Are Oats And Porridge Gluten Free

When it comes to oats, things are a bit complicated.

Oats are naturally gluten free, but they are often processed in the same places as grains such as wheat and barley, which do contain gluten. This means that oats can become contaminated with other grains, making them not entirely gluten free.

Some oats are processed separate from other grains and tested to ensure there is no very little or no contamination. These oats are labelled as gluten free.

You can buy gluten-free porridge oats. When looking for gluten-free oats, you should make sure they are labelled as gluten free.

Other labels such as 100% oats or pure oats dont tell you whether or not the product contains gluten. Unless the product is explicitly labelled as gluten free, it will probably contain small amounts of gluten.

Popular porridge brands such as Quaker and Scotts usually contain gluten. Quaker now sell a gluten-free variety, but ther other products contain small amounts of gluten.

So What Is Gluten Intolerance

You might already be convinced to give our NESTLÉ GOFREE ® Cereals a try, but if you want to know a bit more about gluten intolerance and what it means, read on

Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, barley and rye. Gluten intolerance refers to the entire category of gluten issues, including coeliac disease and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Symptoms vary from person to person and can include bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and stomach pain. Coeliac disease is the most severe form of gluten intolerance. People with this autoimmune disorder cannot eat any gluten at all because the symptoms are so severe. But there are some people who are simply sensitive to gluten, and just feel better in themselves when they avoid it or reduce it in their diet.

Why Do People Make Such A Big Deal Over Gluten

Cheerios, Whole Grain Oats Cereal, Gluten Free, 18 oz

The problem with gluten is that its extremely prone to cross-contamination. If you have celiac disease or an intolerance to gluten, whatever you eat shouldnt come into physical contact with a gluten-containing product.

But how often does that really happen? you might wonder. The answer: Quite a bit, often before that bowl youre impatiently waiting for is even manufactured.

Grains are a field crop, and many farms harvesting these crops grow more than one. And while this might be an extreme example, cross-contamination can start in the field. Farmers who grow wheat and oats might use the same machinery for both crops. Sometimes, this can cause one product to sift into the other, either during harvest, transport, or while being milled into flour. Suddenly, those gluten-free oats are no longer gluten-free.

The solution? If youre extremely sensitive to gluten, search for products that were manufactured in a gluten-free facility. This is what General Mills did with Honey Nut Cheerios and Lucky Charms: The products have always been made with oat flour, a naturally gluten-free flour. However, to combat cross-contamination, they began sifting out stray products from wheat, rye, and barley.

How Did I Determine If A Cereal Is Gluten

For confirming that cereal is free from gluten or not, I look forward to the measures which are given below:

1- Packaging: First and foremost, my eyes go through the packaging of that product. Does the package contain any gluten-free label on it?

2- Ingredients list: I laid my eyes on the ingredient list for the next. Does the list contain any wheat, barley, rye, oats, or any derivative of these elements, such as malt?

3- Research: I started to analyze that brand company online if my mind still has some doubts regarding the cereal and watch the reviews of that forum.

4- Nima Sensor Test: My last criteria is to use my Nima Sensor Test to test each serial of that product, which can answer all my questions. Nima Sensor is an easy way to check whether a product contains gluten.

Are Cheerios Gluten Free

Im often asked if Cheerios are gluten free because there is a lot of confusion about the brand. A lot of people with celiac disease refuse to eat it.

Cheerios are not only labeled gluten free, but also each packaging also displays, Proud sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation. As you know, when the Celiac Disease Foundation accepts money from Cheerios, it is clearly endorsing the product as safe for people with celiac disease.

On top of the gluten-free label and the endorsement from the Celiac Disease Foundation, I independently tested Cheerios for hidden gluten. The Nima Sensor did not detect any gluten .

Still, some people in the celiac disease community are wary of Cheerios. I have been skeptical myself, although I think that feeling is waning. To be honest with you, I believe everyone should be able to make their own decision about the safety of Cheerios without being judged or shamed.

The reason many people in the celiac disease community are skeptical of Cheerios is because General Mills uses commodity oats to make its cereal. Oats, while naturally gluten free, are often cross contaminated with gluten throughout the harvesting and manufacturing processes. You can read more about it in this article, Are Oats Gluten Free?

General Mills, like other companies, optically or mechanically sorts its commodity oats to remove the oat grain from any potential gluten grains that might have contaminated the crop.
