All About Gluten Free Beers

Ah yes gluten free clay and lang gum

Beer used to never be gluten free. Luckily, many craft brewers and even big breweries like Anheuser-Busch are now offering special gluten free beer. Most are brewed from alternative grains like sorghum and millet, so are considered naturally gluten free beers.

There is another category of beer that is called gluten-removed or gluten-reduced these beers are made from barley in the traditional brew-making style, and are not allowed to be labeled as gluten-free in the U.S., although local state laws may differ when the beers are not crossing state lines.

Experts caution against celiacs and those with gluten sensitivity drinking these beers, since its unclear whether they are truly gluten freeenough to be safe.

One of my articles for Gluten Free & More Magazine covered all the latest entrants to the gluten-free beer market, and another on the issue of de-glutenized or gluten-reduced beers.

I mention this only because there is so much misinformation out there, particularly on the issue of the safety of gluten-reduced beers for celiacs, that I want to emphasize that the information in this article is highly researched. Please feel free to share with others who may be confused about which beers are indeed gluten-free.

Scroll down to the Gluten Removed Beers section to read more about how these beers are treated to reduce gluten and the controversy over whether they are actually safe for celiacs.

Is Gin A Spirit Or A Liqueur

Gin is classified as a spirit because it is made by distilling alcohol.

Liqueurs are typically made by infusing alcohol with flavorings like fruits, herbs, or spices.

Gin is sometimes flavored with botanical ingredients like juniper berries, but it does not contain enough sugar to be considered a liqueur.

Why You Should Not Drink Gin

Is Bombay Sapphire Gluten Free

There are several reasons why you should not drink gin.

Firstly, gin is very high in alcohol content, typically around 40%. This means that it can cause intoxication more quickly than other alcoholic beverages.

Additionally, gin is often flavored with juniper berries, which can have a diuretic effect.

This can lead to dehydration and increased urination, which can be especially problematic for people who are already suffering from dehydration.

Finally, gin can also have a negative impact on blood sugar levels, which can be dangerous for people with diabetes. Consequently, it is important to be aware of the potential risks before consuming gin.

Expert Opinions On Gin And Gluten

Gin most frequently is made from the gluten grains wheat, barley, and rye, along with corn . Gin is distilled, and mostbut not allexperts say distilled spirits made with gluten grains should be safe on the gluten-free diet.

The idea is that even if the alcohol starts out as a mixture of gluten grains, distillation should remove the harmful proteins that cause reactions in celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. Distillation actually vaporizes the pure alcohol, separating it from the non-alcoholic components of the grain mixture used to make that particular type of spirit.

For a New Classic: Cranberry Pine Twist

Why I Love It: Who doesnt love a gin and tonic at Christmas? Its one of the nations favourite drinks for good reason. The cocktail is just so delicious and drinkable, and I love with festive twist on the classic with the additional of a pine spring and some fresh cranberries. It takes a few minutes to make, but the touch of pine really adds a fancy, festive feel to the drink to impress guests.

The Idea: For me, no gin and tonic is complete without some delicious nibbles to enjoy alongside. Try making your own festive honey-roasted nuts to accompany the drink by baking a mixture of almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts in the oven with unsalted butter, runny honey, smoked paprika and sea salt.

Is Gin & Tonic Vegan And Gluten Free

I dont know about you, but, in these troubling times, I find comfort in the minutiae of life. Theres nothing like disappearing down a rabbit hole of information to escape reality.

At the moment, my mind is often preoccupied with thinking about new recipes for The Allergy Brothers Cakes. I am wondering if it is possible to make a vegan and gluten free gin and tonic cake Not for the Allergy Brothers themselves, they are a bit young! Maybe for all the parents contemplating the school summer holidays? The obvious first question is is gin and tonic vegan and gluten free?

Gin is, according to the Oxford Dictionary, a clear alcoholic spirit distilled from grain or malt and flavoured with juniper berries. Grain and malt doesnt sound very gluten free. However, as the gluten proteins are removed during the distillation process, all spirits, unless a gluten-containing ingredient is added after distillation, are gluten free. However, some very, very sensitive individuals might react to gin distilled from grain and malt. In the UK, Chases gin is made from an apple base, and not grain. However, gin is gluten free enough to get a thumbs up from the Coeliac UK website so I feel confident with sticking with my old favourite, Bombay Sapphire.

Phew! Gin and tonic is vegan and gluten free! I think I might have a glass to celebrate. Purely, for research, of course.

The Bottle Is Not A Tiny Fire Hydrant

Five gluten

Sure, we see a reasonable visual resemblance, but the Tanqueray bottle wasnt based on a fire hydrant. The bottle was actually, and carefully, modeled after a cocktail shaker, a marketing attempt at aligning the strangely assertive flavors of English gin with the more approachable, mutable flavors of the American cocktail scene. When Tanqueray 10 launched in 2000, the company used a similar shape but added a not uncool retro citrus reamer vibe to play up the aforementioned citrus.

Nolets Reserve: The Most Expensive Gin

Everything about Nolets Reserve gin is superior. The entire goal of the distillery is to create the very best, from the exclusive high quality, invaluable ingredients, to the tiny production and minuscule allocation.

This modern gin is distilled at a higher ABV than usual, too, at 52.3% compared to a standard of between 40-48%. Despite the number, its an easy-to-drink gin thats smooth and round throughout. Its high price point comes mostly from its use of saffron, which is more expensive per ounce than gold and isnt used sparingly in Nolets distillation process.

The saffron also gives Nolets Reserve its slightly tinted amber colouring and warm, deep spice flavour. Unsurprisingly, its a gin with plenty of depth, balancing bitter notes like verbena with florals like Turkish rose and lavender.

Only a few hundred bottles of Nolets are produced each year, overseen by master distiller Carolus Nolet Sr. Each bottle is also personally numbered and signed by the master distiller before its sold. Its a wonderful, complex gin created to be sipped.
