Petunias Pies And Pastries

The location of Petunias really cant be beat. Its right downtown, just a few blocks away from Powells Books, which is a must-see on your Portland itinerary, along with a bunch of other great spots in downtown Portland.

They are dedicated gluten free AND vegan, but youd never know it.

Again, the story behind Petunias is remarkably similar to mine, and many of yours too. The founder, Lisa Clark, was experiencing some health issues before she decided to cut out gluten and dairy. Lo and behold, she started feeling better! She started Petunias in 2010 at some of Portlands farmers markets, and it has been a rocket ship of growth ever since. The location in downtown Portland opened in 2014, and is a staple on any visit to Portland for me.

At their bakery / cafe, you can find a wide variety of sweet and savory treats like cupcakes, donuts, and biscuits, along with some heartier meals. They also make amazing cakes, though Ive never actually tried one of them.

In my opinion, the star of the show is the donuts. Ive had several donuts over the course of our trips to Portland, and never once have I left disappointed. My favorite so far has been the tiramisu-filled donut I had a few years ago, which might top the list of the best gluten free donuts Ive ever had.

They also make their ice cream in-house, which makes Petunias one of the best spots to get gluten free ice cream in Portland. And you should definitely get the house made waffle cone too, duh.

Portland Maine: A Gluten

Gluten Free Bakeries in Portland, Maine

When I grew up in Maine, downtown Portland was just a bunch of empty warehouses not exactly a destination spot. Like many cities, its encountered a giant resurgence over the years. In fact, Portland has the highest number of restaurants per person in the U.S., prompting Bon Appetit magazine to name it the restaurant city of the year. Portland is the smallest city to ever receive that honor.

From the butteriest croissants to outstanding pho, its never been a better time to hit up Portland, Maine,Bon Appetit editor at large Andrew Knowlton wrote in his review of the seaport town in southern Maine.

Stop right there. Im not about buttery croissants. Tempting as they may be, they are certainly filled with gluten. However, Im excited to tell you that Portland is also home to many wonderful restaurants that offer gluten free options and at least two bakeries that are gluten free.

That was enough to send me to Portland in search of these bakeries, having heard about them from people all over the Northeast. The Holy Donut, a donut shop makes all its donuts from Maine potatoes. Theyve been in business since 2012 and now make two million donuts a year.

Holy Donut does have a disclaimer:We offer gluten free donuts, but we are not a certified gluten free facility! We do our best to keep gf ingredients separate and we do prep and cook with separate gluten-free designated equipment. But eat at your own risk.

The Highroller Lobster Company

Finding ‘gluten freedom’ in Portland at Bam Bam Bakery

The Highroller Lobster Company came highly recommended from a family friend in Portland so we decided to check it out. It has a super cool red-and-white, diner-esque decor, but I was hesitant about the extent of gluten free options Id find here.

This place is well known for their totally unique takes on Maine lobster rolls, so I was a little disappointed to find they didnt have gluten free buns, or mark gluten free options on the menu. However the staff told me they do have one lobster roll that is actually gluten free! This is the lobster cheese crisp taco which is pretty much what it says it is. The taco is entirely made of cheese, so its naturally gluten free. I asked our waitress and she said this could be prepared on a clean, separate area of the grill that wasnt used for any gluten-containing products.

Other than that, the options are pretty limited. You cant have the fries here , but you can for instance have plain crab or lobster tail on a stick. The clam chowder was also gluten free when we went , but double check about the ingredients when you go in case they change . Would I recommend The Highroller Lobster Company if youre gluten free? Maybe. Its worth it if youre dining with non-celiacs, but if its just you, I wouldnt go out of your way. You need to be sure and explain your cross contact needs.

Where To Stay In Portland

I always recommend staying in an Airbnb with a kitchen when you are traveling as a Celiac. Its nice to know that even if you cant find safe gluten free food, you always have a fallback option with cooking in your Airbnbs kitchen.

That being said, youll have no problem finding gluten free food in Portland.

My favorite area to stay in is just East of the river . The East side of the river feels much more like a residential neighborhood, with some great strips of shops and restaurants that are well worth a walk down. Explore Mississippi, and the Southeast parts of Hawthorne, and Division streets for a treat.

I have personally stayed at all four of these Airbnbs, and can 100% recommend them for your trip.

  • Modern Hawthorne Guesthouse Close to Everything : Beautiful, light-filled modern loft a block away from Hawthorne, one of the best streets to explore in Portland. We loved our stay here, including summer evenings out on the patio.
  • Modern Alberta Arts Apartment : We stayed here on our last trip, and LOVED the Alberta Arts District. Its a little further out from Downtown Portland, but there are so many incredible restaurants and things to do along Alberta Street. This apartment is a perfect base for exploring the area.
  • If you have a bigger group, we have also stayed at this Comfy Buckman Neighborhood Home, which has three bedrooms and is in a great spot to explore the area, and this Industrial Three Bedroom Apartment, which is a few blocks away.
