How To Plan For A Healthy Plant
One of the beauties of a plant-based diet is that it is based on whole plant foodsbeans, lentils, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices. These are all naturally gluten-free! However, whole grains are also one of the main food groups on that list of whole plant foods I recommend you eat at every meal. While there are a few gluten-containing whole grains there are plenty of gluten-free whole grains on the list, including buckwheat, brown rice, wild rice, sorghum, amaranth, millet, and quinoa. If you base your eating style on whole plant foods, its quite simple to eat a gluten-free plant-based diet all you do is swap out gluten-containing grains for gluten-free grains.
However, there are a few gluten-containing food products that are essential to a plant-based diet that you might have to watch out for . These include soy sauce, which can add so much umami flavor to plant-based dishes, though all you have to do is use gluten-free soy sauce. Tempeh can be made with gluten-containing grains, but you can find gluten-free varieties quite easily. Pasta and breads are often based on gluten-containing varieties, which can be easily swapped out for gluten-free types . In addition, recipes may call for flour for thickening or structure, but you can swap out corn starch for thickening, and a gluten-free flour blend for most recipes. One trick is to look for the gluten-free label on food products to assure that the product is gluten-free, and does not have risk of cross contamination.

Thickening Agents For Sauces And Fillings
Without gluten, it can be challenging to achieve the satisfying viscosity we all hope for in a gravy, sauce, or pie filling. Below are some suggestions for doing just that. Your gluten-free potatoes and gravy, apple pie, or even hearty veggie stew will be the envy of all.
Arrowroot: Made of dried and ground tubers, arrowroot is a fine snow-like flour with excellent thickening power. It can be used for sauces and gravies, but it can also lighten the crumb when using denser flours like almond. It also helps create pliability in recipes like gluten-free crepes or pancakes.
- Baked goods: Try 24 tablespoons to hold moisture, help bind, and yield a buttery, delicate crumb.
- Compotes and pies: Dust over fruit, toss, and bake the juices release during cooking and activate the thickening properties of the arrowroot.
- Sauce, gravy, or soup: Use like you would flour or cornstarch make a slurry by stirring together 1½ teaspoons arrowroot starch/flour with ¼ cup water until dissolved, and whisk it into warm sauces and soups. The warmth activates thickening properties, while cooling finishes it.
Starchy additions: Blend ½1 cup of these ingredients with 1 cup water and add to soups, stews, sauces, gravy, and stocks to add bulk and thicken:
- Cooked potatoes
- Cooked short-grain brown rice
- Gluten-free oats

Selling points Vegan, soy-free, non-G.M.O.
Price About $4.25 for two four-ounce patties.
Tasting notes This burger is sold only in flavors I chose Mediterranean as the most neutral. Tasters liked the familiar profile of what Melissa declared the burger for people who love falafel, made mostly from chickpeas and bulked out with mushrooms and gluten. The burger wasnt meaty, but had nutty, toasted grain notes that I liked from brown rice, and whiffs of spices like cumin and ginger. This burger is a longtime market leader, and Sweet Earth was recently acquired by Nestlé USAon the strength of it the company is now introducing a new plant-meat contender called the Awesome Burger.
Ingredients Garbanzo beans, mushroom, vital wheat gluten, green peas, kale, water, bulgur wheat, barley, bell peppers, carrot, quinoa, extra-virgin olive oil, red onion, celery, flax seed, cilantro, garlic, nutritional yeast, granulated garlic, sea salt, ginger, granulated onion, lime juice concentrate, cumin, canola oil, oregano.

How Do The New Plant
The new generation of veggie burgers aims to replace the beefy original with fake meat or fresher vegetables. To find out how well they do, we ran a blind tasting of six top contenders.

In just two years, food technology has moved consumers from browsing for wan veggie patties in the frozen aisle to selecting fresh plant-based burgers sold next to the ground beef.
Behind the scenes at the supermarket, giant battles are being waged: Meat producers are suing to have the words meat and burger restricted to their own products. Makers of meat alternatives like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods are vying to capture the global fast-food market, as big players like Tyson and Perdue join the fray. Environmental and food scientists are insisting that we eat more plants and less processed food. Many vegetarians and vegans say the goal is to break the habit of eating meat, not feed it with surrogates.
I would still prefer to eat something thats not lab-grown, said Isa Chandra Moskowitz, the chef at the vegan restaurant Modern Love in Omaha, where her own burger is the most popular dish on the menu. But its better for people and for the planet to eat one of those burgers instead of meat every day, if thats what they are going to do anyway.
But how do all the newcomers perform at the table?

Include Plenty Of Fruits
Fruits are the natural plant-based convenience food. I take them everywhere with me to ensure I will always have a healthy snack on hand.
Choose a variety of fresh and frozen fruit each shopping session and alternate these on a weekly basis. I tend to gravitate towards fresh produce that is in season to keep the cost to a minimum.
Try to grab at least one type of berry and one type of citrus fruit each time you shop. Some berry varieties include raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and elderberries. Different citrus options may include grapefruit, oranges, limes, and lemons.

Highlights On Wfpb Grocery Lists
- Getting started on a whole-foods plant-based diet will necessitate a long grocery list full of exotic items. As you become more familiar with this lifestyle, the number of items on the list will significantly decrease. But first, it is critical to fill your home with nourishing plant-based staples, such as rice, beans, potatoes, and lentils.
- It is important to incorporate foods from each of the plant-based categories into your weekly grocery lists. These include legumes, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
- Plan your shopping around meals that consist mainly of starches and green/vegetables.
- There are very few sections of the grocery store you will be frequenting. These include the produce, dried goods, frozen foods, and condiment/spice aisles. Very rarely will you need to gather items from the health food aisle. As most of these foods are highly processed and provide little nutrition.
- You may need to locate your items across several grocery store locations or occasionally purchase some rare items online.
- The more you practice plant-based eating, the easier all this information will seem. Stick with it! This is the future of dietary recommendations.
Amys Organic Sonoma Veggie Burger
Amys offers a variety of vegan products, including meals and some meat alternatives. However, youll need to choose carefully if you want a gluten free product.
Their Sonoma Veggie Burger is one of the best choices. It relies on quinoa, walnuts, beans, mushrooms, oats, and potatoes as the main ingredients, along with other ingredients for flavor. Its completely free from gluten and soy, although the use of walnuts makes it a poor choice for anyone with a nut allergy.
The same company offers an Organic Summer Harvest Veggie Burger too. This one focuses more heavily on veggies, but it isnt being produced much currently, due to social distancing and COVID-19.
