Eating Vegan On The Gluten

Use this practical advice and information to healthfully eat vegetarian or vegan on the gluten-free diet

Everywhere you look, it seems meat is back. The average American will eat more than 222 pounds of red meat and poultry in 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , which also expects sales of eggs, cheese and butter to hit all-time highs. Popular diets, including Paleo and keto, lead some to think that a diet based on high consumption of meat could afford even more health benefits.

For others, however, the decision to leave meat and other animal products behind is a personal one and may be rooted in concerns for the welfare and treatment of animals, worries about food safety or religious beliefs. Others believe that a meat-heavy lifestyle isnt good for long-term health and that a plant-based diet can help prevent chronic disease and improve longevity.

For those who combine a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle with the gluten-free diet, food choices require careful planning to avoid nutritional deficiencies. Also, many processed vegetarian products, such as veggie burgers, often contain gluten, so label reading is critical. In this edition of Not Just Gluten Free, well discuss the potential health benefits of vegetarianism, how to combine the vegetarian diet and gluten-free diet, address nutritional concerns, and navigate challenges in living both gluten free and vegetarian or vegan.

What Does Certified Gluten Free Mean

The FDA is responsible for regulating the manufacture, marketing, and distribution of food products to ensure public health and safety. As such, they play a role in determining the definitions of words used on food labels and regulating their use. This doesnt mean, however, that they are the only organization allowed to do so. In fact, there are a number of other organizations out there that offer certifications for food products.

Here are a few examples:

  • Certified Naturally Grown
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch
  • NSF International
  • USDA Organic
  • Crossed Grain Trademark

In addition to these organizations, there are also three programs which offer certification for gluten free foods: The Gluten Intolerance Groups Gluten-Free Certification Organization , the Celiac Support Association , and the Allergen Control Group. Each of these groups has its own tests and standards for the levels of trace gluten they will allow. Here is a quick overview:

  • Gluten-Free Certification Organization This group requires tested foods to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, though many foods contain less or even no detectable traces of gluten.
  • Celiac Support Association This group requires tested foods to contain less than 5ppm of gluten they also require that foods be free from oats, even gluten free oats.
  • Allergen Control Group This group requires tested foods to contain less than 20 ppm of gluten and it is endorsed by Beyond Celiac as the Gluten-Free Certification Program .

Gluten And Celiac Disease

Unfortunately gluten plays havoc with some peoples digestive systems. This is especially true of people diagnosed with celiac disease, who should treat gluten as if its poison and avoid even the tiniest amounts. Among celiacs, gluten produces an allergic response that inflames the intestines and bowels. With repeated exposure to gluten, the lining of these organs breaks down, causing serious and potentially life-threatening consequences.

Like Crohns disease and rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease is an autoimmune disordermeaning that the body is attacked by its own immune system. But if youre going to suffer the misfortune of contracting an autoimmune disorder, celiac disease is clearly the best one to have. Thats because celiacs can avoid any problems simply by banishing all traces of gluten from their diet. And while that restriction is certainly a drag, countless people with more serious ailments would be delighted to trade places with you.

Seitan Is Satan To Those Avoiding Gluten

Our dedicated article about seitan tells you everything you need to know about this excellent vegan meat substitute. We say excellent but for anyone who is looking to avoid gluten that is definitely not the appropriate word. Seitan is made from vital wheat gluten and this itself is made by washing away starch and other substances from wheat flour so what is left is more or less pure gluten.

Whilst seitan is often made with flavourings and seasonings as well, the vast majority of its mass is pure gluten, making this one vegan item that is absolutely not suitable for those on a gluten free diet.

Vegan Doesnt Mean Perfect

As the examples weve just reviewed make clear, many vegan foods involve abhorrent farming practices. Its therefore tempting to redefine vegan in a way that excludes any and all exploitation of humans and wildlife.

Unfortunately, gaining consensus on such a redefinition would prove impossible, and the attempt quickly renders the word useless. Revoking the vegan status of crops farmed in particularly unethical ways would require everyone to agree on where to draw the line. Some people might only want to exclude uncertified palm oil, while others would demand exclusion of dozens more food crops. The word vegan would become meaningless, since nobody could agree on the criteria establishing which foods merit inclusion.

