How To Make Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

They are quick and easy to make.

  • Whisk the dry ingredients together except for the old fashioned rolled oats
  • Cream the butter with the sugars until fluffy. Careful not to soften butter fully or to warm it. Semi-firm butter is best and will help cookies spread less.
  • Add the dry ingredients into the wet and mix until just combined
  • Fold in the oatmeal and chocolate chips or raisins
  • Scoop out the dough with a cookie scoop. Using the cookie scoop is the easiest way to make these cookies uniform in size and easier to handle as the dough can get sticky
  • Roll the dough from the scoop into balls and place on a lined baking sheet.
  • Bake the cookies until the edges are set and golden. The centre will still look unset and that is fine they will continue to bake even after coming out of the oven while they sit on the hot baking sheet. Make sure to bake them with the oven rack placed in the middle of the oven.
  • Allow them to cool in the baking pan 2-5 minutes and then transfer them directly to cooling rack to cool completely.

    Are The Oats Used To Make Cheerios Safe

    Cheerios is one of the most accessible cereal brands around, and most varieties of Cheerios are labeled gluten free. The brand is also a sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation and proudly displays this on boxes of its cereal.

    However, despite the gluten-free label, the Canadian Celiac Association recommends that people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity avoid Cheerios, even if its labeled gluten free, due to concerns about potential gluten in each box, and due to what is says is General Mills unwillingness to be fully transparent in its testing methods.

    Instructions:

    Step 1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9 x 9-inch baking dish and set aside.

    Step 2 In a small bowl, combine rolled oats, baking powder, salt, and spices. Set aside.

    Step 3 In a large bowl, whisk together water , eggs, brown sugar, melted and cooled butter, and vanilla extract. Add oat mixture to the wet ingredients and mix to combine. Fold in chopped pears.

    Step 4 Transfer mixture to the prepared baking dish and bake until set, about 40-50 minutes. Let cool about 5 minutes before serving.

    Cooking gluten free oatmeal is exactly the same as cooking with regular oatmeal, as there is no actual difference in the oats themselves.     Bobs Red Mill is a brand many people in the gluten-free community know and trust, and the brand uses a combination of purity and commodity oats to make its gluten-free products.

    I took pause when I learned early on in my celiac journey that Bobs Red Mill gluten-free oats were neither purity protocol oats nor certified gluten free.

    However, Bobs Red Mill makes gluten-free oats safe for people with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities to consume, as it goes to great lengths to make sure the products are safe.

    In fact, Bobs Red Mill says its oats are batch tested before, during, and after processing using an ELISA Gluten Assay. The Gluten ELISA is a quantitative test able to detect low levels of gluten in food and beverages.

    The company also says that before gluten-free items are released to retail, theyre tested again in a dedicated gluten-free quality control facility to ensure theyre free from gluten.

    Critics will say that Bobs Red Mill doesnt go far enough in its testing for hot spots or the spotty presence of wheat that may be missed by even the most stringent testing measures. I find this criticism misleading and unfounded because Bobs Red Mill does a lot to keep the gluten-free community safe.

    All of its gluten-free labeled products are processed and packaged in a dedicated gluten-free building that processes and packages nothing but gluten-free products.

    Finally, I put Bobs Red Mill oats to the Nima Sensor test, and it passed with flying colors.

    Why Cant Some People With Celiac Disease Tolerate Oats

    A small number of people with celiac disease experience gluten cross reactivity when they eat oats, meaning their body confuses the protein in oats with the protein in wheat .

    If you have celiac disease and cannot tolerate oats, then it doesnt matter if the oats are commodity or purity protocol oats, dont eat them. You can get tested for gluten cross reactivity, which I talk about in detail in my article, Understanding Gluten Cross Reactivity and Gluten Cross-Reactive Foods.

    Remember, not all of your digestive woes should be blamed on gluten. If oats bother you, consider if you might have a leaky gut or candida, for example, before giving up on this food group.

    Rest assured, the majority of people with celiac disease can tolerate oats just fine, including me. In fact, this study concludes that gluten-free oats can be tolerated by the vast majority of the celiac disease population, and oats can be a great addition to a balanced, gluten-free diet, offering up plenty of heart-healthy soluble fiber.
