFDF Take Along Cards so that I always have a point of reference when I can sneak a peek at the ingredient list of a food.
