How To Make Graham Cracker Crust Dairy

Secret Ingredient for “Graham Cracker” Crust!

If you also follow a dairy-free diet, you can make a gluten-free graham cracker crust without the dairy by swapping out butter for a vegan butter option or coconut oil.

My preference is to use vegan butter, because its closer in flavor to a traditional graham cracker crust, but you can use whatever fat choice that you like for this recipe.

Making Graham Crackers Instead Of Buying Them

Did you know that you can buy gluten free graham crackers ? There are a few brands that Ive tried, and theyre all perfectly fine.

In fact, in my sons sleep away camp he uses them to make smores along with his friends on bonfire nights. Im so super grateful that they exist, since his camp is just not going to make their own gluten free graham crackers.

But making your own gluten free graham crackers that are just like the ones that Nabisco makes is way better. And its so easy to do. Plus, you can use them to make a no-bake chocolate eclair cake.

What Is The Difference Between New York Cheesecake And Regular Cheesecake

New York cheesecake relies heavily on cream cheese to create its dense, rich texture and have that telltale sour cream layer. Many other cheesecake recipes use a combination of sour cream and heavy cream to thin out the batter, which makes the end result more silky and creamy. Other recipes use ricotta cheese, for a light and airy texture that almost melts on the fork.

  • Use the back of a measuring cup to press down on the crust to help compact the crust. This will help the crust not to crumble and be more firm.
  • If you are a fan of brown sugar, you can use it in place of granulated sugar. It gives the crust a hint of a molasses flavor.
  • If you are making a no-bake pie, it is best to chill this pie crust for at least 2 hours before filling it.
  • If youre making a baked pie, bake this crust per your recipes directions.

To make this recipe vegan, youll need to substitute the butter with either plant-based butter or coconut oil. Given the choice, Id opt for Earth Balance Vegan Butter Sticks. Theyre the closest substitution for baking, and the sticks have a lower water content than the tubs do.

Ive made so many graham cracker crusts over the years, both baked and unbaked, and used them in too many cheesecakes to count. In fact, many of the best no bake gluten free desserts on this blog are made using this no-bake graham cracker crust.

My favorite recipe that uses a no-bake graham cracker crust has to be our no-bake strawberry cheesecake. The filling is made with strawberries, cream cheese, and whipped cream sugar and just a bit of gelatin. Its so quick and easy, and its become a favorite of many of yours over the years.

Youd also love our no-bake chocolate pudding pie with a chocolate cookie version of the no-bake recipe below. The no-bake variety is also great when you arent even looking for the crust to lift out of its container at all in anything other than a spoonful, like our lemon meringue pie in jars.

You can also use the no-bake crust as the base for a baked recipe. Our key lime pie squares are a stunning example of how well that works.

How To Make A Gluten Free Graham Cracker Crust

The main difference with using gluten free graham cracker crumbs is that they dont absorb the butter as readily as regular graham cracker crumbs would.

Youll notice that when you press your crust into place, it almost looks like the melted butter is pooling on top of the crust.

Luckily, theres an easy way to fix that!

All you have to do it let the crust rest for anywhere from 10 20 minutes before baking it. That resting period will give the gluten free crust time to absorb the butter.

Once the butter has been absorbed, you can treat the crust as you would a regular graham cracker crust.

Do You Have To Make Your Own Graham Crackers

Im happy to answer this with one word: no. I always have a few emergency boxes of packaged gluten free graham crackers in my pantry. Simply put, there are times when I just dont have the time to make my own cookies and the rest of the dessert.

My gluten free son loves anything with a graham cracker crust, so I try to keep a batch of my homemade gluten free graham crackers around. They really do taste just like Nabisco, and Ill often make a double batch.

I keep one batch whole, wrap them tightly and freeze them. That allows me to make desserts like the decadent no-bake banana split or our no-bake chocolate eclair cake. The other batch I process into crumbs and keep in a sealed glass container on my counter. Either Ill make them into a crust, or sprinkle some over a smoothie bowl or yogurtif Im feeling generous.

Even though I rarely use the store-bought crackers, Im super grateful that there are now enough brands of gluten free graham crackers that its possible to buy them. My current favorite packaged gluten free graham cracker brand is Schar. Theyre not as good as homemade , but theyre great in a pinch!
