Here is where things get a little trickier.

If you have celiac disease, any gluten-free food sharing a fryer with gluten-containing food is not considered gluten-free or celiac-safe. So if gluten-free food shares a fryer with not gluten-free food, it is not safe for people with celiac.

However, the story might be different if you have non-celiac gluten-sensitivity. People with non-celiac gluten-sensitivity have a wide range of varying gluten-exposure tolerance levels.

So some people with non-celiac gluten-sensitivity might be fine with french fries sharing a fryer and some may not.

It really just depends. Check out my post on the difference between celiac disease and gluten intolerance to learn more.

    Are French Fries Gluten

Potatoes are a gluten-free food, but don’t assume the same rule applies to french fries. If you’re wondering whether a side of fries is gluten-free, you’re going to need a little more information about how those fries were prepared, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation.

While recipes for fries don’t usually contain gluten, french fries may be cooked in the same fryer or using the same oil as gluten-containing foods like breaded chicken tenders. French fries are among the most easily cross-contaminated food in restaurants, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. And for people with celiac disease or who are severely sensitive, exposure to even trace amounts of gluten can be risky, causing symptoms like digestive problems or abdominal pain, according to Lisa Moskovitz, RD.

Most store-bought, frozen french fries can’t guarantee they are gluten-free or promise no cross-contamination, either. A majority of frozen fry brands are not certified gluten-free and may manufacture their fries alongside gluten-containing ingredients.

If you’re avoiding gluten, it’s safest to stay away from pre-made french fries, especially in restaurants that also serve breaded or battered foods. The good news: Fries are an easy DIY food you can bake at home to enjoy 100 percent safely.

Why Mcdonalds Fries Taste So Good

    “Healthy” French Fries (Gluten Free)

To mimic the chains original oil blend, which was mostly beef tallow, the oil is laced with chemical flavoring to replicate that mouthwatering smell. In other words, the delicious scent we know and love is actually the smell of potatoes cooked in beef fat, an aroma so powerful it makes the fries seem even tastier!

    Are French Fries Gluten Free

A few questions that I frequently receive while presenting at conferences are if French fries are gluten free and how to ensure that there is no cross contact with other foods that contain gluten and other allergens.

I’d like to share with you some ideas and questions that you can ask restaurant staff while ordering your meals. These will help to ensure that your French fries are gluten free and that no cross contact mistakes are made.

From a French fry standpoint, potatoes are naturally gluten free. That being said, food preparation techniques in restaurants and fast food chains can impact if the French fries remain gluten free.

Cross-contact occurs in two primary instances. First, when menu items such as French fries are prepared in the same frying oil as other foods containing common allergens. And second, when microbes or food particles are transferred from one food to another by using the same knife, cutting board, pots, pans or other utensils without washing the surfaces or tools in between uses.

To avoid cross-contact, the restaurant should use a dedicated fryer for French fries to be gluten free. Ensuring a dedicated fryer is extremely important for those with gluten, wheat, dairy, fish and shellfish allergies so no cross contact from fried foods such as cheese sticks, breaded calamari and battered fish occurs.

Sample questions for safe gluten free French fries are:

  • “Do you use any packaged seasonings on your fries which contain gluten?”

  • Pf Chang’s China Bistro

P.F. Chang’s is another favorite fast casual go-to restaurant for those who eat gluten-free, and many gluten-free diners have had good success ordering off the chain’s dedicated gluten-free menu.

The choices include a wide variety of appetizers, gluten-free egg drop soup, a noodle dish, plenty of entree options and even vegetarian options. You even can order a great dessert, P.F. Chang’s excellent GF flourless chocolate dome.

    Gluten-free options at P.F. Chang’s include:

    • Chang’s chicken lettuce wraps
    • Pad Thai
    • Chocolate souffle

All of P.F. Chang’s gluten-free dishes are served on a special plate with the chain’s logo so that you know you’re getting a safe meal. The restaurant also uses gluten-free soy sauce in its GF creations.

When asked if I eat out from restaurants now that I have celiac disease, I answer Yes, but only with the proper planning and in the right places. AND I have lots of advice on how to do so intelligently and safely:

Before you were diagnosed with celiac disease, running out to grab a quick bite to eat where someone else had to do the cooking and cleaning up was a luxury you may not have fully appreciated. Now that you have some idea of the hazards of eating gluten, you may feel too frightened to leave the confines of your own gluten-free kitchen.

A study of Canadians living with celiac disease reported that more than half of the families with celiac members reported that they avoided restaurants all or most of the time, despite the fact that four out of five people generally report that going out to eat at a restaurant is a better way to use their leisure time than cooking and cleaning up!

Living gluten free is not about living in a bubble though, so I urge you to put your fears on the shelf of your gluten-free flour cupboard and close the door!

Since most celiacs surveyed have indicated that their quality of life would be improved if there were more gluten-free choices at restaurants, it is imperative that you learn how to successfully navigate the restaurant world as a celiac wanting to live a better life.

Before you run back out to McDonalds, though, a few important pointers are useful:

What Common Fast Food Items Contain Gluten

When dealing with gluten-intolerance, knowledge is safety. Knowing what food items you can eat, as well as those that are taboo, can be the difference between a good afternoon with friends and a painful allergy episode.

While the list of food items containing gluten is inexhaustible, some are more common in fast food circles.

The following food items should be avoided by gluten-intolerant people at fast food outlets: wheat, barley, rye, malt, triticale, wheat starch, and brewers yeast. You should also try to avoid foods that require frying.

Fried foods at fast food restaurants may be gluten-free but are at risk of cross-contamination due to the same oil being used for frying both gluten-free and gluten-containing products.

Can You Trust Them Are They Actually Gf

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. If youre on a gluten-free diet, youll need to avoid any products that contain this protein. Wheat products like breads and pastas may be the first to come to mind, but gluten can sometimes pop up in other packaged foods too.

When eating out, it can be difficult to eat gluten-free since sandwiches come on buns and salads often include breaded chicken and croutons. Even if you order your meal without these gluten-containing foods, cross contamination can happen in the kitchen.

As you would at any other restaurant, be mindful of the possibility of cross contamination at fast-food joints. The biggest culprit is frying oil.

Oil is naturally gluten-free, but restaurants may use the same batch of oil to fry a bunch of different foods. Once that oil has been used to fry gluten-containing foods , its def contaminated and so are the french fries or any other foods that take a dip in the oil afterward.

Even with GF labels, the risk could still be high since the food prep is fast. If you have an allergy, dont be afraid to ask specifically how your food is cooked and mention that it must be gluten-free.

Telling the staff might help limit cross contamination that can happen if folks touch gluten-containing foods while prepping your meal.
