Help Brown Patchusing Corn Meal Soymeal Etc

hi all! i’ve been diligently trying to search for answers…but have finally reverted to just asking directly for help. I believe our lawn has succumbed to brown patch disease…and I want to try to treat organically. We are in Northern NJ & have KBG. After some research, I thought I would go with Corn Gluten Meal treatment…BUT I am having a tough time finding a place that sells it. So then I saw soymeal might be a good option? but i’m not sure if soymeal is just good for soil, but not good at treating brown patch/fungus. Is it? Then lastly…I did find a farm place that sells cracked corn…this is TOTALLY different from corn gluten meal, right? And also CGM is totally different from just cornmeal?

The other questions are…does it matter what “animal” the feed is for? Are some better than others for organic gardening? horses, goats, pigs, rabbits, etc. AHHH! such confusion! First & foremost, our front lawn is in terrible condition & is getting worse by the day! So please help! Thanks!

How Corn Gluten Works

Corn gluten does not prevent weed seeds from germinating, but it does inhibit those seeds from forming roots after germination. This means that applications must be very carefully timed. When the application of corn gluten is timed correctly, crabgrass seeds germinating will form shoots but not roots, and will therefore die, provided there is a short dry period after seed germination. However, if conditions are too wet immediately after seed germination, the weed can recover and establish a root.

Where To Buy Corn Gluten Meal

Many big-box stores and garden centers sell corn gluten meal. Be sure to examine the label closely to be sure its corn gluten meal and not corn gluten feed! While corn gluten feed can work, its less effective as a pre-emergent herbicide. Its also lower in nitrogen.

Options commonly available are granular or pelletized for easy dispersal. Powdered forms are far more popular but can be difficult to find in large quantities.

I like Espoma Organic Weed Preventer. Made from 100% corn gluten meal, its easy to use and apply. Its one of two granular options Im recommending, both of which are marketed as weed control.

The other granular option Id recommend is Concern 98175 Weed Prevention Plus. Made by the makers of Safer brand products, this is also 100% corn gluten meal and will work well.

For a powdered option, I highly recommend Walts Corn Gluten Meal. It has a slightly higher nitrogen rating than both Espoma and Concern do, which I prefer. Be forewarned, this isnt easily spread using a commercial fertilizer spreader. Youll have to spread it by hand.

How Much Is Needed

Application rates vary by form: powder, pelletized or granulated. The standard application rate is 20 pounds of corn gluten per 1,000 square feet of lawn. This rate also provides about 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.

The effects of corn gluten are cumulative, meaning that the results improve with repeated use over time.

High Protein Corn Gluten Meal 60% For Animal Feed

Corn gluten meal is a by-product from the manufacture of corn starch and corn syrup. It is very high in protein supplement in feeds for livestock, poultry and pets. It contains slightly more TDN than corn. The protein in corn gluten is degraded relatively slowly in the rumen.

A variety of corn gluten meal with 41 percent protein is available in some areas. It is higher in crude fiber and lower in TDN than the variety with 60 percent protein.

Corn gluten meal usually is not included in mixtures at levels greater than 15 percent or fed at a rate greater than 15 percent or fed at a rate greater than 5 pounds per cow per day due to poor palatability above these levels.

Corn Gluten Meal Did Not Prevent Weeds From Germinating In Osu Study

CORVALLIS, Ore. Corn gluten meal is a natural substitute for a synthetic pre-emergence herbicide and has been advertised as a more environmentally friendly way to control weeds.

A pre-emergent herbicide is one that kills seedlings as they germinate. Pre-emergent herbicides generally have to be applied and watered in before weed seeds germinate. Other herbicides, such as glyphosate kill plants after they have emerged.

A by-product of commercial corn milling, corn gluten meal contains protein from the corn. It poses no health risk to people or animals when used as an herbicide. With 60 percent protein it is used as feed for livestock, fish and dogs. It contains 10 percent nitrogen, by weight, so it acts as a fertilizer as well.

The use of corn gluten meal as an herbicide was discovered by accident during turfgrass disease research at Iowa State University. Researchers noticed that it prevented grass seeds from sprouting. Further research at Iowa State showed that it also effectively prevents other seeds from sprouting, including seeds from many weeds such as crabgrass, chickweed, and even dandelions. Components in corn gluten meal called dipeptides are apparently responsible for herbicidal activity.

