You’re going to want to make everything with this gluten-free bread. Deli style sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, gluten french toast … everything.

What Is The Best Gluten Free Flour To Use For Bread

Once the recipe was perfected, it was tested with three different gluten free flours to make sure the results were consistent.

Using information from the best gluten free flour article, I eliminated using Bobs Red Mill 1-to-1 GF Flour because it had such disappointing results across the board.

I tested with Cup 4 Cup, which rates as the top gluten free flour, King Arthur Measure-for-Measure, and Pillsbury gluten free flour because some readers have been asking about its performance.

From an ease and baking standpoint, they all performed well. Pillsbury had the most solid structure, which turned out to be a not very good thing. Cup 4 Cup was the softest, with King Arthur in between.

As far as taste, Cup 4 Cup was the clear winner. There was nothing gluten free tasting about the bread. It was soft, squishy, and slightly sweet.

King Arthur still tasted good and had a favorable texture, but had a strong rustic taste to it. It reminded me more of wheat bread than white bread.

Sadly the bread made with GF Pillsbury flour went straight into the trash. It tasted like dry cardboard and was inedible. Pillsbury gluten free flour might work for other recipes, but definitely did not work well with this one!

How To Store And Freeze Banana Bread

It’s best to store banana bread covered on your countertop. It should last up to 5 or 6 days that way, but it’s best within the first 3 to 4 days. It is still perfectly edible after day 4, but it might start to dry out.

If you don’t think you’ll use it up in time, don’t worry. Freezing banana bread is easy.

Can I buy this gluten free Wholemeal bread recipe as a brown bread mix?

I did give consideration to marketing my gluten free wholemeal bread as a bread mix. It would however, have taken some time to achieve. Having already published the recipe on Gluten Free Alchemist, I was also sure that the learning which went into my making this bread work would have been taken and marketed by someone else. And it has. To be honest, although I may be missing out on a hoped-for business venture, I know that the magic in this bread is available to all and that everyone has the capacity to make their very own bread mix in a cost-effective way

Tips For Measuring Gluten

The Best Gluten

The best way to measure gluten-free flour is the spoon & level method. Using a spoon, scoop the flour into the measuring cup. After youve spooned the flour into the measuring cup, use the back of a knife to level off the top of the measuring cup.

Friends, please do not scoop the flour out of the bag with your measuring cup. If you do you may get more flour than the recipe calls for.

Also, measure flour using nested measuring cups. Do not measure dry ingredients in a liquid measuring cup.

How To Make Gluten

  • This gluten-free bread recipe only has a few simple ingredients: gluten-free all-purpose flour, baking powder, instant yeast, honey, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, warm water, room temperature egg whites , and salt.
  • Spray a 9x 5 bread pan or 9x 4 small Pullman loaf pan with gluten-free cooking spray. Move the top oven rack to the middle rack. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Add the gluten-free flour, baking powder, and instant yeast to a large bowl and stir to combine the ingredients.
  • Add the olive oil, honey, and apple cider vinegar, and warm water to the flour mixture and mix on low for 1 minute. If you are using a stand-up mixer, use the paddle attachment, not the dough hook.
  • Add the room temperature egg whites and the salt to the dough and mix on medium for 1 minute. The dough will look like a thick cake batter.

What Is The Best Type Of Bread Pan For Baking Gluten

I test baked this gluten-free bread in two different types of bread pans. I used both a 9-inch x 4-inch Small Pullman loaf pan and a Wilton 9-inch x 5-inch non-stick pan.

I highly recommend using the 9-inch x 4-inch small Pullman loaf pan with this recipe. The Pullman loaf pan has a narrow bottom with steep, high sides and a ridged surface that gives gluten-free bread dough the extra support to help it rise the best. I did not use the lid in this recipe. I only bought the Pullman loaf pan.

If you bake the gluten-free bread in a 9-inch x 5-inch bread pan, it will not rise as high because the pan is larger than the Pullman loaf pan. Even though it does not rise as high, it still as delicious!

Finally, a loaf of gluten free bread that actually tastes good!

When my son Kell was diagnosed with celiac disease several years ago, I was completely overwhelmed by the idea of gluten-free baking. It was just too complicated! But he had to avoid all forms of gluteneven trace amounts from cross-contaminationor he faced severe intestine damage.

More Ideas You’ll Love

Eventually, I was forced to face those fears because he missed bread and a normal diet. As a mom, I have learned the hard way that sometimes you have to make changes to your plans very quickly. Celiac disease and finding the best gluten alternatives to create my own bread recipe was never in the plan. But you adjust.

I am not fond of the gluten-free bread options that are available in the stores. Many of the pre-mixed, pre-packaged, and pre-made GF bread products that we tried just did not taste good. I wanted to find a solution to give him a sense of normalcy. But also, the list of ingredients is often written in small print and can contain surprisingly high amounts of sugar.

After spending time looking into my options, I worked on my recipe hard to put together the best GF bread recipe available. My son sure appreciated it, and now I want to share it with you!

Years ago, youd have to pull together different combinations of grains and ingredients for gluten free baking.

The Difference Between Wholemeal And Refined White Flour

Would you know the difference between 100% wholemeal and a whole grain bread? You probably head to the supermarket thinking, I will do myself some good by buying whole grain bread instead of white bread but you might be surprised if you actually check the label.

A bread labelled as whole grain bread can still be mainly manufactured with white flour. It can be referred to as a whole grain bread simply because it may contain a few e.g. sunflower seeds. On the other hand, a company can only call a bread a 100 % wholemeal bread if it has been exactly made from a 100 % wholemeal flour.

Stoneground flour contains far more nutrients and fibre than white flour. During the refining process, white flour gets stripped off all its goodness. In many countries including Ireland, its required by law to fortify refined flours with vitamins and minerals but dont be fooled, you will still be missing out on important nutrients and fibre. Most commercial white flour in the US is bleached, using chemicals like acetone peroxide, chlorine, and benzoyl peroxide.

A traditional sourdough bread like this Sourdough Rye Bread Recipe will only ever call for 3 simple ingredients, water, flour and salt, no nasty commercial yeast, additives or preservatives required. Learn how to make your own sourdough starter, its so simple.
