How Do I Manage It
If you’re confident you are intolerant to a particular food, the only way to manage this is to stop eating the food for a while and then reintroduce small quantities while monitoring how much you can eat without causing symptoms.
Check food labels to see which sorts of foods to avoid.
If you think your child may have a food intolerance, check with a GP or dietitian before eliminating foods from their diet, as a restricted diet could affect their growth and development. Cows’ milk, for example, is an important source of calcium, vitamin D and protein.

When your healthcare provider hears you say “gluten allergy,” she’s likely to think first of celiac disease, which occurs when your immune system mounts an attack on your small intestine in response to ingestion of gluten-containing foods.

There are many different symptoms potentially caused by celiac diseaseevery case is different, and in fact some people don’t have any symptoms at all. But there are some symptoms that appear frequently in people ultimately diagnosed with celiac disease, including:
- Diarrhea and/or constipation
- Depression and/or anxiety
The absence of these symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean you can rule out celiac disease: as I said, some people have no symptoms at all, or suffer mainly from neurological symptoms .

The Key To Gluten Intolerance Testing
The key with these gluten intolerance test in the lab is you MUST be eating gluten for roughly 4 weeks prior to testing in order to detect gluten antibodies. That being said, if you know you dont tolerate gluten I do not recommend adding it back into your diet just to see what happens on a test.
If you are certain that gluten is to blame for your symptoms, I would avoid it no matter what any test says! In my experience, testing does not always have the most valid responses when compared to the gold standard of an elimination diet.
As I often told the patents in my clinic: Your body knows better than any test. If your symptoms disappear when you take gluten out of your diet and return when you add it back in even if you have a negative test result you still have an issue with gluten. So dont eat it
Whos At Risk For Celiac Disease
Is it people who a) have family members with the disease b) had a stressful event in their life c) already suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or d) any of the above? You probably dont think stress or RA are risk factors and probably picked A. However, they are indeed risk factors, so the correct answer is D.

The Problem With A Gluten
However, a gluten-free diet may be overly restrictive of gluten-containing foods that are low in fructans.
For example, sourdough bread has gluten but its fermentation process removes the fructans. Soy sauce also contains gluten but is low in fructans. Beer comes to mind as well.
These are off-limits on a gluten-free diet, yet unnecessary to restrict for the vast majority.
The other issue is that most people with digestive issues dont ever fully recover on a gluten-free diet. This is because FODMAPs are the likely culprit and a low FODMAP diet is whats actually required.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO TELL if you are gluten intolerant: an elimination/reintegration diet and blood tests. But first, lets talk about what gluten is and why its a problem for so many people.

Its hard to know exactly how many people have NCGS, but a large study looked at over 12,000 people and only 486 were suspected to have NCGS thats 4%. Out of those 486 people
