A Note On Vegetarian Hot Dogs

Let’s Make Homemade Gluten-Free Vegan Hot Dogs!

If you follow a gluten-free diet, avoid vegetarian hot dogs. Many of these hot dogs or sausages contain wheat gluten or wheat protein, which are gluten ingredients.

Im sad to say that eating a vegetarian sausage was one of my defining moments of understanding that I was gluten intolerant. Enjoy a hot dog made with meat or find another food instead if youre trying to avoid meat in your diet.

Recipe: Vegan Hot Dogs With Homemade Seitan Sausages

Where to Find it:Elephantastic Vegan

Why We Love it:These seitan sausages are the perfect hot dog stand-ins and we love the combination of chickpeas, vital wheat gluten and spices to make a flavorful and protein-rich hot dog. Tweaking these spices can make it taste more or less hot dog like depending on what you prefer. We highly recommend serving these with your favorite toppings for a delicious vegan hot dog experience.

Creating Hot Dogs With Whole Food Ingredients

For the base of these vegan gluten free hot dogs I use pumfu!

Pumfu is a soy free tofu made entirely of pumpkin seeds. It has incredible flavor and is a great source of plant based protein. If you are not soy free, you can substitute this with extra firm tofu.

To create a hot dog-like texture, I use rice paper to mimic the casing in which hot dogs and sausages have. It has a very similar texture and is a perfect way to keep the filling in tact!

Using a variety of spices, coconut aminos, tomato paste and coconut sugar to create a similar taste to traditional hot dogs.

Hot dogs are made with all types of processed sugar and have a sort of caramelized flavor so the coconut sugar is a great healthy alternative in this recipe.

  • Refrigerate mixture for four hours, or overnight.
  • Once mixture is chilled, scoop out the mixture into 4-6 equal size portions depending on how big you want.
  • Roll the mixture into hot dog shaped forms. *Preferred method (see post for other options to doing this:Place a scoop onto a piece of wax paper and then, holding two sides, move the sides up and down until it molds into a long log, or hot dog shape. Helping mold when needed.

Can I Make This Top 8 Allergen Friendly Hot Dogs

As the recipe is written for these vegan hot dogs, there is soy in the recipe. The ingredient that contains these is the vegan Worcestershire sauce .

You could also purchase a gluten free version of the worcestershire sauce.

As far as the soy, I havent yet found a vegan version that you can buy that doesnt contain soy however, you could make your own homemade worcestershire sauce, like this one, and replace the soy sauce with a no soy soy free sauce.

It does take work, but it is possible to make these Top 8 Allergy friendly and not sacrifice the flavor that anyone else is able to achieve!

The 9 Best Vegan Hot Dogs That Actually Taste Like The Real Deal

by Vegan Green Living | Oct 29, 2019 | Alternatives, Food 101

Hot dogs tend to be one of those foods that invoke fond memories of childhood and summertime cookouts. They can be comfort food and a really delicious fast and quick option for lunch or dinner and, of course, a great go-to for any barbecue. The problem with hot dogs is that theyre super processed, made from animals and inherently cruel.

Theyre so unhealthy in fact, that The World Health Organization classified them as carcinogens. Hot dogs are considered processed meat and eating one a day was found to increase the risk of colorectal cancer by a whopping 18 percent!

So while hotdogs may hold a special place in many peoples hearts and stomachs, they are not a wise choice to consume if you value your health, the Earth, or the animals that become hot dogs. Thankfully, vegan hot dogs are free of animals and their by-products and are made from plants, making them a fantastic choice for those who want to enjoy hot dogs without the cancer risk and cruelty.

Weve compiled a list of the best vegan hot dogs, from store-bought to recipes, theres a hot dog here for everyone. They all have slightly different tastes and textures and some are a bit more processed than others, so its best to read through the list completely before adding them to your grocery list to see what may be the best choice for you.

  • Naturally made from grains and vegetables
  • Grill on the barbeque, saute in the pan, steam in the oven or microwave

Can I Make These Vegan Hot Dogs In The Oven

Yes! You can definitely make them in the oven however they are a bit more temperamental than in the air fryer. They also dont get as crisp as they do in the air fryer either. For those two reasons, we highly recommend using an air fryer for these vegetarian hot dogs instead of the oven.

However, if you dont have an air fryer, we recommend cooking them for 23-27 minutes in the oven at 350 degrees F on a very well greased pan.

Halfway through making them you are going to want to flip them over. They may stick. If this is the case, we recommend leaving them out and waiting for a few minutes to cool down, then carefully flipping, and returning back to the oven for the remaining cooking time.

What Is The Best Way To Mold These Vegan Hot Dogs

There are a few different ways that you can do this.

One way, would be to purchase silicone hot dog molds. We found that these were on the smaller side and while they were great for our kids, they would leave little to be desired for an adult unless you took two and molded them together after cooking.

Another method is to shape by hand. You will need very well oiled hands and use them to mold into a hot dog like shape before placing in the air fryer on to a baking sheet.

And lastly, our preferred way after making them for a few times is to place a scoop onto a piece of wax paper and then, holding two sides, move the sides up and down until it molds into a long log, or hot dog shape. Helping mold when needed. Then, roll onto the air fryer or baking sheet, depending on which method you are using.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Vegan Hot Dogs

We really love a good, simple recipe with minimal ingredients. While this isnt a hard recipe, it does have a handful of ingredients that are a bit longer than our normal list.

Given that, we really think that you need each of the ingredients to make a delicious vegan hot dog recipe.

Full amounts listed in printable recipe card below.

The ingredients that you need for this recipe are:

As you can see, its quite a list of ingredients. More than half of them are spices though, so that helps know that its not a ton of hard to use ingredients.

What Ingredients Do I Need To Make Homemade Gluten

You make a wet mixture with cooked veggies like Idaho potatoes, beets, sweet potatoes, and carrots.

You can fiddle with the amounts, but you can always add more dry ingredients if you need to.

If you are missing one ingredient you can double up on another. I like to keep with root veggies and ones of those that mash easily.

The beets are the exception because they dont mash smooth, but they add the perfect color!

The dry ingredients add the body and texture to the gluten-free hot dog, and the herbs and spices add the flavor.

  • 1/2 cup brown rice flour
  • 1/2 cup teff or quinoa flour needs to be a high protein flour
  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
