Concerning Ingredients In Pillsbury Puff Pastry

Although the Pillsbury Puff Pastry has fewer concerning ingredients when compared to its biggest competitor Pepperidge Farm, we still find palm and soybean oil.

Palm oil is a concern for some vegans due to unethical practices used in production.

Soybean oil is Genetically Modified and is heavily sprayed with pesticides.

Rolling Out Your Pastry

This is where the fun starts – it’s time to make those lovely layers!

The layers in puff pastry are achieved by simply rolling and folding the pastry in a certain way.

However, as I said before, this relies on the pastry being cold so if your dough warms up at any point, just pop it back in the fridge.

The making of this gluten free puff pastry is really quite simple, it just takes patience more than anything.

Remove your pastry from the fridge and generously dust the work surface with gluten free flour.

Place the dough in the centre and use your hands to flatten the dough into a rectangular shape, like this:

Then, with the short end nearest you, roll the pastry out in one direction into a long rectangle.

You want it to be approximately 1cm thick .

Use your hands to keep shaping the pastry into a rectangle as you roll, so that you have reasonably straight edges.

Your rolled out rectangle should look like this, with the long ends approximately double the length of the short ends.

List Of Vegan Puff Pastry Brands

This post answers a pretty simple question: Can you buy vegan puff pastry? I researched the ingredients to 34 puff pastry products to get a full picture of what you need to avoid and be aware of. So is store-bought puff pastry vegan??

Most puff pastry brands are vegan. Out of 34 puff pastry products analyzed, 28 were vegan. The animal ingredients found in the non-vegan products included: Butter , L-cysteine , and egg .

Below, Ill share the breakdown of each puff pastry brand, including lists of vegan options by country, plus gluten-free vegan puff pastry options!

What It’s Made Of

The puff pastry normally sold in stores contains milk, but confirmed vegan products only use plant-based ingredients. They use yellow pea flour for the dough and sometimes substitute it with maize starch or rice bran. Instead of butter, they use vegetable oils or vegetable oil-based margarine.

Depending on your preference, there are various flours that you can use if you are looking for a specific texture. You can also mix it with an all-purpose pastry mix that is free from animal products and, of course, dairy-free as well.

Yes, you can make puff pastry at home. All you need are basic ingredients for the dough and look for fatty acids that can be plant-based if you prefer to go vegan. The typical Parisian croissant uses pampas shortcrust, which is vegan, and that is something you can try out.

What Temperature Is The Best To Bake Puff Pastry

The temperature at which to bake puff pastry will vary by recipe, but it is generally best to bake puff pastry at a high temperature for at least 10 minutes for the best results.

The higher temperature will allow the butter to melt quickly and release steam, creating the signature layers in puff pastry.

The pastry can fall flat at lower temperatures, resulting in a tough texture. Always preheat the oven, and avoid opening the door while the pastry is cooking.

Is Puff Pastry Healthy

Traditional puff pastry is a high-calorie-dense food and composes around 8% of the daily recommended intake of 2000 calories. In addition, puff pastry is high in fat and carbohydrates. Like many baked goods, puff pastry is used for desserts, pies, tarts, and recipes that are recommended to eat in moderation. However, vegan puff pastry is the ideal option if you are health conscious.

Vegan puff pastry does not contain butter from cows milk. Butter is around 80% fat and is made by separating whole milk or cream into fat which is then chilled as blocks of butter.

If you are gluten-free, puff pastry uses flour or enriched wheat flour so it is not gluten-free. There are gluten-free puff pastry options available but be sure to check the ingredients on the gluten-free recipe as it may contain eggs. The best choice is to look for a vegan and gluten-free puff pastry.

Why Isnt My Gluten Free Pastry Dough Puffing Up

Gluten Free Nutella Puff Pastry Bites

If your puff pastry isnt rising into flaky layers in the oven, the butter most likely wasnt properly distributed throughout the dough. That can happen for many reasons, but the most common is that it melted during preparation, so melted into the dough, rather than being layered alternately, and kept cold.

