How To Make Vegan Frosting For These Gluten Free Oreos
Making the vegan frosting for these gluten free oreos is SIMPLE. All you need are four ingredients: vegan butter, vegan powdered sugar, vanilla and plant-based milk. You will need a Kitchen Aid mixer or a hand mixer to beat the butter and the rest of the ingredients into smooth, velvety goodness.
You start with the vegan butter. Beat it until it has broken down and softened. Then, with the mixer still running on medium speed, add the powdered sugar . As the sugar and butter combine, the texture should start to clump together, but be nowhere smooth. Keep that mixer going, and then add the vanilla and the milk. Boom. Run that mixer on high for a minute or so, until a thick and glossy icing has formed. Once the icing is done, if your vegan oreo cookies arent quite ready to be iced, place the icing in the fridge to hold form.

I used a piping bag to dollop the icing on the cookies but you dont have to. I used 1 heaping teaspoon of icing for each cookie but the proportion is totally up to you. Whether you are a double stuffed kind of person or a classic thin layer of icing person, its your call. If you are using a piping bag, I used a 1M Wilton piping tip. Dollop that icing on one cookie and place the other cookie on top to sandwich the icing in.
These dairy free oreos do need some time in the freezer to help the icing set between the two cookies. But they dont need much time to thaw before you can bite into them.

Oreo Cookies has announced on account that as of January 2021, they will offer two types of gluten-free cookies wherever Oreos are sold. The varieties, OREO Gluten-Free cookies and OREO Double Stuf Gluten-Free, will serve as permanent additions to the Oreo portfolio.
In a statement acquired by Food & Wine, Oreo explained that they are “always looking to welcome more people to experience the playfulness of Oreo cookies. We have been planning the launch of our Gluten-Free cookies for some time and are excited to give more fans the opportunity to experience the playfulness of Oreo cookies beginning in January 2021.” To ensure that these gluten-free Oreos are truly gluten-free, Oreo has had their new products certified by the Gluten-Free Certification Authority which, as FoodBeast writes, despite its lack of authority has a harsher gluten-free definition than either the FDA or the EU.
While the rationale behind this push may be to appeal to the ongoing trendiness of gluten-free products, a fad Food & Wine begin their piece by noting, the real beneficiaries of these unveiling are those with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity three demographics described by Stanford University’s The Dish on Science as people “who actually need gluten free.” So now they too can enjoy what Delish once reported as the world’s best-selling cookie, showing a more profound shift from the days when gluten-free snacks were near impossible to find.

How Thick Should The Pancake Batter Be
The most important logistical issue in making gluten free fried Oreos successfully is getting the texture of the pancake batter just right. The frying oil temperature is important, too, but you can measure that objectively at 350°F.

Why This Recipe Is Special
File this recipe squarely under if-they-can-make-it-with-gluten-we-can-make-it-without. Its the crispy fried treats, sure. But its also the sense of possibility, which means to me that this recipe is useful even if you never, ever make it.
Fried Oreos werent a thing in NY when I was growing up, so I had only heard of them as Midwest county fair food. But according to my children, theyre sold at the town pool snack stand, so theyre everywhere now.
Now my teenage gluten free son is very self-conscious of his dietary restriction . So when he asks me if I can make gluten free fried Oreos, youd better believe Im going to deliver.
It turns out that the crisp outside, tender inside and melty chocolate sandwich cookie inside in a fried Oreo is not half bad. And thats important, too.
Keep in mind that the sandwich cookies will melt inside during frying. If youd like a firmer cookie, just allow the treats to cool for about 10 minutes after frying, and theyll firm back upbut try at least one fresh out of the fryer.
Homemade Oreo Filling Options
Sandwich the crispy gluten-free chocolate wafers with your choice of vanilla or peppermint buttercream. Once winter rolls around, I’m a peppermint fanatic.
To get in the holiday spirit, I use peppermint and vanilla extracts to flavor the filling. The result is a cross between an Oreo and a Thin Mint. Start with a small splash of peppermint extract, taste, and adjust, being careful not to turn your filling into toothpaste territory. The Glutino Chocolate Vanilla Creme Sandwich Cookies are currently my go-to sandwich cookies for a gluten-free OREO substitution. However, as you can see on their review page, consumer complaints have been high over the new recipe of the cookie. The texture isnt perfect theyre thick and sturdy , but Ive been happily purchasing them as they were the only easy-to-find substitute for OREO-like cookies on gluten-free shelves. Theyre easy to find, pretty affordable, and I think taste the most like OREO sandwich cookies apart from actual OREOs. Also, I LOVE their vanilla sandwich cookie version so I wont stop buying those varieties for something different.

Tips For Making Homemade Gluten
These gluten-free Oreos are incredibly easy to make.
Roll the dough out and use a cutter to cut out the wafers just like you would for sugar cookies. Cut the cookies as close together, re-roll and cut out more. The goal is to cut most of the cookies out on the first and second roll.
You can certainly roll the dough out a third or fourth time, but the cookies will get ever so slightly more dense.
As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, use the bottom of a glass to press each cookie down ever so slightly on the baking sheet. This will smooth out the tops and help hold the cookies together so they won’t crumble as easily.
Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for at least five minutes before transferring to a wire rack. That little extra cool on the baking sheet will help the cookies firm up so they won’t fall apart when you try to move them.
After piping the frosting, pop the finished homemade Oreos in the fridge for 10 minutes to let the filling firm up before devouring. These homemade gluten-free Oreos will keep in the fridge for a week or on the counter for 2-3 days. You can eat them right out of the fridge, but I recommend bringing them to room temperature before serving.
