The Best Homemade Vegan Burger Buns

How To Make Gluten-free Vegan Burger Buns & Pizza Crust | Easy | Korenn Rachelle

The barbecue and grilling season is just around the corner and of course vegan burger buns cant be missing! While you can buy ready-made hamburger buns in the supermarket, they cant compete with freshly baked, fluffy homemade burger buns! If you want to eat a really tasty vegan burger, you should definitely make this easy, super soft brioche bun recipe at home. Whether youre grilling with your family and friends or enjoying them with pan-fried vegan burger pattiesat a cozy TV night, this recipe will make a super delicious fast food meal for you and your beloved ones!

Use Beans Sunflower Mince Lentils Veggies Whatever You Like To Make This Vegan Burger Recipe

Once you get the basic ingredients needed for these vegan burger patties, you can create your own version by using whatever you have in your pantry! I used a combination of kidney beans and sunflower mince here which is not only quick and easy to prepare but also ensures the best vegan burger texture ever! What I also love about the sunflower mice is, that its soy-free, grain-free, gluten-free, low-fat, and protein-rich!

Feel free to use the discount code bianca10 for ordering the 6-pack sunflower mince or orders that are total above £22 in the wholesozo online-shop!

Alternatively, feel free to use mushrooms, cooked rice, quinoa, potatoes, soy protein, legumes like lentils, or simply add more beans instead to make the patties. You can also try adding additional nuts like walnuts or veggies like carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, red peppers, or sweet potato for more flavor!

Regarding beans, feel free to use whatever variety you want in the recipe, such as black beans for black bean veggie burgers, or kidney, pinto, or regular white beans. Then season with dry spices or fresh herbs, whatever you like!

How To Store Leftover Homemade Burger Buns

Freshly baked buns taste best, because they are super soft and fluffy while theyre still a little warm. You can store them in an airtight container or freezer bags for up to 3 days. When you want to eat them, you can toast or bake them up briefly. If they become too hard, simply heat them up for a few seconds in the microwave this will make the burger buns softer again!

The best way to freeze leftover vegan burger buns, however, is to place them individually in freezer bags or airtight containers immediately after they have cooled after baking. When you want to use them, simply let them thaw in your pantry for a few hours. Then you only have to toast or bake them up briefly and they will taste like freshly baked again!

Can I Use Baking Powder Instead

I have used baking powder in making these buns before. The texture still came out just as great. However, I kept the yeast in there simply because of the flavor that it has to add.

If you are using baking powder, do not allow them to rise for more than 20 minutes before baking because the baking powder will eventually loose its ability to allow the buns to rise.

Can I Make Any Variations To This Recipe

Soft gluten

Im all for experimenting I actively encourage people to take my recipes as a guide then make them their own.

There are a few caveats to that though

  • Dont try the recipe with other flour blends. If you dont understand about gluten free flour then please read this article so you dont waste any more of your time!

If you live outside the UK and cant buy my flour blend then check out my online gluten free baking courses. I share the recipe for the flour blend in them enabling you to make all of my recipes where-ever you are in the world.

  • Dont adjust the amount of liquid in the recipe. You can vary the liquid but not the amount
  • I wouldnt suggest using xanthan gum instead of psyllium husk powder. It might work but I havent tried it.
  • If youre using psyllium husk, rather than psyllium husk powder then youll need twice as much husk to powder. I always use powder in my recipes.

In terms of additions I suggest trying dry additions such as herbs, sundried tomatoes, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, spices and the like.

Let me know what you add.

Ive made some delicious sweet buns by adding a little extra sugar along with cinnamon and raisins. Very yummy when split open and toasted like a tea cake!

Shape With Plenty Of Extra Flour

In this sort of recipe, I prefer to start with a wet dough. Its more difficult to shape and handle, but you can flour the dough generously during shaping without drying it out too much.

Just handle the dough with a light touch, and even a higher quantity of extra flour wont incorporate into the center of the dough where it will stifle the yeast.

Soft Gluten Free Hamburger Buns And Diy Gluten Free Flour Mix

Healthy Gluten-Free (Hamburger) Buns | Vegan and Yeast-Free

pfffft year

After my son was diagnosed as being allergic to wheat, eggs, etc., I started using King Arthur Gluten Free Bread mix without using eggs. I loved the bread. This is the only mix that really tastes and acts like a wheat bread. The only down side was how expensive it is. At close to $8 a box, it just became too expensive for an everyday bread. I based this recipe on their bread.

I cant tell you just how good these are. They are soft and springy. They dont fall apart with slicing. They dont disintegrate into a pile of crumbs in your mouth. These will even last up to a week, without drying out! This is all thanks to the powdered pectin. The pectin acts as a binder and holds a ton of moisture without becoming gummy. My new gluten free flour mix also contains less starch and more protein and fiber to combat gumminess.

At first glance the moisture ratio may seem a bit much. And without the pectin this will not work, trust me. The dough/batter is extremely thin, almost soup like without any of the gum or pectin added. I tried this technique to help the flour absorb more moisture by giving it more time with just liquid and no gum. Once you add the gum and pectin it will thicken up quickly and become difficult to stir. If you have a stand mixer you could save your arms a little work. But I would not suggest trying to use a hand mixer since it will burn out your motor.

The Steamy Secret To A Toasty Brown Crust

These gluten-free buns bake best with the help of steam! That is the key to getting them to brown on the outside with a crusty exterior without risk of cracks or drying out. Place a large pan filled halfway with water on the rack underneath your bread before you preheat your oven, and that will create steam on all sides of the buns as they bake.

I love these vegan gluten-free buns by themselves warm from the oven, toasted with jam the next day, or sliced in two and sandwiched with all sorts of veggie fillings like so

  • 1 medium yellow potato
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup brown rice flour
  • 3/4 cup white rice flour
  • 1/3 cup tapioca flour
  • 1 tbsp ground psyllium husk
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda

Do Hamburger Buns Have Eggs

Most hamburger buns do not contain eggs. However, a few buns out there do have eggssuch as those made by Udis and Vermont Bread Company.

It wasnt too surprising that Udis buns contain egg whites, as they focus on gluten-free products. As I covered in my blog post Are There Eggs in Bread? it is quite common for gluten-free bread products to contain egg whites.

Finding eggs in Vermont Bread Company buns was more surprisingbut oh well.

Perfecting The Best Gluten

This recipe was created after lots of trial and error, just like my gluten-free cinnamon rolls, gluten-free pie crust, and gluten-free bread were. When a recipe finally works out, itâs so very rewarding.

Our wheat-eating friends, who we get together with regularly, actually prefer the taste and texture of these gluten-free hamburger buns to the gluten-filled ones.

Be Patient But Dont Let It Rise Too Much

If your dough hasnt risen enough after shaping, your kitchen might be rather dry or a bit on the chilly side. Dont worryif youve measured your ingredients properly and youve covered the baking sheet properly, the dough will rise.

If the environment isnt quite right, it will just slow the yeasts activity. Be patient with the rise.

Since this recipe is made in the batter-style , it doesnt rise as smoothly as the recipes made with gluten free bread flour. When conventional bread rises, the gluten creates an invisible netting that traps the rise and keeps the top of the bread taut, like when you pull plastic wrap tightly over a bowl.

Without the gluten or even a super close replacement, in a recipe like this, the top of the dough will become pitted and cratered at the very end of a proper rise. When the craters begin to form, the dough has risen fully and its ready for the egg wash and a spin in a hot oven.