Vegan Puff Pastry Recipe

Making vegan puff pastry from scratch is easy using this fool-proof cheat method. Enjoy some crispy, flaky goodness in half the time it takes to make traditional puff pastry!

Homemade vegan puff pastry is much cheaper than storebought, and it only requires four ingredients.

Traditional pastry dough is made by encasing a slab of butter in a basic dough made from flour, water, butter, and salt.

This method for this recipe was adapted from Paul Hollywoods rough puff pastry recipe. Using frozen instead of chilled vegan butter allows more time to roll and fold the dough without chilling too many times.

Schar Gluten Free Puff Pastry Dough

List of Vegan Puff Pastry Brands [34 Products Analyzed]

A post shared by Erica on Jul 25, 2018 at 11:47am PDT

I was so excited to finally get my hands on some, thanks to our Anniversary sponsor Schar! Unfortunately, we still dont have it here it Arizona, but plenty of readers have spotted it in their frozen foods section across the USA!

However, being a celiac forEVER I didnt even know what to make with puff pastry dough. I hadnt used gluten-free puff pastry dough since being diagnosed. What was I going to make with it? Of course I went to and YouTube to explore. I found this Tasty video and decided to experiment with a few on Schars new puff pastry dough.

Its pretty easy to make these elaborate looking pastries honestly! Now, gluten-free puff pastry dough is a little more difficult to work with , but with a little bowl of water and some patience, you can really nail gluten-free puff pastry recipes! Just make sure you defrost the puff pastry dough for at least 3 hours. Unroll it slowly and carefully and mend any cracks with a little bit of water and your finger. Then, cut the dough using a pizza cutter or knife into squares or the shapes you need for each pastry. Carefully fold the dough, working out any tears with a little water and your finger. Add on the toppings and fillings before you put into the pre-heated oven. Make sure to follow the instructions for baking on the box! Pinwheels like these take a shorter amount of time than more intricate designs so dont burn them!

Tip 1 Use Frozen Pastry Within 24hrs Of Buying

This ones really simple, although you might think it kind of weird. Tip number one is to use your pastry when its fresh. Now, I can hear you saying, Stacey, its frozen. That kind of defeats the purpose.. And while I hear you, and I totally get it, trust me on this one.

When you buy a packet of frozen pastry from the shelf in your supermarket, who knows how long its been sitting there for. Then you take it home and whack it in your freezer. How long are you going to leave it there for until you might decide to use it? So my hot tip is to use your pastry within 24 hours of getting it home. I know, thats short but when I started doing this, it made the biggest difference to not only the usability, but the end product. My sausage rolls and pastry cases were lighter, they were flakier, and overall, it was much easier to work with.

Whats The Secret To Perfect Puff Pastry

Theres one absolutely, completely vital trick to making sure your gluten free puff pastry works.

Keep. It. Cold.

Nothing complicated just pure temperature!

If your puff pastry dough gets too hot, the butter in those lovely layers your creating will begin to melt.

If the butter melts, youll lose those layers. No layers = no puff.

Youll just end up with a tough-as-old-boots shortcrust pastry which trust me, doesnt taste too great.

The best thing you can remember is: if in double, refrigerate.

Making gluten free puff pastry is definitely easier on a colder day.

In fact, if its really cold you may even be able to do the whole thing without having to stop and refrigerate the dough once.

But as soon as it starts to warm up, youll need to chill the pastry in the fridge .

This way itll stay super cold and you wont need to worry about losing those layers youre working so hard to create.

So if its a warm day, prepare to have lots of pauses to chill your dough between folds. Trust me, itll be worth it!

Can I Use Coconut Oil Instead Of Vegan Butter

Coconut oil melts or softens much easier than vegan butter. The fat remaining as cold as possible before cooking is essential to creating perfect layers in puff pastry. Coconut oil will not produce the desired results.

Stick-style vegan butter or margarine will make the best and most consistent results, as it has less water content than the spreadable type and will result in the flakiest layers.
