How Much Is Needed

Application rates vary by form: powder, pelletized or granulated. The standard application rate is 20 pounds of corn gluten per 1,000 square feet of lawn. This rate also provides about 2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet.

The effects of corn gluten are cumulative, meaning that the results improve with repeated use over time.

Form Of Cinnamon Used

Studies have used four forms of cinnamon dry powder, aqueous extraction, alcohol extraction and commercial essential oil. The latter two forms have been studied the most, probably because they contain the highest levels of organic compounds.

Aqueous, essential oil and alcohol extracts all showed antifungal properties. Essential oils are more effective than alcohol extracts, probably because the active ingredients are more concentrated. It is reasonable to expect that aqueous extracts are the lest effective.

One study mixed the powder with soil and found some effects. I found no study that sprinkled the dry powder on the surface of the soil, which is the common method used by gardeners.

Corn Gluten Meal Alternatives

Washington State University recommends exploring alternative weed control methods instead of purchasing and applying corn gluten meal to lawns. Corn gluten meal appeals to many homeowners because it isn’t a chemical, and fortunately, there are plenty of other non-chemical alternatives to try to control weeds in your lawn.

For example, consider installing sub-irrigation instead of using an above-ground sprinkler system. Because the water is delivered underground, it won’t prompt germination in seeds that settled on the surface of your lawn. For smaller lawns, hand-weeding is a viable alternative because you can target the specific weed you want to remove.

Options like using boiling water or vinegar to kill weeds may also affect the surrounding healthy grass, so proceed with caution. If you are trying to kill the existing vegetation to create a clean slate for a healthy lawn, try soil solarization for large lawns or smothering smaller lawns with a thick layer of mulch.

Corn Gluten Meal Does It Work For Weeds

Pin on Home Improvement Projects

Corn gluten meal is the new herbicide for lawns. The movement away from synthetic chemical herbicides has left a gap for managing lawns and researchers are scrambling to find an organic solution. One product that is showing promise is corn gluten meal. Its proponents claim that it prevents weed seed from germinating, and if seeds dont germinate you have a weed free lawn. Sounds like a perfect solution.

There are scientific reports, both for and against the product. Anecdotal evidence from gardeners is also mixed. Does the product work? How should it be used? Are people using it correctly?

Taste Of The Wild Rocky Mountain Feline Formula Review

Taste of the Wild is another industry staple, and their range of recipes has remained extremely stable over the last decade, in stark contrast to others.

Despite being a modern staple, Taste of the Wild is quite young in comparison to giants like Purina and was only launched back in 2007.

Taste of the Wild fits nicely between pricier premium brands and the cost-effective brands by providing reasonably priced food with satisfactory nutrition and ingredient selection.

If you are interested in learning more about Taste of the Wild, head on over to our Taste of the Wild Brand Review.

Rocky Mountain Formula has been our favorite Taste of the Wild cat food recipe for some time. It packs an impressive minimum of 42% protein and 18% fat which is outstanding for its price point.

The bulk of this protein is from animal-based sources, with the primary ingredient being Chicken Meal. However, there are also smaller portions of Roasted Venison and Smoked Salmon, which are unusual additions and will give the recipe a unique flavor.

Outside of this unusual mix of meat ingredients, Taste of the Wild utilizes legume and starch ingredients in all of its grain-free recipes, which include ingredients like Peas, Sweet Potatoes, and White Potatoes.

This mix of legumes and starches provide a modest proportion of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and fiber.

Corn Gluten: An Organic Pre

Corn gluten meal is a powdery byproduct of the corn milling process. Originally used as a supplement in hog feed, corn gluten has become a common organic alternative to synthetic chemical herbicides. It can be effective as a pre-emergent herbicide used to control crabgrass and other lawn weeds, and it also has nutritional properties. Corn gluten meal is about 10 percent nitrogen by weight, meaning 100 pounds of corn gluten contains 10 pounds of nitrogen. This organic source of nitrogen is slowly released over a three- to four-month period.

Type Of Cinnamon Studied

Several studies do not specify the name of the species tested and in most cases only a single species was used. I even found one study that used a species that is not commonly used to make commercial cinnamon.

One study did compare the essential oils of several species and found that all of them had some antifungal properties, but some were much more effective than others. The true cinnamon, C. verum, was the most effective.

Corn Gluten Meal Q & A

4health Pet Food – Feed your pets like family with no corn, no wheat, and no soy.

Liquid corn gluten meal spray – a listener/farmer recommendation that’s a great idea. The way we use corn gluten on our fields – we make a tea out of it and spray on the fields once a month from Autumn to May. Works very well. We use 2 to 6 cups of corn gluten to 100 gallons of water and spray it on with a pull behind sprayer. We just put the corn gluten meal in panty hose and suspend it in the sprayer when we fill it up, then swish the panty hose, remove and stir. Use at about 35 gallons per acre. Simple, economical and effective.

Corn Gluten Meal Does It Work

Dr. Nick Christians original field work showed that corn gluten meal applied at 99, 198, 297, 396, 495, and 594 g/m2 reduced crab grass infestation by 50, 65, 80, 95, and 93%, respectively when applied 1 week before crab grass germination. Applying it 4 weeks before germination required higher amounts to have the same effect.

