Too Good To Be True Know Your Buzz Words

Some products like to whisper sweet nothings that sound healthier than they are. Watch out for these:

  • Fiber enriched: Breads labeled fiber enriched still carry a lot of carbs, so youll want to enjoy these in moderation.
  • All-natural: Like using a filter on your profile piece, this label is misleading. The FDA doesnt regulate the use of this term, and it can refer to food containing artificial flavors, synthetic substances, and even added color.
  • Multigrain: Many people assume this refers to whole grains, but it simply means the product includes multiple grains not necessarily whole grains.
  • Sugar-free: This only means the product doesnt contain cane sugar. It could contain other natural sweeteners like honey, agave, or artificial sweeteners that can still spike your blood sugar.
  • Grain-free vs. gluten-free. Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grains. Gluten-free products often contain rice flour and sugar both of which will take your blood sugar to spike town. The term grain-free denotes a product with zero grains which should, by default, also be gluten-free. These tend to be lower in carbs and are better for blood sugar control.

Dave And Busters History

Dave and Busters, also known as D& B, is a restaurant chain based in Dallas, Texas. Statistics show that as of July 2016, they had approximately 83 locations spread across America, and one in Canada as well.

The restaurants story began back in the 1970s when one of its co-founders, Buster, opened a restaurant that came to be known for serving tasty dishes and offering friendly service. A few years later, his friend Dave opened an entertainment spot where adults could come to play games and have fun. The two budding entrepreneurs realized people were moving back and forth between their establishments so they came up with an idea of merging them into one so as to serve all of their customers under one roof.

They did a coin toss and Daves name came first after the throw, henceforth his name was to appear first in the company brand of Dave & Busters. The first D& B restaurant was opened in December 1982 and since then they have grown to include more than 80 locations across the country.

Today, a lot has changed about the restaurant and there are new games being introduced to their locations regularly. There are also fresh menu items and innovative drink options for the taking, including strawberry-flavored ice cube drinks. Additionally, with the addition of D& B Sports, guests can watch their favorite sport and play the games that are available.

Is Wheat Grass Juice Okay

If you wished to consume wheatgrass juice, on the other hand, you could sprout the wheat grain and then cut off the grass as it grew.

The research Ive seen states that there is no protein component formed until after the grass is older than 10-14 days.

So as long as you know how old the grass is you could consume it with no gluten contamination. Sprouted bread however is utilizing the whole grain plus the sprout and thats why they contain gluten.

How Can You Pick A Healthy Bread

What dietitians use to determine whether a loaf of bread is healthy or not comes down to a list of do’s and don’ts.

  • quality ingredients: It’s not just the quantity of ingredients that matters to Modell it’s also the quality. “Can you pronounce the ingredients? Can you recognize them? Ingredients ideally should be whole foods, such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, etc.”
  • fiber: “I also look to see how much fiber is in the bread. Whole grains are a great way to add additional fiber to your diet,” says Modell. “Bread that contains higher amounts of fiber is a win.”
  • low-sugar: “A ‘healthy’ bread should have no more than a couple of grams of added sugar per slice ,” Martin says.
  • made with sprouted grains: “I typically look for sprouted breads, since most sprouted bread fit these criteria. The DKB Thin-Sliced Sprouted Bread has 3 grams of added sugar, 3 grams of protein, and 2 grams of fiber, which is close enough,” says Martin.
  • whole grain: “Wheat flour” doesn’t cut it. “The word ‘whole’ has to be in front of ‘wheat’, or else it’s not a whole grain, and therefore has been stripped of fiber,” says Martin. “I try to stay away from non-whole grain ingredients, like ‘enriched’ or ‘bleached’ wheat flour.”

Ingredients In Dave’s Killer Bread

According to Modell, although there are a lot of ingredients, when you actually break down what the ingredients are, they overall are very good.

“For example, the first three ingredients listed are: water, organic whole wheat flour, and organic cracked whole wheat. Other ingredients include flax seeds, organic sunflower seeds, organic barley flakes, organic millet, organic spelt flakes, etc.,” says Modell. “DKB is also free of a lot of the preservatives often found in classic store-bought bread.”

One of the only ingredients that concerns the dietitians? Sugar.

“Sugars are often added to packaged breads to help it rise and improve the taste of the final product,” says Martin. “Although it’s hard to find packaged breads without added sugar, you can find ones with less than half the amount of this DKB variety.”

“Also, just because it says ‘organic’ cane sugar, doesn’t mean it’s any healthier. Organic sugar is still sugar, period.”

If you’re looking for a lower-sugar DKB option, your go-to should be their Powerseed loaf. It still has 5 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber, but only 1 gram of sugar.

The Killer Bread That Almost Lived Up To Its Name

July 14, 2012 by Jeanne

Today I was served some of Daves Killer Bread at a restaurant. As it turns out, the name of the bread is unfortunately close to the truth for me. The owner of the restaurant was so happy when she heard I was gluten intolerant because she said that she just started carrying gluten-free bread made by Daves. She said that she was told by the company that the bread was gluten-free. As it turns out, the bread she serves is the spelt bread. As you may know, spelt is an older form of wheat and it contains gluten. When I started having my reaction, the owner called Daves to double check that the bread was gluten-free. This time the guy at the company admitted that it contained gluten.

As you know, I have a life-threatening allergy to wheat in addition to a gluten-intolerance. I had to be rushed to the hospital to treat the anaphylaxis from the allergywhich can be fatal. This is not something to play round with. I was very lucky that it wasnt worse.

FYI: If you go to Daves site, they do not claim that their bread is gluten-free, but they do have some tricky line editing in the description of the bread that makes their spelt bread look like its gluten-free if you dont read it carefully. And a Google search comes up with the line, under Daves site, that says, Good Seed Ancient Grain is gluten-free.

ADDED:Heres a cut-and-paste of the bread description on their site:

PS: This happened in 2012. Im closing the comments to this post.

There Are Some Red Flags You Should Avoid When Buying Store

  • ingredient names: “If you cannot pronounce ingredients or recognize them, that is immediately a red flag,” says Modell. “Food companies often add preservatives and fillers to products, which may have a questionable impact on your health.”
  • number of ingredients: “For example, if one item has 20 ingredients, when it should really have two,” says Modell. “With the case of DKB, the ingredients are actually adding value, such as additional fiber and protein and they are coming from wholesome foods. However, this is not always the case, so definitely be on the lookout for food products with too many ingredients.”
  • bleached flour: The words “bleached” and “enriched” mean that the flour has been ultra-processed to remove its nutrient-rich outer layer and then manufacturers add back the nutrients it stripped. If you see “bleached” on the label, it means manufacturers use whitening agents to make the flour whiter.
