    Bobs Red Mill is a brand many people in the gluten-free community know and trust because the company makes many gluten-free products.

    Bobs Red Mill does not use purity protocol oats instead relying on a combination of purity oats and optically-sorted oats to meet demand for its products. Bobs Red Mill oats are not certified gluten free either.

    I took pause when I learned early on in my celiac disease life that Bobs Red Mill oats were neither purity oats nor third-party gluten-free certified. How could this be? Could someone with celiac disease safely consume Bobs Red Mill gluten-free oats?

    Its easy to assume no and shut down the conversation based on what I have said so far, and many people have jumped to this conclusion.

    However, Ive done a lot of digging into this topic, and know there is more than meets the eye when it comes to the Bobs Red Mill brand. Bottom line, Bobs Red Mill makes gluten-free oats safe for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities to consume. Heres why:

    Batch Testing: Bobs Red Mill says its oats are batch tested before, during, and after processing using an ELISA Gluten Assay. The Gluten ELISA is a quantitative test able to detect low levels of gluten in food ingredients and in prepared and processed foods and beverages.

    This means Bobs Red Mill batch tests its oats upon delivery, during production, and after packaging to ensure they contain less than 20 ppm of gluten in any given batch.

    And to touch on the Quaker Oats subject, tons of people that are brand new to being gluten-free may not think that Quaker Oats are not gluten-free.     The first reason why is Quaker supplier also grows wheat, barley, rye and other gluten-containing grains on the same fields that they grow the oats. So how convenient is that? Im pretty sure theyre doing that to save money.

    Even some of Quaker rice cakes are not gluten-free. So make sure youre not picking up rice cake that is not specifically labeled gluten-free.

    Can People With Celiacs Eat All Oats

    There’s some evidence that certain types of oats may be less toxic to people with celiac disease than others. A Spanish study looked at how components of the immune system reacted to the different oat varieties in people with celiac. That study found some types of oats provoked less of an immune system response than others.

    And an Italian study used cell samples from people with celiac to see how those cells reacted to different oat varieties in test tubes. The study concluded that two oat varietiesAvena genziana and Avena potenzadidn’t provoke major celiac-specific immune system reactions, at least in the test tube.

    But the researchers cautioned that both oat varieties did seem to cause some low-level immune system changes in the cell samples. Research on all of this is ongoing, but it’s too early to single out particular oat varieties as safer or less safe for us to eat.

    Tested Quaker Oats For Gluten

    Actually right after this video, I will show you a test of me testing Quaker Oats at 20 parts per million twice. What I did was I picked up a package of Quaker Oats, tested it twice from two different samples, two different tests. They both tested positive for gluten at 20 parts per million.

    So Quaker Oats are never safe. Dont try to save a dime and purchase Quaker Oats instead of gluten-free oats or something like that. Its not very smart.