When 22 different weeds were tested they found that all were reduced, but the degree of reduction varied by both species and application rate. At low rates some weeds were unaffected. Since this work was done, other research has identified a few weeds that seem to be immune to corn gluten meal.

Most discussions refer to weeds, but non-weed seeds like grass, perennials and vegetables are also affected.

Others have also tested corn gluten meal. A study out of Oregon State University says that they could not replicate the initial field findings. I am not sure that this work was ever published? The work was part of a Masters degree and is available as a Thesis. It found that corn gluten meal did not reduce the number of weeds. In its conclusion it states that this could be due to the fact that the testing was done on clear soil, with no grass and therefore no competition, or that it might be due to an old product. The product was not tested in the lab to verify it worked. The work did not record rain fall during the tests and Oregon can be quite wet, so it is also possible that excess rain kept the product from working.

What Does The Science Say

The antifungal and antimicrobial properties of cinnamon have been studied and confirmed. At least one of the active antifungal components, cinnamaldehyde, has been well studied and there is some understanding about how it controls fungi at a chemical level.

Unfortunately, for several reasons we cant conclude from these studies that cinnamon, as used by gardeners, controls damping-off. Here is why.

Wellness Core Grain Free Turkey Meal & Duck Recipe Review

The 5 Best Cat Foods At Tractor Supply

Last in our list of recommended cat food brands from Tractor Supply is another big player in Wellness. Many of you will be familiar with seeing Wellness products at other large pet food stores such as PetSmart.

While Wellness has several sub-brands and ranges, we find ourselves coming back to their Core range time and time again. Its consistent nutrition and selection of higher-quality ingredients make it a no-brainer for cat owners looking for a premium cat food recipe.

You can learn about the Core range and Wellnesss other products in our Wellness Brand Review.

There are several meat choices within the core range, including Turkey, Chicken, Duck, and Salmon. Weve chosen to highlight the above Turkey and Duck recipe as a change from the bulk of cat food recipes which are Chicken-based.

Similar to other recipes here, this recipe from Wellness provides excellent nutrition with a minimum of 38% protein and 18% fat. This animal-based protein and fat is sourced from a portion of Turkey, Turkey Meal, Pork Meal, and Duck.

While Turkey is extremely similar to Chicken, the Pork and Duck present may give the recipe a more appealing or unique taste.

While some brands choose to use a range of legumes in their recipes, Wellness only includes a single legume ingredient in Peas which is the industrys most popular choice. These Peas provide a mix of carbohydrates, plant-based protein, and fiber.

Not All Corn Gluten Meal Is The Same

There are different qualities of corn gluten meal and the one that is a herbicide contains 60% protein. This product is always labeled as a pre-emergent herbicide.

The true corn gluten meal herbicide is expensive and so many people have tried a cheaper product called corn gluten feed, or distillers grain. These animal feed products may even be called corn gluten meal but they will not be labeled as a pre-emergent herbicide.

One reason corn gluten meal may be getting bad press is that gardeners are trying to use the feed products and then reporting they dont work. They dont work because they dont have a high enough protein level they are the wrong product.

Another common problem is that corn gluten meal needs to be applied at a heavy rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 sq ft and most home spreaders cant reach this level. If it is not applied thick enough, it wont be effective.

What Is Corn Gluten Meal

In the 1990s, Dr. Nick Christians at Iowa State University was doing some work on golf putting greens and stumbled upon the herbicidal qualities of a product called corn gluten meal. This natural material is a by-product of the wet milling process used to produce corn starch and corn syrup from corn.

Corn gluten meal is 60% protein and contains 10% nitrogen, by weight.

Corn gluten meal is not the corn meal found in grocery stores, as so many sites on social media claim. Corn meal has no herbicidal properties and as far as I can tell the only thing it will do in the garden is feed ants and slugs.

There is no difference in terms of the efficacy of the CGM, however, there are usually added supplements like fertilizer in the pelleted form. Some people like pellets as they are easier to apply using your spreader and are effective up to 6 weeks as they break down slowly over time. The finer granules are harder to spread and break down faster due to their powdery form and, as a result, arenât as effective as long. I use the powdery granules because I like the lower cost and I have more lawn to apply.I’ve written about CGM on my gardening blog here.

Diamond Naturals Active Cat With Chicken Meal & Rice Review

New chicken goodies from Tractor Supply

Diamond is a staple of the pet food industry, which makes its inclusion at Tractor Supply stores unsurprising. They are best known for being a cost-effective brand that often sells their formulas in large volumes, such as 40lb bags for dog food.

However, just because they sell their recipes in bulk doesnt mean that Diamond utilizes low-quality ingredients and poor nutrition like some other bulk brands do.

You can learn more about Diamonds ingredient choices and its background in our Diamond Brand Review.

Active Cat is one of our favorite cat food recipes from Diamond, thanks to its impressive nutritional profile. The recipe includes a minimum of 40% protein and 20% fat which is far more than many premium brands recipes.

This impressive nutrition is thanks to a large portion of Chicken Meal and Chicken Fat. Many pet owners are afraid of meat meals like Chicken Meal, but they shouldnt be. They are extremely dense sources of nutrition as they have already had their moisture removed.

Outside of these Chicken ingredients, Diamond utilizes a large portion of White Rice as its core plant-based ingredient. While many would prefer Brown Rice, this portion of White Rice is less crucial given the huge portion of Chicken present.
