Gluten Free Cheese Puffs Po De Queijo

Gluten Free Sausage Balls with Cream Cheese | Easy Appetizer Recipe

Posted on Last updated:

Pão de Queijo are a favorite snack in Brazil. These cheesy pastries are small bites of cheese bread that are eaten all day long.

They are loved for a reason. Unlike the cheese puffs that you are acquainted with, these have a stretchy texture and are gluten-free. This is due to the flour used to make them.

Yucca, cassava or manioc flour is a staple in Brazil. You can find it at any meal of the day. It is prepared in numerous ways from a crunchy dish with bananas to a garlic spiked side dish with dinner.

Pão de Queijo is typically made with whatever cheese is available usually mozzarella, parmesan, or Minas cheese. We use parmesan in our recipe because we think the hard cheese packs more flavor.

No Special Equipment Needed

Popovers really do require a special popover pan. To puff up big and proud, they need to be in a muffin-like pan that has deep wells that are far apart from one another. That allows the hot air of the oven to circulate all around each well, giving it a boost right away.

Gougères do not require a special pan. They don’t even really require a pastry piping bag, since a disposable zip-top bag with the corner cut off will do just fine.

Since choux pastry doesn’t require a pan, you can make them any size you like. You can pipe them into tiny mounds as you see in the photos in this post, or you can pipe them larger as you see in the how-to video in this post.

This Brazilian Cheese Bread Is

  • Well EASY of course
  • Light, airy, fluffy and cheesy
  • Great for an after-school snack
  • Perfect appetizer for game day
  • Gluten Free& Vegetarian

What Are Cheese Balls Made Of

Contents

They all typically involve some combination of cream cheese, shredded cheese, and spices. Some recipes also call for adding in things like bacon, green onions, almonds, or other nuts. The cheeses and other ingredients are mixed together and then formed into a ball shape. The ball is then typically rolled in some sort of coating, like chopped nuts, cracker crumbs, or even cocoa powder. Cheese balls can be served plain, or with a dipping sauce on the side.

What Do You Need To Make Gluten Free Doughballs

Easy Classic Cheese Ball (Gluten Free)

That’s right, all you need to make my gluten free cheese doughballs is self-raising gluten free flour and yoghurt!

In fact, the exact quantities and ingredients you’ll need are:

  • 300g self-raising gluten free flour
  • 300g natural yoghurt

And if you want to make these extra special, you’ll also need:

  • 20g melted butter
  • ½ tsp garlic paste

Mix this together and it makes a dreamy dip for your warm-from-the-oven doughballs, or brush it on top of them for an extra flavour dimensions.

This genius combination has been doing the rounds on the internet for years, but most people use it to make flatbreads or naan breads .

It’s a combination that I’ve used for a long time, but today I stopped and thought – what if I used this to make gluten free cheesy doughballs?

And the results, I must say, are just INCREDIBLE.

What Is A Cheese Ball Made Of

What is a cheese ball made of? The main ingredients that make up the inside of a cheese ball are cream cheese and grated cheese. You can use many different types of cheese to make a cheese ball but sharp cheddar is most commonly used. Other ingredients like mustard, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder are often added to the grated cheese and cream cheese for extra flavor. The outer layer of a cheese ball is made of an array of different dry ingredients such as nuts, bread crumbs, and spices.

The inside of this jalapeño cheese ball is made with cream cheese, cheddar cheese, hot sauce, and mustard. Roasted jalapeños are diced and scattered throughout the cheese ball to give it a little bit of a bite. The outer layer of this jalapeño cheese ball is made of a mixture of crushed pecans, Mexican spices, and minced green onions.

Dips For Sausage Balls

I love to serve these easy sausage balls with my favorite dips. The raspberry chili and apricot chili dips are made with sweet chili sauce. They are slightly spicy but not too much.

