Downside Of Protein Bars

Processed vs. Whole Foods

Protein bars will never take the place of whole foods. We can get many more vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals from whole foods versus fortified protein bars. While protein bars contain protein, which can promote satiety, they are often low volume and this may not keep some of us full.

A low FODMAP serving of fruit plus a small portion of nuts or aged cheese may help some feel more satisfied than reaching for a bar.

Possibly High Sugar or Saturated Fat Content

Protein bars are sometimes glorified candy bars due to the high sugar and saturated fat intake. Best to look at the nutrition label if you are wanting to choose a more nutritious option.

Tip: 4.2 grams of sugar is equal to 1 teaspoon. This information may help you understand how much added sugar is present in your bar.

Cost

Ounce for ounce, protein rich foods are far less expensive than the majority of protein bars on the market. Good protein sources such as canned and drained chickpeas and lentils, aged cheese, chicken, eggs, and lactose free milk are all budget friendly high protein low FODMAP food options.

Do Oats Contain Gluten

Yes, technically, pure, uncontaminated oats are gluten-free. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration considers them a gluten-free grain under its gluten-free labeling regulations and only requires that packaged products with oats as an ingredient contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten overall.

Are Nature Valley Bars Healthy

Made with real ingredients such as whole grain oats and with no artificial sweeteners, no artificial food coloring, and no high fructose corn syrup it is easy to assume that these bars are healthy. However, like many packaged treats we want to be mindful of the amount of total sugar in each serving. While sugar is not inherently bad, too much of it can lead to adverse health issues.

Most Nature Valley bars have anywhere from 7-11g of added sugar. Over-consuming sugar in your diet can lead to problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance. According to the American Heart Association the average adult female should consume about 24g of added sugar a day and the average adult male should consume around 36g of sugar a day. With 11g of added sugar it is easy to see how Nature Valley bars can add up and contribute to about half of the average womans allotted daily sugar values.

But enjoying a Nature Valley Bar every now and then can be fine when paired with a high nutrient-dense diet and an active lifestyle.

The Dietitians List Of Low Fodmap Protein Bars

For people with IBS, the protein aisle can be pretty intimidating. There are certainly no shortage of bars to choose from, but finding one that has the right taste, texture, and complies with the low FODMAP diet can be tricky. To make matters worse, most bars have tons of ingredients and additives, making label reading a pain in the you-know-what. The following article aims to simplify this process by providing a number of great-tasting, low FODMAP protein bar options. Along the way, Ill also give you a list of common ingredients found in high FODMAP bars, so you can read labels with more confidence.

On a personal note

Protein bars can easily be a high FODMAP bomb. I can recall several times in my life before I became FODMAP aware when I had to leave work due to severe gut issues after eating a low carb protein bar. In later years, I learned that sugar alcohols and inulin are major triggers, and I avoid both by all means to this day. Hopefully, this article saves you from suffering this same angst.

Which Nature Valley Bars Are Not Gluten Free

While the Nature Valley Oats N Honey Crunchy Bars appear to be gluten free, in reality they are not because they contain oats.

While oats are technically naturally gluten free, they are highly cross contaminated with gluten during the growing, harvesting, and manufacturing processes. In fact, one study found that 109 out of 134 commercial oat products contained mixtures of wheat, barley and rye. You can read more about oats and why theyre not always considered gluten free in my article, Are Oats Gluten Free?

Another confusing aspect of the Nature Valley label is its contains or may contains statements. Companies are required by law to disclose if a product contains any of the top eight allergens, including wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, milk and eggs.

Nature Valleys label says it contains soy, and may contain peanut, almond and pecan ingredients. But it says nothing about wheat. Truth be told, the label absolutely should say may contain wheat as well.

Because the contains statement doesnt say may contain wheat, many gluten-free eaters think its safe to consume, but its not safe at all.

I also independently tested the Nature Valley Bars with my Nima Sensor, a portable gluten-detecting device. Nima found gluten, offering yet another proof-point that these crunchy bars are not gluten-free safe.

Please note that the Nature Valley Fruit & Nut Bars and the Sweet and Salty Nut Bars also are NOT gluten free .