Q: Is Corn Meal Gluten Organic

A: Well kinda yes, and kinda no.

99% of the United States corn crop is now GMO corn. Some people are concerned that there is a risk with genetically-modified crops. Because of this, corn meal gluten is not an OMRI-rated product. OMRI ratings are required for any products grown to be certified organic.

It is a natural product in that it is entirely made out of plant material. As its extracted from inside the corn kernel, its unlikely to be chemically contaminated.

Its a safer alternative to chemical fertilizers and chemical herbicides, for certain. But it is not certified organic.

So in the very early spring, consider corn gluten meal for lawn fertilizer. It can help you prevent some of the weed growth, and its a great alternative to chemical fertilizers. Itll help improve your soil quality while feeding your grass!

As a natural fertilizer, corn gluten meal is a fantastic source of nitrogen. The typical NPK for corn gluten meal is 10-0-0. Its slow-releasing, taking up to 2 months to break down in the soil.

What Not To Use: Salt

While it’s true that salt kills plants, including weeds, it also poisons the ground for many years and moves into groundwater sources after rain or watering. It’s a bad idea to use it anywhere in your yard, so steer clear of homemade weed-killer recipes that call for salt or Epsom salt, vinegar, and dish soap. Both the salts and soap are toxic to the environment and should be avoided.

Gluten Cornmeal As Weed Killer

Researchers at Iowa State University discovered by accident that cornmeal gluten acts as an herbicide while they were doing disease research. They saw that corn gluten meal kept grass and other seeds, such as crabgrass, dandelions, and chickweed from sprouting.

It is important to note that cornmeal gluten is only effective against seeds, not plants that are mature, and is most effective with corn gluten having at least 60% proteins in it. For annual weeds that are growing, plain cornmeal products will not kill it. These weeds include:

How To Use Corn Gluten Meal

To use corn gluten meals natural herbicidal effect, it takes more than you would expect. A basic estimate is 20 pounds of meal for 1,000 square feet. That quantity increases if the soil is poor.

For lawns, you can use a spreader to evenly spread the meal across the entire lawns surface. This is especially easy with the pelletized and granular forms available.

Be cautious of using corn gluten meal in garden use if you plan on direct-sowing seeds. That natural pre-emergence herbicide may prevent your seeds from developing.

As a fertilizer in the garden, wait until your plants are already established. You can then lightly work it into the surface or top-dress with it, as desired.

In the fall, work some corn gluten through your soil and spread another layer over top. This will prevent winter and early spring weeds and start breaking down in the soil. If you plan on growing winter crops, be sure theyre already established first!

How To Use Cornmeal Gluten In The Garden

Many people use corn gluten on their lawns, but it can be safely and effectively used in gardens as well. Using gluten cornmeal in gardens is a great way to keep weed seeds from sprouting and will not damage existing plants, shrubs, or trees.

Be sure to follow the application instructions on the package and apply before weeds start to grow. Sometimes this can be a very tight window, but is best done in early spring. How Is Corn Gluten Meal Made

The process of processing corn for oils or cornstarch results in this useful byproduct. To make corn gluten meal, there are two different methods, but they both start in the same place.

Harvested corn will be taken to a mill. At the mill, the corn will be cleaned and then steeped to soften the kernels.

Once the kernels have become soft, a coarse grinding stage happens. The resulting ground corn travels down one of two paths. One results in corn oil as well as corn gluten meal feed for animals. The other results in cornstarch and a less-potent corn gluten meal.

For feed-grade gluten meal, the grinding stage then moves on to a germ separation stage. The germ is then pressed to extract oil.

The resulting pressed meal is blended with ground corn bran and some steeping liquid. This creates wet corn gluten feed. It may be kept loose or pressed into pellets. The resulting feed is then dried for long-term storage.

The other process also begins at the grinding stage. Unlike the meal for pressing oil, meal for extracting cornstarch requires further grinding. Its then screened to remove bran, which is sent to the feed prep area.

The finely-ground meal is made into a slurry with water. Its repeatedly washed and cycled through centrifuges to extract the starches. Once the cornstarch has been extracted, the water is removed and the meal dried into corn gluten meal.