  • Honey Mustard Dip: 2/3 cup mayo, 3 Tbsp Dijon mustard, 3 Tbsp honey, ½ tsp garlic powder, salt, and pepper
  • Raspberry Chili Dip : 1/2 cup raspberry jam & 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce
  • : 1/2 cup apricot jam & 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce
  • Dont use pre-shredded cheese, shred your own for best results.
  • If your mixture seems dry, add a bit of milk to moisten
  • You can mix the sausage quickly using a hand mixer, or by hand. All of the ingredients should be well combined.
  • Use a scoop to make preparation easy.

The Birth Of Fried Mac And Cheese Balls

It all began with a trip to Trader Joes.

We all know that a trip to Trader Joes is basically an adventure in grocery shopping. For someone with grocery shopping ADHD its paradise. Almost as good as Homegoods.

I was making a slow run through Trader Joes and I noticed, prominently displayed in the freezer section, Fried Mac and Cheese Bites. I was intrigued. It was obvious that they werent certified Kosher, but for a culinary MacGyver it was a challenge too good to pass up.

Thank you Trader Joes Fried Mac and Cheese bites for the inspiration!

How Do You Cook Frozen Cheese Balls In An Air Fryer And For How Long

First place a piece of parchment paper on the bottom of your air fryer. This is so that the bread crumbs dont fall to the bottom, and you can remove the balls immediately after cooking them so they dont melt sitting in the hot basket.

To avoid the cheese from completely melting and oozing out of the coating when cooking, you want to cook the goat cheese balls at a high temperature for only about 6-8 minutes in the air fryer.

This way you have the crispy coating on the outside with the perfectly creamy cheese on the inside!

What Are Brazilian Cheese Puffs

Brazilian cheese puffs , also known as Pao de Queijo, are a simple Brazilian cheese bread.

They are quite similar to American popovers except they are made with tapioca flour in lieu of regular all purpose flour.

for a relatively good price. If you cant find tapioca flour, check your local grocer for Arrowroot Flour as that is quite similar.

I wouldnt recommend using Coconut Flour or Almond Flour as that will change the texture completely..

This didnt stop me, however, from creating yet ANOTHER cheesy sauce for these vegan baked mac and cheese balls. This may be one of my favorite yet, and it was even approved by my picky little middle.

How Are They Different From Popovers Then

The difference in the end result between popovers and choux pastry is in the balance of ingredients. Popovers, when raw, are more of a batter than a dough, as it’s a bit thinner and choux pastry is a richer dough.

There’s about twice as much butter in choux pastry as in popovers, and the choux pastry dough is cooked on the stovetop before the eggs are added in a food processor or blender and processed until smooth.

Can I Make Your Gluten

This recipe can easily be made vegetarian by using more cheddar or mozzarella instead of parmesan.

Unfortunately I havent been able to make this vegan as it relies on two dairy products in considerable quantity and two eggs thats a bit too much to simply swap out and Id imagine the other measurements would need to be considerably tweaked to compensate!

Can You Deep Fry Or Bake

Gluten Free Cheese Balls Recipe with YesYouCan Savoury Snack Mix [How to Bake]

Yes. To make baked goat cheese balls, place the bites on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for about 8 minutes at 425°F. Be sure to move them to a cooling rack immediately after cooking so they dont melt on the hot sheet.

I prefer to say no to the deep fryer or frying in general since it adds a lot of extra fat, but you can if you want it. Heat about 2 high oil in a skillet to 375°F and fry each side for about 2 minutes.

Baking Tips For Brazilian Cheese Puffs

You can whip them up rather quickly in the blender or, in your mixer.

If you opt to use the mixer, I would suggest adding the liquids first, and the tapioca last otherwise the tapioca will gum up to the blades and be impossible to mix.

The batter will be very liquid. Pour into your greased mini muffin pan and bake for 15 minutes or until a light golden brown.

The finished Brazilian Cheese Puffs will be chewy ~ serve them with a little butter and gobble them right up