Flexible Definitions Save Animals

Many animal advocates dont want to merely reduce animal sufferingthey want to eliminate it outright. They therefore commonly define veganism in the most rigid possible terms. But imposing onerous standards, especially upon newcomers, can needlessly repel people. Animal byproducts will automatically disappear as we transition toward a vegan world, as one slaughterhouse after another shuts down. For that to happen, we must talk about veganism in ways that motivate the majority of people to shift their diets towards plants.

To push vegan lifestyles into the mainstream, we must strive to avoid saying things that scare people off. That means discussing the topic in ways that entice and encourage. I often use the foot-in-the-door technique, which seeks to convince people to make a small but immediate change in a vegan direction. Even the tiniest concession today often leads to much bigger changes tomorrow.

What could be more counterproductive than imposing aggressive demands on brand new vegans? Newcomers need to focus on the big picture: ridding their diets of meat, eggs, and dairy products. Those commitments can feel overwhelming at first. Must we require new vegans to immediately purge their closets of leather shoes, or to worry about the fourteenth ingredient of their shampoo?

Can Vegans Eat Gluten Plus What Is Gluten

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant and the server assumed that being vegan is the same as being gluten-free? Or, have you ordered the vegan option and have been asked: Can vegans eat gluten?

In a time when wellness is important to many, you can forgive people who assume that eating vegan is the same as eating gluten-free. Its also a very good question considering just how many different dietary requirements we have these days. Additionally, its a serious topic considering how it can affect someones health and wellbeing if ignored.

Do vegans eat gluten? Mostly, yes.

Can vegans eat gluten? Yes, gluten is vegan because it isnt derived from animals. However, lets take a step back and try to understand exactly what a vegan diet is and what a gluten-free diet is. Then we can get into the nitty gritty and answer the following questions.

Moving Beyond The Vegan Concept

What Does a Life-Long Vegan Eat in a Day? // Quick Vegan and Gluten Free Eats

As weve seen, veganism cant address every ethical concern regarding food. Nevertheless, if you want to eat in the least harmful manner, a vegan diet deserves strong consideration. You can always go beyond the vegan concept when warranted. For instance, vegan chocolate protects cows, whereas fair-trade vegan chocolate protects cows and people.

Practically all vegans oppose exploitative methods of food production, even when the item in question happens to be vegan. For the most problematic vegan foods, superior alternatives nearly always exist. Sometimes itll be a sustainably grown version of the food, and sometimes itll be another choice entirely. Your food may end up costing more, since fair-trade certified foods and the like invariably carry a premium. But overall, it takes minimal effort and expense to better align your food purchases with your values.

Crops grown or harvested in odious ways are best regarded as vegan yet utterly objectionable. Although food production operates under enormously complex ethical realities, we can keep the definition of vegan clear and straight-forward. Simply going vegan doesnt solve every problem related to food. But its a perfect starting point. Veganism gives us a solid foundation while we work individually and collectively to rid our food system of its remaining injustices.

Which Grains Are Gluten

Luckily, there are plenty of gluten-free grain varieties, which celiacs can eat to their hearts content:

  • wild rice
  • teff

Note that many celiacs react to even trace amounts of gluten. People with extreme gluten sensitivity must take extreme measures. They commonly must avoid food made at facilities that store or process any gluten containing grains.

What Does The Fda Say About Gluten Free Foods

In August 2013, the Food and Drug Administration announced a new rule for gluten free food labeling. According to this rule, manufacturers that want to label their food gluten free must comply with the FDAs new definition of the term. In order to comply with this definition, the product in question must contain less than 20 parts per million of gluten. There is no rule that foods must be labeled gluten free and there is no restriction on which foods can carry the label even naturally gluten free foods like fresh produce or water.

Here are a few quick things you should know about the FDAs gluten free food labeling rule:

  • This rule applies to all FDA-regulated foods as well as dietary supplements and imported foods subject to FDA regulation.
  • The rule doesnt apply to meat, poultry, and unshelled eggs as well as distilled spirits and wines made with 7% alcohol by volume or more.
  • Food products may be labeled gluten free if:
  • They do not contain wheat, barley, or rye, OR
  • They do not contain an ingredient derived from a gluten-containing grain that hasnt been processed to remove gluten, OR
  • They do not contain an ingredient derived from a gluten-containing grain that hasnt been processed to remove gluten if it results in 20 ppm of gluten or more.
  • Products that are naturally gluten free can be labeled gluten free.
  • Oats may be labeled gluten free if they contain 20ppm of gluten or less they do not need to be certified gluten free.
