How To Go Gluten Free Or Dairy Free With A Picky Eater: 2 Approaches
There are two ways to go about getting your picky eater onto a gluten free and/or dairy free diet. The first approach is removing all gluten and/or dairy cold turkey. The second approach is to ease into the removal, which is easier for most families. Although sometimes, thats not an option.
If youre child is old enough to understand these dietary changes, talk to them about it first. If you have a diagnosis, have them be part of the conversation with the doctor, theyll be able to understand better if it isnt just coming from you.
If it is something youre trying on your own, youll want to share with them why. For example, my son has severe constipation after eating dairy. He loves pizza in particular, but he understands that the pain and discomfort is caused by that cheese and so he can tolerate the removal of pizza from his diet.

A friend of ours wh cannot eat gluten, eggs or soy took a trip recently to Italy. She carried a card in Italian stating specifically what she could not eat. She reports that the food was delightful and that she had no problems finding delicious food that met her dietary restrictions.
Menus have first courses, second courses, side dishes. I found there were a variety of dishes without dairy when choosing from the second course selection. For example, one meal I had lamb with olive oil and fresh herbs. Many side dishes are vegetables in season prepared simply. Some restaurants had gluten free pasta choices.

Lactose is broken down by an enzyme called lactase, which is found in the lining of the gut.

Once you are following a gluten free diet, the gut is able to heal and you will be able to digest lactose again. Therefore, lactose intolerance is usually temporary. Following a gluten free diet means that most people with coeliac disease do not develop lactose intolerance.

Tips To Make Going Gluten Free With A Picky Eater As Painless As Possible
Going gluten free-dairy free is a REALLY big change for some kids. To help with this transition, there are a few other strategies that could help:
- Eat what they eat You can still eat gluten and dairy if you want when they arent looking, but doing this diet with them will help a lot, at least in the beginning.
- Dont have gluten or dairy based foods around if you can help it if you have other kids in the house, this may not be impossible. If thats the case, try to be aware of the additional tension this could create and plan meals where everyone eats the same food.
- Encourage trying foods over and over again Explain that it takes time to get used to new foods and that trying helps us do that. This can turn into pressure, so be careful. Focus on compassionately educating! Tell your child that it takes up to 15 times of trying a food before they get used to it.
- Use Dips A lot of dips like ketchup, peanut butter, and honey mustard are GF-DF, if your child likes one, serve it with their new foods. Its a great tool because they taste something familiar with the dip. Learn more about using dips for picky eaters.
- Cook together When youre making GF-DF substitutes of their favorite foods, try to get your kid involved in the kitchen! When they can touch and see the ingredients, theyll be so much more likely to try the food!

Attempt To Stick With Whole Foods As Much As Possible And Use This As An Opportunity To Eat More Veggies And Whole Grains
I know of plenty of folks who go gluten-free and dairy-free and wind up eating even more junk than they used to. Relying on packaged products with the gluten-free or dairy-free labels wont necessarily help you get healthier or help to heal your gut.
Use this change in your diet as a chance to start incorporating even healthier foods into your daily diet like whole grains, fresh veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds, and lean meats. Yes, theres a learning curve. Yes, you can give yourself some leeway when youre just getting started.

Ive had to make many changes to my diet since Ive had children. My firstborn was and still is sensitive to gluten, so I was gluten free for several years. When my second son was born, he had issues with reflux, and that coupled with his laryngomalacia made me change my diet once again. I eliminated dairy, egg, soy, and corn in addition to gluten.

A:Alisa ~ First, take a deep breath, and relax. Its going to be okay. During the first month of your transition, it may feel at times like there is nothing left to eat. But be patient and diligent. Soon the diet becomes second nature and you begin to explore all of the wonderful foods you can eat.
This topic could easily warrant an entire book, or two, so Im just going to give some starter advice to help you in this transition:
1) Find some good resources
Here are ones I use myself, and highly recommend:
The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook This is a fantastic gluten-free cookbook that truly focuses on health. Though it isnt 100% dairy-free, most of the recipes are.
The Almond Flour Cookbook This is actually grain-free baking . What I like about this one for beginners, is that the recipes use very few ingredients, and the only specialty ingredient you will need is almond flour . I even make my own almond flour at home from raw almonds.
Cooking for Isaiah The author created these recipes for her family, but this isnt a boring meat and potatoes kind of cookbook. She offers many recipe twists and creative parings, without venturing too far from the norm.
