What Do You Think
As a rule, I try to avoid snacking and I only really grab things like this in case of an emergency. They’re a handy snack to keep for an energy boost if you’re caught out without a meal – I try to keep some in my car glove box for when a job overruns and I can’t wait to get back to the office for lunch!
I’ve told you what I think – but what about you? If you have any suggestions for any gluten free snack bars you think I should try, get in touch or leave a comment below.

Battle Of The ‘healthy’ Gluten Free Snack Bars
November 8, 2013 by Sarah Howells
There are so many snack bars out there that purport to be healthy. “I’m low fat, eat me!” they shout, or the most recent one: “High in protein, I must be good for you!”
I think there are a lot of myths out there that need to be dispelled. For starters, low fat doesn’t mean it’s good for you. A recent nutrition seminar I attended with James Buckingham of PFP Exeter clearly spelt out that fats should in fact be called ‘thins’. We need a good amount of healthy fats in our diet to survive and to make matters worse, these low fat ‘healthy’ products are generally crammed full of sugar – one of the number one traitors linked to rising obesity levels.
With this in mind, and before I veer too much off topic, I was sent a load of different ‘healthy’ snack bars recently and thought it would be good to test them out against each other. As a rule, I tend to stick to meals and avoid snacks such as these, but I thought, for the sake of my research, I would be able to endure the sweet treats…what a hard life….! I’d like to point out that although I do get free samples sent to me, I always review products honestly and this blog will always remain impartial.
So armed with a bunch of Nakd, Trek and Frank bars I put them to the test, and here’s what I thought…

Ingredients To Watch Out For In An Energy Bar
Trans-fat – Trans-fats commonly go by their more scientific name partially hydrogenated oils. Most trans fats are produced artificially by injecting hydrogen into vegetable oils. Why would anyone do such a thing? Because it provides the oil, and by extension the things made using the oil, a longer shelf life. Restaurants often use trans-fatty oils to make their fried chicken, fried seafoods and French fries because they dont have to change the oil in the fryolator as often. Whereas there is no evidence GMOs will harm you there is copious evidence that trans fats increase your risk for stroke, heart attack and type II diabetes.
Sugar – We touched on sugar above but it warrants a bit more attention. Sugar makes things taste delicious. And its cheap. As such food manufacturers love sugar. Your body however can do without all but the smallest amounts of sugar. One of the major differences between candy bars and energy bars is that energy bars are not loaded with sugar the way candy bars are. At least they shouldnt be. When trying to decide on an energy bar look for hidden sugars in the form of high fructose corn syrup, agave and brown rice syrup and default to bars that achieve their sweetness by using dried fruit or things like raisins or dates instead.

When you have an allergy, grabbing snacks on the go is not always a reliable option. My suitcase on that trip was 25 percent Kind Bars.
Larabar kind of remade the marketplace when their fruit and nut forward bars took off 5 years ago. Since then, Luna and Cliff have had to make way for many healthy rivals that not only tout energy and protein, but all-around nutrients. This summer Ive been trying to eat as cleanly as possible, which has meant a lot of label reading and avoiding of frequent gluten-free fillers like soy and sugar. I wanted to share with you some of my favorites, why they rock, and what to beware of if you have other dietary concerns.1. The Pure Bar
